Cultural Icons And Marketing Of Gambling, L. Dyall, S. Tse, A. Kingi Jan 2008

Cultural Icons And Marketing Of Gambling, L. Dyall, S. Tse, A. Kingi

Aboriginal Policy Research Consortium International (APRCi)

A number of different countries and states have or are in the process of developing formal or informal guidelines to govern gambling advertising and marketing of gambling. There is a growing consensus that gambling advertising should not mislead the public, be fair, provide information on the odds of wining and there should be provisions in place to protect vulnerable groups, such as, children. In the development of these guidelines by different countries or states there has been no real consideration of the need to engage with different indigenous and ethnic populations to ensure that they are protected as vulnerable populations. …

Net Energy Of Cellulosic Ethanol From Switchgrass, Marty R. Schmer, Kenneth P. Vogel, Robert B. Mitchell, Richard K. Perrin Jan 2008

Net Energy Of Cellulosic Ethanol From Switchgrass, Marty R. Schmer, Kenneth P. Vogel, Robert B. Mitchell, Richard K. Perrin

Department of Agricultural Economics: Faculty Publications

Perennial herbaceous plants such as switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.) are being evaluated as cellulosic bioenergy crops. Two major concerns have been the net energy efficiency and economic feasibility of switchgrass and similar crops. All previous energy analyses have been based on data from research plots (<5m2) and estimated inputs. We managed switchgrass as a biomass energy crop in field trials of 3–9 ha (1 ha = 10,000m2) on marginal cropland on 10 farms across a wide precipitation and temperature gradient in the midcontinental U.S. to determine net energy and economic costs based on known farm …

Five Good Short Books On China: A Guide For Readers With Limited Attention Spans

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

This list is for an imaginary couple who are about to take their first trip to China and have made it clear to me that they only have a limited amount of time to spend reading up on the country in advance. Or, perhaps better yet, they’ve been honest enough to tell me that they won’t start to read up on China until their plane actually takes off, and they want some ideas of what to cram into the limited space of their carry-on bags. Though busy, these imaginary friends (I do have real ones, but none that have asked …

Review And Analysis Of International And Budgetary Considerations For The 2007 U.S. Farm Bill, Bashir Qasmi, Evert Van Der Sluis Jan 2008

Review And Analysis Of International And Budgetary Considerations For The 2007 U.S. Farm Bill, Bashir Qasmi, Evert Van Der Sluis

Economics Staff Paper Series (1969 - 2017)

We assess the extent to which national budget considerations, international trade negotiations, and domestic political deliberations affect the potential development of an omnibus farm bill, which may be signed into law in 2008. With no successful conclusion of the Doha Development Round of trade negotiations in sight, U.S. legislators appear unable to make politically unpopular decisions on domestic farm policy reform. However, the absence of an international trade agreement does not reduce the need for the U.S. to comply with previous agreements.

The Efficacy Of The Grid Marketing Channel For Fed Cattle, Scott Fausti, Bashir Qasmi, Matthew Diersen Jan 2008

The Efficacy Of The Grid Marketing Channel For Fed Cattle, Scott Fausti, Bashir Qasmi, Matthew Diersen

Economics Staff Paper Series (1969 - 2017)

Beef industry data suggest that beef carcass yield and quality grades have shown little improvement over the last six years. Empirical analysis, based on USDA public market reports, indicates that the share of steer slaughter volume marketed on a grid is less than industry estimates and the growth in grid market share of total steer slaughter is stagnate. Trend analysis of grid market share and carcass quality suggests that grid pricing has not made sufficient progress in achieving the goals envisioned for it as a value based marketing system. We conclude additional research on producer resistance to selling on a …

Taking It To Scale: Evaluating The Scope And Reach Of A Community-Wide Initiative On Early Childhood, Robert L. Fischer, Nina Lalich, Claudia J. Coulton Jan 2008

Taking It To Scale: Evaluating The Scope And Reach Of A Community-Wide Initiative On Early Childhood, Robert L. Fischer, Nina Lalich, Claudia J. Coulton

Faculty Scholarship

In implementing broad community initiatives, the ability to assess the delivery of services is a distinct challenge. Yet, understanding both the magnitude and cross-usage of services by target populations is often a precursor to effective program evaluation, program improvement and additional program planning. This research examines the extent to which a comprehensive early childhood initiative successfully reached young children and their families in a large urban county. By linking birth records and administrative datasets at the level of the individual child, the study tracks the experiences of children in respect to engagement in program services and their receipt of public …

On The China Beat

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

China has been looming ever larger in the global economy and the global imagination in recent years, and the international chatter about the country hit a crescendo last year with reports about things like lead paint, moon shots, an architectural face-lift in the capital in preparation for the 2008 Olympic Games, high growth rates, a rising middle class, and ever sharper divides between haves and have-nots. As China draws more attention from the Western media and its readership, the need for storytellers and interpreters of China has also grown. As China scholars and writers who are concerned about the way …

After The Avalanche Jan 2008

After The Avalanche

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

Most Taiwan observers expected a convincing KMT victory in last Saturday’s Legislative Yuan elections, perhaps even a landslide. What we got was an avalanche, with the KMT garnering 81 of 113 seats (71.68%), as opposed to a paltry 27 for the DPP. The scale of the rout was unprecedented, especially since the KMT ended up with just over 51% of the popular vote, as opposed to approximately 37% for the DPP, numbers that do not differ that dramatically from those of past elections.

A wide range of factors contributed to the DPP debacle, including profound concerns with the slow pace …

American Indian Treaties In The Courts Of Claims: A Guide To Treaty Citations From Opinions Of The United States Courts Of Claims, Charles D. Bernholz, Robert Weiner

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Faculty Publications

Since 1855, the federal Courts of Claims have provided relief for citizens in cases against the United States. President Abraham Lincoln, in his first annual message in 1861, declared his support for such a process: “It is as much the duty of government to render prompt justice against itself, in favor of citizens, as it is to administer the same between private individuals” [Message of the President. (1862). Appendix to The Congressional Globe, 37th Congress, 2d session, 3 December 1861, p. 2]. Among the Courts’ cases, 240 of 375 recognized American Indian treaties have been cited 992 times in …

Anniversaries: The Rise And Fall Of Wang Mang Jan 2008

Anniversaries: The Rise And Fall Of Wang Mang

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

We subscribe to an online encyclopedia to help one of my sons with homework, and because I placed the order, their “This Day in History” feature comes to my inbox. China rarely figures, which isn’t that surprising. After all, they need brief, punchy items that will catch readers’ attention, and that means items familiar enough to a general audience that a five word title is understandable, and that only three sentences are needed to remind us of what happened and why we should care. So I’m not crusading for “1644: Manchus enter Beijing with the help of Wu Sangui” to …

"Curious Survivals": The Letters Of Willa Cather, Andrew Jewell Jan 2008

"Curious Survivals": The Letters Of Willa Cather, Andrew Jewell

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Faculty Publications

Last winter, when hundreds of letters written by Willa Cather were donated to the University of Nebraska- Lincoln, the world got its first glimpse of a significant unread text of one of the United States' most accomplished authors. These letters, written over four decades to Cather's brother Roscoe and his family, are remarkable artifacts: meditations on the writing process, anxious descriptions of new ideas, celebrations of professional success, solicitations for financial advice, and gripes about family squabbles. They reveal details of complex and intense familial relationships that Cather's biographers have not understood before, and they provide new details about the …

Interview No. 1329, Cándido Alarcón Jan 2008

Interview No. 1329, Cándido Alarcón

Combined Interviews

Mr. Alarcón very briefly discusses his family and childhood; he learned about the bracero program through his friends; when he was roughly twenty-six years old, he decided to join the program in order to give his wife and daughter a better life; he explains that each town had a raffle to see who would travel to the contracting center in Empalme, Sonora, México, in order to enlist; from there he traveled to Calexico, California, where he was stripped naked and medically examined before being deloused; he describes the process as humiliating, because he was treated like an animal; moreover, he …

Interview No. 1330, José Natividad Alva Medina

Combined Interviews

Mr. Alva talks about his childhood, family, and father, who was abusive, which led him to seek a life outside of his home very early on; growing up, he worked picking cotton in various places throughout México, and this eventually led him to enlist in the bracero program; he details the process he went through to get the necessary paperwork for the contracting center in Empalme, Sonora, México; from there, he and the other men were loaded in cargo trains, about one hundred per box car, and transported to Calexico, California; he was treated so badly that he wanted to …

Interview No. 1333, Sara Arrieta Hernández Jan 2008

Interview No. 1333, Sara Arrieta Hernández

Combined Interviews

Sara’s father, Pedro Arrieta González, worked as a bracero; she vividly describes how poor she and her family were while she was growing up; there were times when they went days without eating, until her father was able to send them money from the United States; they were always happy to have him back home; prior to becoming a bracero, he made brooms; he repeatedly mentioned how fond he was of the United States, especially because it was so different; his first contract was in 1942, the year before Sara was born; she comments that virtually every time he returned …
