Farm Lease Termination, J. David Aiken
Farm Lease Termination, J. David Aiken
Cornhusker Economics
Rising crop prices have led many landlords to seek renegotiation of lease terms, particularly cash rents. Most Nebraska leases are unwritten, which means that notice of termination must be given six months in advance, usually by August 31. If the landlord cannot terminate the lease, the landlord cannot require the tenant to renegotiate the lease in order to avoid lease termination. However, smart tenants would renegotiate the lease with the landlord in order to keep the lease longer. If a tenant refuses to renegotiate, the tenant could lose the lease after the current crop year.
Many farm leases, especially those …

On Sport and Society
I must admit that my head is still spinning. In the last few weeks one bizarre piece of news after another seems to be emanating from the bowels of Sportsworld, and no one with a plastic bag seems to be following along to clean up the unsightly nuggets left behind.

Proposal For Library Staff Exchange With Southwest Jiao Tong University, Courtright Memorial Library
Proposal For Library Staff Exchange With Southwest Jiao Tong University, Courtright Memorial Library
Otterbein China Librarians Exchange Program Documentations and Publications
In this memorandum to the Vice President for Academic Affairs, the library director Lois Szudy and System Librarian Jane Wu propose a trial library staff exchange between Otterbein College and Southwest Jiao Tong University in Chengdu, China. Building upon a prior successful exchange with Shanghai Jiao Tong University, this initiative seeks to deepen our global academic collaborations.
The benefits of such exchanges are manifold, encompassing cooperative teaching and research, student and faculty exchanges, summer internships, and enrichment of global learning programs. These collaborations significantly contribute to Otterbein's international reputation and capacity to attract international students.

In Case You Missed It: Vermeer’S Hat, David Porter
In Case You Missed It: Vermeer’S Hat, David Porter
China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012
Have you ever suspected that all this recent talk about China and globalization might be just a little belated? China historian Timothy Brook, author of the award-winning Confusions of Pleasure, reminds us in a new book that global commercial and cultural exchanges were already profoundly shaping the lives and world views of Europeans 350 years ago.
Vermeer’s Hat: The Seventeenth Century and the Dawn of the Global World (Bloomsbury, 2007) offers an eye-opening and eminently readable account of how the ever-expanding circulation of goods and people from several continents began flattening the world several centuries before NAFTA and Wal-mart.

The Deconstruction Of A Study: Toward More Effective Evaluation Of Research Studies In Cognitive Social Psychology, Jose A. Montelongo
The Deconstruction Of A Study: Toward More Effective Evaluation Of Research Studies In Cognitive Social Psychology, Jose A. Montelongo

Information literacy modules produced by academic libraries to facilitate the research process typically use the criteria of relevance, timeliness, reliability, coverage and accuracy to assess the various information resources undergraduate students use to write research reports. These same criteria are applied to the wide spectrum of research sources that may range from popular magazines to research journal articles.
In the field of Cognitive Social Psychology, many research questions necessitate the use of psycholinguistic stimuli (word lists, paired-associates, sentences, stories, etc.) as their treatments. This paper investigates the ability of information literacy modules based on the standards set forth by the …
The Reference Interview: Theories And Practice, Stephanie Willen Brown
The Reference Interview: Theories And Practice, Stephanie Willen Brown
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
The reference librarian's task is to translate the patron's question into one that can be answered with the library's resources. The first element of that task is to know what the patron wants; the second is to know what resources the library has and how to use them. Reference librarians must learn continuously throughout their careers, both because new resources become available, but also because patrons present questions requiring new resources. This article will focus on how to determine what kind of information the patron needs through the reference interview.
A Sentence Completion Task To Familiarize Students With Word Problem Structures, Jose A. Montelongo, Roberta Herter
A Sentence Completion Task To Familiarize Students With Word Problem Structures, Jose A. Montelongo, Roberta Herter
Library Scholarship
Marshall (1995) provided a classification scheme for arithmetic word problems. The most frequent types of word problems are the change, group, compare, restate, and vary situations. Change situations tell a story in which there is a change in a measurable quantity of a particular thing. Group word problems ask the solver to use combine members of the same classification before performing a mathematical calculation upon these. Compare situations require a student to complete mathematical calculations upon two or more things and to contrast their quantities for a conclusion. Restate word problems include both a relational statement between two or more …

China On My Mind: Ian Hacking On The 1989 Demonstrations
China On My Mind: Ian Hacking On The 1989 Demonstrations
China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012
In their coverage of the 1989 student demonstrations, foreign and domestic media focused almost exclusively on the demonstrations in Beijing. However, sympathetic students and workers protested and marched across China in May and June 1989, and there has been little coverage or scholarship written about the shape and scope of those events. In the spring and early summer of 1989, professor and philosopher Ian Hacking was teaching in Wuhan and Lanzhou. In this installation of the audio feature, “China on My Mind,” China Beat contributor Tom Mullaney chats with Hacking about what he saw during this critical moment in Chinese …
