Foundations Of Intrinsic Habit Formation, Kareen Rozen Mar 2008

Foundations Of Intrinsic Habit Formation, Kareen Rozen

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

We provide theoretical foundations for several common (nested) representations of intrinsic linear habit formation. These representations are dynamically consistent and additive, with geometrically decaying coefficients of habit formation. Our axiomatization introduces a revealed preference theory of weaning a decision-maker from her habits using the device of compensation. We characterize linear habit formation in terms of the ability to wean using uniquely determined compensating streams. Moreover, we distinguish between habits that are responsive to weaning and those that are persistent, develop a simple choice-theoretic measure of the rate of habit decay, and demonstrate how to recover the entire sequence of habit …

A ‘Dual’-Improved Shortcut To The Long Run, Kareen Rozen Mar 2008

A ‘Dual’-Improved Shortcut To The Long Run, Kareen Rozen

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

I use the theories of duality and optimal branchings to find a necessary and sufficient characterization of stochastically stable limit sets (SSLS) that helps improve the radius — modified coradius test of Ellison (2000). The improved shortcut I offer may permit the identification of SSLS when Ellison’s radius — modified coradius test fails to identify any, or may be able to pinpoint the true SSLS in cases where Ellison’s test identifies only a superset. I also demonstrate precisely why the radius — modified coradius test is not universally applicable and illuminate the connection between the modified coradius and the Lagrange …

Understanding Sectoral Labor Market Dynamics: An Equilibrium Analysis Of The Oil And Gas Field Services Industry, Patrick Kline Mar 2008

Understanding Sectoral Labor Market Dynamics: An Equilibrium Analysis Of The Oil And Gas Field Services Industry, Patrick Kline

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

This paper examines the response of employment and wages in the US oil and gas field services industry to changes in the price of crude petroleum using a time series of quarterly data spanning the period 1972-2002. I find that labor quickly reallocates across sectors in response to price shocks but that substantial wage premia are necessary to induce such reallocation. The timing of these premia is at odds with the predictions of standard models-wage premia emerge quite slowly, peaking only as labor adjustment ends and then slowly dissipating. After considering alternative explanations, I argue that a dynamic market clearing …

Derivatives Markets For Home Prices, Robert J. Shiller Mar 2008

Derivatives Markets For Home Prices, Robert J. Shiller

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

The establishment recently of risk management vehicles for home prices is described. The potential value of such vehicles, once they become established, is seen in consideration of the inefficiency of the market for single family homes. Institutional changes that might derive from the establishment of these new markets are described. An important reason for these beginnings of real estate derivative markets is the advance in home price index construction methods, notably the repeat sales method, that have appeared over the last twenty years. Psychological barriers to the full success of such markets are discussed.

The Therapeutic Camping Needs Of Children: The Hole-In-The-Hills At Wa-Shawtee, R. K. Piper, Ashley Kistner, Karen Rolf, Jerry Deichert, Russ Smith

Past Publications

This executive summary of the preliminary report documents the major findings, to date, of the first two components of a needs assessment being conducted for the Hole in the Hills at Wa-Shawtee (HITH). The purpose of the study is to determine if a new, medically-equipped and professionally-staffed therapeutic camp in the Great Plains region of the Midwest has the capacity to be a success. There are almost 3.5 million children between the ages of five and seventeen in the 6-state HITH region, 1 an unknown number of whom are seriously-ill and/or have special medical conditions and health care needs, who …

Redefining Quaker Simplicity: The Friends Committee On National Legislation Building, 2005, Carl Abbott, Margery Post Abbott Mar 2008

Redefining Quaker Simplicity: The Friends Committee On National Legislation Building, 2005, Carl Abbott, Margery Post Abbott

Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Publications and Presentations

In 2005, the Friends Committee on National Legislation, the major Quaker peace and justice lobbying organization in the United States, completed a substantial remodeling and expansion of its office building on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC. The building exemplifies a self-conscious effort to express Quaker values of simplicity and stewardship in architectural choices. Examining the changing meanings of simplicity as expressed in Quaker meeting houses, this article argues that contemporary Friends in the United States have given nontraditional meanings to the concept and now associate simplicity with environmental stewardship in personal and community life. For example, the use of natural …

The Illicit Arms Trade: A Social Network Analysis, David Todd Kinsella Mar 2008

The Illicit Arms Trade: A Social Network Analysis, David Todd Kinsella

Political Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

In recent years, researchers have increasingly turned their attention to the proliferation of small arms and light weapons. Small arms are difficult to track and are not the stuff of military parades, but they are immensely destructive. In addition to what is already circulating, a substantial percentage of what is newly produced enters the black market and is destined for conflict zones across the globe. I argue that the illicit trade in small arms shares some important properties with networked forms of organization studied by sociologists. I then employ quantitative methods developed for the study of social networks in an …

Conflict Leads To Cooperation In Nash Bargaining, Kareen Rozen Mar 2008

Conflict Leads To Cooperation In Nash Bargaining, Kareen Rozen

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

We consider a multilateral Nash demand game where short-sighted players come to the bargaining table with requests for both coalition partners and the potentially generated resource. We prove that group learning leads with probability one to complete cooperation and a strictly self-enforcing allocation (i.e., in the interior of the core). Highlighting group dynamics, we demonstrate that behaviors which appear destructive can themselves lead to beneficial and strictly self-enforcing cooperation.

Emerging Markets In An Anxious Global Economy, Ana Fostel, John Geanakoplos Mar 2008

Emerging Markets In An Anxious Global Economy, Ana Fostel, John Geanakoplos

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

We provide a theory of pricing for emerging asset classes, like emerging markets, that are not yet mature enough to be attractive to the general public. Our model provides an explanation for the volatile access of emerging economies to international financial markets and for several stylized facts we identify in the data during the 1990’s. We present a general equilibrium model with incomplete markets and endogenous collateral and an extension encompassing adverse selection. We show that contagion, flight to liquidity and issuance rationing can occur in equilibrium during what we call global anxious times.

Foundations Of Intrinsic Habit Formation, Kareen Rozen Mar 2008

Foundations Of Intrinsic Habit Formation, Kareen Rozen

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

We provide theoretical foundations for several common (nested) representations of intrinsic linear habit formation. Our axiomatization introduces an intertemporal theory of weaning a decision-maker from her habits using the device of compensation. We clarify differences across specifications of the model, provide measures of habit-forming tendencies, and suggest methods for axiomatizing time-nonseparable preferences.

Semiparametric Efficiency In Gmm Models Of Nonclassical Measurement Errors, Missing Data And Treatment Effects, Xiaohong Chen, Han Hong, Alessandro Tarozzi Mar 2008

Semiparametric Efficiency In Gmm Models Of Nonclassical Measurement Errors, Missing Data And Treatment Effects, Xiaohong Chen, Han Hong, Alessandro Tarozzi

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

We study semiparametric efficiency bounds and efficient estimation of parameters defined through general nonlinear, possibly non-smooth and over-identified moment restrictions, where the sampling information consists of a primary sample and an auxiliary sample. The variables of interest in the moment conditions are not directly observable in the primary data set, but the primary data set contains proxy variables which are correlated with the variables of interest. The auxiliary data set contains information about the conditional distribution of the variables of interest given the proxy variables. Identification is achieved by the assumption that this conditional distribution is the same in both …

Passive Tactile Feedback Facilitates Mental Rotation Of Handheld Objects, Maryjane Wraga, Monique Swaby, Catherine M. Flynn Mar 2008

Passive Tactile Feedback Facilitates Mental Rotation Of Handheld Objects, Maryjane Wraga, Monique Swaby, Catherine M. Flynn

Psychology: Faculty Publications

Mental rotation of objects improves when passive tactile information for the rotating object accompanies the imagined rotation (Wraga, Creem, & Proffitt, 2000). We examined this phenomenon further using a within-subjects paradigm involving handheld objects. In Experiment 1, participants imagined rotating an unseen object placed on their upturned palms. The participants were faster at mental rotation when the object was rotated on their palm than when the object remained stationary. Experiment 2 tested whether the performance advantage would endure when the participants received tactile information for only the start- and endpoints of the rotation event. This manipulation did not improve performance, …

The Lt. Governor Encourages Lawyers To Take Advantage Of State Resources To Aid Ohio's Economic Development, Lee Fisher

Law Faculty Articles and Essays

For the last several months, my colleagues and I at the Ohio Department of Development have been focused on the formation of a statewide economic development strategy that will establish our priorities and guide our future decisions. Ultimately this strategy will serve as an economic development plan for Ohio that will be led primarily by the Ohio Department of Development, along with the Governor's office and other state agencies and departments. With full implementation, our strategic plan will not only guide Ohio's long-term investments, but will also help guide our daily decisions.

The Interactive Effects Of Antisocial Personality Disorder And Court-Mandated Status On Substance Abuse Treatment Dropout, Stacey B. Daughters, Brooke A Stipelman, Marsha N. Sargeant, Randi Schuster, Marina Bornovalova, C W Lejuez Mar 2008

The Interactive Effects Of Antisocial Personality Disorder And Court-Mandated Status On Substance Abuse Treatment Dropout, Stacey B. Daughters, Brooke A Stipelman, Marsha N. Sargeant, Randi Schuster, Marina Bornovalova, C W Lejuez

Psychology Faculty Publications

The present study sought to examine the interactive effects of court-mandated (CM) treatment and antisocial personality disorder (ASPD) on treatment dropout among 236 inner-city male substance users receiving residential substance abuse treatment. Of the 236 participants, 39.4% (n = 93) met criteria for ASPD and 72.5% (n = 171) were mandated to treatment through a pretrial release-to-treatment program. Results indicated a significant interaction between ASPD and CM status, such that patients with ASPD who were voluntarily receiving treatment were significantly more likely to drop out of treatment than each of the other groups. Subsequent discrete time survival analyses …

Testing For Random Effects And Spatial Lag Dependence In Panel Data Models, Badi Baltagi, Long Liu Mar 2008

Testing For Random Effects And Spatial Lag Dependence In Panel Data Models, Badi Baltagi, Long Liu

Economics - All Scholarship

This paper derives a joint Lagrange Multiplier (LM) test which simultaneously tests for the absence of spatial lag dependence and random individual effects in a panel data regression model. It turns out that this LM statistic is the sum of two standard LM statistics. The first one tests for the absence of spatial lag dependence ignoring the random individual effects, and the second one tests for the absence of random individual effects ignoring the spatial lag dependence. This paper also derives two conditional LM tests. The first one tests for the absence of random individual effects without ignoring the possible …

Social Security Privatization: An Ideologically Structured Movement, Judie Svihula, Carroll L. Estes Mar 2008

Social Security Privatization: An Ideologically Structured Movement, Judie Svihula, Carroll L. Estes

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

We document the cumulative change in expressions of support for Social Security's social insurance ideals to privatization, from the late 1970s through 2007. Social Security's basic structure and principles generally were supported by the United States government and in amendments to the original Act of 1935. However, in the 1980s market arguments began to proliferate in government alongside pension privatization projects by international governmental organizations and conservative think tanks. Although in 1983 Commission members concluded "the Social Security system is sound in principle.. and... structure," four members wrote a supplemental statement that emphasized market rationalism. By 1994 dissension in Congress was …

The Illusion Of Change, The Politics Of Illusion: Evolution Of The Family Support Act Of 1988, Luisa S. Deprez Mar 2008

The Illusion Of Change, The Politics Of Illusion: Evolution Of The Family Support Act Of 1988, Luisa S. Deprez

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

The enactment of the Family Support Act was the outcome of a six-year legislative and administrative review of, and debate about, welfare policy and programs. Heralded as the opportunity of the century, it did little, however, to alter existing policy. This article examines the evolution of the Family Support Act within the United States Congress, spotlighting two important time periods leading up to its enactment: 1981 to 1985 and 1986 to 1988. Original documentsfroin the files of the late Senator Moynihan, legislative sponsor of the Family Support Act, as well as a comprehensive investigation of Congressional records of hearings and …

State Rural Development Policy: The Role Of The Community Development Block Grant Program, Robert Blair, Jerry Deichert, David J. Drozd

Publications

A partnership of the federal government and the states implement rural community development policy today, yet researchers rarely examine the nature and efficacy of this extensive intergovernmental collaboration. The authors collected data on Community Development Block Grant awards made by one state to small and rural communities for a variety of development projects over a period of more than ten years, and using a modified rural classification system detected patterns and trends in allocation. This study seeks to determine if a federally funded program assists states address the development needs of a diverse mix of rural communities. Do federal block …

The Virtues And Vices Of Equilibrium And The Future Of Financial Economics, J. Doyne Farmer, John Geanakoplos Mar 2008

The Virtues And Vices Of Equilibrium And The Future Of Financial Economics, J. Doyne Farmer, John Geanakoplos

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

The use of equilibrium models in economics springs from the desire for parsimonious models of economic phenomena that take human reasoning into account. This approach has been the cornerstone of modern economic theory. We explain why this is so, extolling the virtues of equilibrium theory; then we present a critique and describe why this approach is inherently limited, and why economics needs to move in new directions if it is to continue to make progress. We stress that this shouldn’t be a question of dogma, but should be resolved empirically. There are situations where equilibrium models provide useful predictions and …
