The Differential Impact Of Relational Health On Alcohol Consumption And Consequences In First Year College Women, Joseph W. Labrie, Alysha D. Thompson, Paul Ferraiolo, Jonathan A. Garcia, Karie Huchting, Kristin Shelesky Feb 2008

The Differential Impact Of Relational Health On Alcohol Consumption And Consequences In First Year College Women, Joseph W. Labrie, Alysha D. Thompson, Paul Ferraiolo, Jonathan A. Garcia, Karie Huchting, Kristin Shelesky

Heads Up!

The Relational Health Indices (RHI) is a relatively new measure that assesses the strength of relationships. It has been found that relational health has a protective factor for women, such that it enhances positive experiences and limits negative ones. The current study is the first to use the RHI to examine the effect of relational health on alcohol consumption and alcohol consequences. First year college women were given questionnaires assessing relational health, drinking motives, and alcohol use in their first few months at a mid-sized, private university. Due to the social nature of college settings, it was predicted that relational …

The Hedonistic Paradox: Is Homo Economicus Happier?, James Konow, Joseph Earley Feb 2008

The Hedonistic Paradox: Is Homo Economicus Happier?, James Konow, Joseph Earley

Economics Faculty Works

The “Hedonistic Paradox” states that homo economicus, or someone who seeks happiness for him- or herself, will not find it, but the person who helps others will. This study examines two questions in connection with happiness and generosity. First, do more generous people, as identified in dictator experiments, report on average greater happiness, or subjective well-being (SWB), as measured by responses to various questionnaires? Second, if the answer is affirmative, what is the causal relationship between generosity and happiness? We find a favorable correlation between generosity and happiness (i.e., SWB is directly related to several measures of happiness and …

Soil Modification By Invasive Plants: Effects On Native And Invasive Species Of Mixed-Grass Prairies, Nicholas R. Jordan, Diane L. Larson, Sheri C. Huerd Feb 2008

Soil Modification By Invasive Plants: Effects On Native And Invasive Species Of Mixed-Grass Prairies, Nicholas R. Jordan, Diane L. Larson, Sheri C. Huerd

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

Invasive plants are capable of modifying attributes of soil to facilitate further invasion by conspecifics and other invasive species. We assessed this capability in three important plant invaders of grasslands in the Great Plains region of North America: leafy spurge (Euphorbia esula), smooth brome (Bromus inermis) and crested wheatgrass (Agropyron cristatum). In a glasshouse, these three invasives or a group of native species were grown separately through three cycles of growth and soil conditioning in both steam-pasteurized and non-pasteurized soils, after which we assessed seedling growth in these soils. Two of the three invasive …

Federal Economic Development Funding In Ohio: Survey Findings, Afia Yamoah Feb 2008

Federal Economic Development Funding In Ohio: Survey Findings, Afia Yamoah

All Maxine Goodman Levin School of Urban Affairs Publications

The objective of the survey on federal funding for economic development was to assess some of the challenges facing county governments in the state of Ohio as they attempt to access federal funding for economic development purposes. Federal funding is important to local governments because it is a significant resource to communities that are able to secure such grants. Competition for federal grants is usually very strong due to limited funds and counties have to be well equipped if they are to be successful in receiving grants. Local governments should know about the availability of funds and should have access …

Predicting The Psychological Health Of Older Adults: Interaction Of Age-Based Rejection Sensitivity And Discriminative Facility, Debbie Sau-King Chow, Evelyn Wing-Mun Au, Chi-Yue Chiu Feb 2008

Predicting The Psychological Health Of Older Adults: Interaction Of Age-Based Rejection Sensitivity And Discriminative Facility, Debbie Sau-King Chow, Evelyn Wing-Mun Au, Chi-Yue Chiu

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

We hypothesize that older adults who anxiously expect, readily perceive, and intensely react to social rejection because of their old age (i.e., have high age-based rejection sensitivity) are vulnerable to depression and poor social functioning. We further hypothesize that the association between age-based rejection sensitivity and poor psychological health would be attenuated among older adults who possess adequate cognitive coping ability--they can discern and respond discriminatively to subtle variations in situational demands (i.e., have high discriminative facility). Based on the results of a focus group study, we constructed an age-based rejection sensitivity measure, which predicts greater depression, poorer social functioning, …

Expanding Horizons: Using Information In The 21st Century, Information Literacy Committee (Trinity University)

Information Literacy Documents

A Quality Enhancement Plan for Trinity University, 2008-2013

The development of information literacy—the ability to locate, gather, evaluate, and use information analytically and effectively—is the focus of Trinity University’s “Expanding Horizons” Quality Enhancement Plan. Trinity has always valued critical reading, analytical writing, and reasoned judgment as key components of a liberal arts education, and it supports a variety of opportunities for student research. However, the sheer volume of information and its rapidly changing forms challenge us to move beyond what we have traditionally done in and out of the classroom.

Expanding Horizons asks faculty to design a creative and systematic …

Openness And The Efficiency Of Fdi: A Panel Stochastic Production Frontier Study, Farrokh Nourzad Feb 2008

Openness And The Efficiency Of Fdi: A Panel Stochastic Production Frontier Study, Farrokh Nourzad

Economics Faculty Research and Publications

This paper uses a stochastic translog production frontier to estimate technical inefficiency indices whose conditional mean is specified as a function of FDI and its interaction with openness of the economy. The model is estimated using an annual panel of 46 countries for the years, 1981–2001. The results suggest that increased FDI increases potential output in both developed and developing countries with the effect being more profound in the former. It is also found that increased FDI reduces technical inefficiencies the more open is the economy but that this effect holds only for developed economies. Thus qualified support is found …
