When The Client Comes First, Bee Lian Ang Jan 2008

When The Client Comes First, Bee Lian Ang

Social Space

When donors, government and other funders provide support, they want assurances that the daily living conditions and lives of the beneficiaries are actually improved. The one question that is often asked is: What is the outcome of the help or service rendered? The science of determining outcomes, or outcome management, has its roots in social science evaluation research. Besides being used as a tool to evaluate the achievement of client outcomes, it is also a valuable management tool.

The Impact Of Demographic And Perceptual Variables On A Young Adult's Decision To Purchase Health Private Insurance, John Cantiello Jan 2008

The Impact Of Demographic And Perceptual Variables On A Young Adult's Decision To Purchase Health Private Insurance, John Cantiello

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Each year the number of uninsured individuals in the United States continues to grow. This unfortunate occurrence creates negative consequences for those who are uninsured, but also for those who are covered by health insurance plans. Through cost-shifting practices, hospitals and other healthcare organizations are increasing the cost of other healthcare services to help subsidize the care they must provide for those who cannot pay for that care. There have been attempts to solve this problem, but a successful solution has not been implemented. Rather than attempt to study the entire uninsured population, this study seeks to determine precisely why …

Health Transitions And The Aging Population: A Framework To Measure The Value Of Rapid Rehabilitation, Dianne Ross Jan 2008

Health Transitions And The Aging Population: A Framework To Measure The Value Of Rapid Rehabilitation, Dianne Ross

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Healthcare services for the aging population in the United States are a complex configuration of acute healthcare organizations, and post acute nursing facilities, home healthcare, and community based services. The system encompasses all services that imply the need for clinical, medical, or professional judgment (Baldrige National Quality Program, 2006). Most Americans believe the system exists to provide preventive services, management for chronic conditions, and health care services to meet the needs of the people (National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA), 2004). However, the healthcare delivery system is fragmented across a broad array of settings (Coleman, Smith, Frank, Min, Parry, & …

An Analytical Understanding Of Administrative Practices Minimizing Vicarious Traumatization In Domestic Violence Organizations I, Katharine Campbell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Working within the field of domestic violence can result in the occurrence of vicarious traumatization. The literature supports that collegial support and supervision are effective tools organizations can implement to assist in minimizing vicarious trauma. This study, guided by constructive self development theory and feminist theory, examines whether the level of vicarious trauma is impacted by knowledge base, collegial support, and supervision. Staff within certified shelters in the state of Florida were surveyed using a research designed instrument and the Trauma and Attachment Belief Scale. A total of 112 participants were recruited using the Tailor Design Method of surveying. Findings …

Healthcare Communication Networks: The Dissemination Of Employee Information For Hospital Security, Jennifer Sumner Jan 2008

Healthcare Communication Networks: The Dissemination Of Employee Information For Hospital Security, Jennifer Sumner

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Healthcare in the United States is a system that, organizationally speaking, is fragmented. Each hospital facility is independently operated and is responsible for the hiring of its own employees. However, corrupt individuals can take advantage of this fragmentation and move from hospital to hospital, gaining employment while hiding previous employment history. Traditionally, hospitals have been reluctant to share information on their previous employees, even with other hospitals, for fear of issues surrounding defamation, negligent hiring, and violation of the employee's privacy. However, growth in healthcare services is expected to rise exponentially in the near future, increasing the demand for employees. …

The Impact Of Policy On Student Success In Secondary Online Education: A Case Study Of Florida Virtual School, Rhonda Mcpherson Jan 2008

The Impact Of Policy On Student Success In Secondary Online Education: A Case Study Of Florida Virtual School, Rhonda Mcpherson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Florida Virtual School (FLVS) was established in 1997 as an online education alternative for the residents of Florida. The purpose of this study was to identify policy changes at the organizational, state, and federal levels that had the propensity to impact student success (as measured by student's final letter grade) at FLVS. In addition, this study identified which type of institutional isomporphic policy (coercive, mimetic, or normative) best classified major policy changes in the organization from 1997-2007. The use of institutional theory as the guiding framework for this study proved to be beneficial and enabled the researcher to conclude which …

What Is Leadership? (Chapter Two Of Leadership Alive: Changing Leadership Practices Within The Emerging 21st Century Culture), Christopher P. Meade

Faculty Publications - College of Business

Excerpt: "This newly emerging culture is upon us. This change in Western culture requires a new breed of leader to emerge. There are many usable definitions concerning leadership. Leadership may appear in many forms, come from many theories, and be derived from many sources, but all are likely to guide through actions, influence, or service. 80 The new emerging leader of the 21st century will understand the relationship between the four principle leadership models: (1) Servant Leadership, (2) Situational Leadership, (3) Leadership and the New Science, and ( 4) Christian Leadership.

In Chapter Three, I will introduce and explore the …

Critical Impairments To Globalizing The Western Human Rights Discourse, Nikitah O. Imani Jan 2008

Critical Impairments To Globalizing The Western Human Rights Discourse, Nikitah O. Imani

Black Studies Faculty Publications

This article focuses on the philosophical implications of Euro-centrism and Eurocentric discourse for the Western human rights narrative. It is argued that there is insufficient theoretical and practical consideration of those implications, particular for advocacy and activity in the so-called “Third World” where such arguments frequently become mere vehicles for the advance of economic and political neocolonialism. In many ways, colonialism with a humanistic, liberal democratic “face”. Finally, a proposition is advanced that if the Western human rights discourse is to be effectively corrected and evolve into a global one, critiques of Euro-centrism from outside the Western discursive world must …

Reflections On Lnter-Species Parasitism: A Rejoinder To Gibson, Howard, Mcdonald, Wellman, And Rea, Daniel L. Dustin, Keri A. Schwab

Recreation, Parks and Tourism Administration

We read the reactions to our "Kirrland's Warbl r" article with great interest, and we thank professors Gibson, Howard, McDonald, Wellman, and Rea for their thoughtful responses to it. We will continue employing the Kirtland's warbler analogy in this rejoinder and organize our comments under four sub-headings: I) Birds of a Feather? 2) Feathering our own Nests? 3) Species Invasion and Succession? and 4) Bluebird of Happiness? Our intent is not so much to insist that the respondents are wrong about this matter, burro encourage the reader to ponder the implications if it turns out they are.

SMU was envisioned as a bold experiment to redefine tertiary education in Singapore. Taking up the gauntlet to bring university education to a new threshold, it challenges itself to become a leading research university known for its innovative pedagogy that produces a different kind of graduate: all-rounded, talented individuals who can think creatively and divergently, filled with business world savvy and strong interpersonal skills yet rooted in social consciousness. The untested ideas of yesterday have become pages after pages of success stories which we continue to celebrate every Commencement in August. Against the backdrop of not only the worst global …

Measuring Work Preferences: A Multidimensional Tool To Enhance Career Self Management, G. Ronald Gilbert, Ravipreet S. Sohi, Adriana G. Mceachern

Department of Marketing: Faculty Publications

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to introduce a multidimensional work preference research instrument, and to relate scores on these dimensions with subjects' real world work choices.

Design/methodology/approach: Repeated samples of 1,002 and 975 adult subjects were used to identify 17 empirically derived constructs, using both EFA and CFA statistical applications. The CFA revealed measurement invariance among the predicted and measured constructs. The 17 validated constructs were culled from career development-related psychology that has variously been identified with learning styles, work interests, work values, and temperament. Using a third sample of 590 subjects, MANOVA analyses of work preference scores …

School of Architecture Articles and Papers

Background: Research on neighborhood effects increasingly includes the influences of the built environment on health and social well-being.

Objectives: In this population-based study in a low-socioeconomic-status (SES), Hispanic neighborhood, we examined whether architectural features of the built environment theorized to promote direct observations and interactions (e.g., porches, stoops) predicted Hispanic elders’ social support and psychological and physical functioning.

Methods: We coded built-environment features for all 3,857 lots in the 403-block area of an urban Miami, Florida, community. We then conducted three annual assessments of social support, psychological distress, and physical functioning in a population-based sample of 273 low-SES Hispanic elders …

Drinkers And Bettors: Investigating The Complementarity Of Alcohol Consumption And Problem Gambling, Michael T. French, Johanna C. Maclean, Susan L. Ettner

Sociology Faculty Articles and Papers

Regulated gambling is a multi-billion dollar industry in the United States with greater than 100% increases in revenue over the past decade. Along with this rise in gambling popularity and gaming options comes an increased risk of addiction and the associated social costs. This paper focuses on the effect of alcohol use on gambling-related problems. Variables correlated with both alcohol use and gambling may be difficult to observe, and the inability to include these items in empirical models may bias coefficient estimates. After addressing the endogeneity of alcohol use when appropriate, we find strong evidence that problematic gambling and alcohol …

Economic Evaluation Of Continuing Care Interventions In The Treatment Of Substance Abuse, Michael T. French, Ioana Popovici, James R. Mckay Jan 2008

Economic Evaluation Of Continuing Care Interventions In The Treatment Of Substance Abuse, Michael T. French, Ioana Popovici, James R. Mckay

Sociology Faculty Articles and Papers

The chronic and relapsing nature of substance abuse points to the need for continuing care after a primary phase of treatment. This article reviews the economic studies of continuing care, discusses research gaps, highlights some of the challenges of conducting rigorous economic evaluations of continuing care, and offers research guidelines and recommendations for future economic studies in this emerging field. Rigorous economic evaluations are needed by health care providers and policy makers to justify the allocation of scarce resources to continuing care interventions. The adoption of cost-effective continuing care services can reduce long-term consequences of addiction, thereby potentially increasing overall …
