A Brief Decisional Balance Intervention Increases Motivation And Behavior Regarding Condom Use In High-Risk Heterosexual College Men, Joseph W. Labrie, Eric R. Pedersen, Alysha D. Thompson, Mitch Earleywine Apr 2008

A Brief Decisional Balance Intervention Increases Motivation And Behavior Regarding Condom Use In High-Risk Heterosexual College Men, Joseph W. Labrie, Eric R. Pedersen, Alysha D. Thompson, Mitch Earleywine

Heads Up!

Male college students constitute one of a number of at-risk populations susceptible to receiving and transferring sexually transmitted infections. Interventions designed to increase condom use have produced mixed results, but increasing motivation to use condoms may decrease risky sexual behavior. The current study examined the decisional balance, a component of Motivational Interviewing (MI), as an intervention to promote condom use. A total of 41 college men at-risk for negative outcomes from both unsafe sex and drinking participated. They reported both infrequent condom use and heavy drinking. Immediately following a decisional balance on condom use, three separate measures of motivation to …

Assessment Of Perceived And Actual Alcohol Norms In Varying Contexts: Exploring Social Impact Theory Among College Students, Eric R. Pedersen, Joseph W. Labrie, Andrew Lac Apr 2008

Assessment Of Perceived And Actual Alcohol Norms In Varying Contexts: Exploring Social Impact Theory Among College Students, Eric R. Pedersen, Joseph W. Labrie, Andrew Lac

Heads Up!

The social norms approach to college drinking suggests that students misperceive the drinking behavior and attitudes of their peers. While much is known about these misperceptions, research is sparse regarding the context in which perceived and actual norms are assessed. As social influence is pronounced in college, the principles of Social Impact Theory may contribute to differences between assessments performed individually and those completed when surrounded by members of one’s salient reference group. The current study examines 284 members of campus organizations in two contexts (online and group) to determine if individuals endorse different responses to questions of perceived and …

An Application Of The Theory Of Planned Behavior To Sorority Alcohol Consumption, Karen Huchting, Andrew Lac, Joseph W. Labrie Apr 2008

An Application Of The Theory Of Planned Behavior To Sorority Alcohol Consumption, Karen Huchting, Andrew Lac, Joseph W. Labrie

Heads Up!

Greek-affiliated college students have been found to drink more heavily and frequently than other students. With female student drinking on the rise over the past decade, sorority women may be at particular risk for heavy consumption patterns. The current study is the first to apply the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) to examine drinking patterns among a sorority-only sample. Two-hundred and forty-seven sorority members completed questionnaires measuring TPB variables of attitudes, norms, perceived behavioral control, and intentions, with drinking behaviors measured one month later. Latent structural equation modeling examined the pathways of the TPB model. Intentions to drink mediated the …

Palestinian Women's Roles After The First Intifada, 1987-1992, Bader Seetan Almadi Apr 2008

Palestinian Women's Roles After The First Intifada, 1987-1992, Bader Seetan Almadi

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation is a study of Palestinian women’s roles following the First Intifada, or Palestinian uprising, which began in 1987. This study considers whether Palestinian women found greater participation in their social life outside of the home during the challenges of the Intifada. In Palestinian society, traditional family roles and the various interpretations of Islamic teachings about to the family have severely restricted the role of women in society, and these limitations have served to increase the desire of these women for greater participation outside of the home.

This dissertation will focus on how religious forces, in addition …

Miniature Cattle: For Real, For Pets, For Production, Dana W. R. Boden Apr 2008

Miniature Cattle: For Real, For Pets, For Production, Dana W. R. Boden

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Faculty Publications

Recent years have seen more and more interest in small, hobby farms, as well as retirees moving to acreages. The growing group of small landowners and producers is driving a move supporting production of smaller cattle. Miniature cattle are perfect for these settings. These cattle are located in all fifty U.S. states, as well as around the world. This article addresses: reasons for the recent, growing interest in miniature cattle; how their miniature status is defined; the major players involved in the breeding, development and promotion of these cattle; the populations miniature cattle are most attractive to; the breeds being …

Give A Gift To Yourself: Take A Retreat, Carla Kimbrough Apr 2008

Give A Gift To Yourself: Take A Retreat, Carla Kimbrough

College of Journalism and Mass Communications: Faculty Publications

Getting away from it all is a valuable gift to yourself and to those around you. That's the premise I use when planning my annual women's retreat, where I hope women will reignite their emotional attachments to their dreams and goals.

I am sure that many retreat organizers consider questions similar to what I ask myself: Will the women who attend be glad they traveled to Estes Park for the retreat? Will the speakers touch the participants' lives in a meaningful way? Will the women be able to apply their new ideas and knowledge when they leave the mountaintop experience? …

Money Is Time: The Monetary Expression Of Value In Marx's Theory Of Value, David Kristjanson-Gural Apr 2008

Money Is Time: The Monetary Expression Of Value In Marx's Theory Of Value, David Kristjanson-Gural

Faculty Journal Articles

In this article, I derive the monetary expression of value based upon commodity money and use it to translate values and exchange values from units of labor into units of money. While this analysis has been done at the initial stage of Marx’s analysis where he assumes that commodities exchange in proportion to their values, I derive the monetary expression of value at the more developed stage of Marx’s 10 analysis where commodities exchange according to prices of production. I then develop a macroeconomic measure of the monetary expression of value and link the micro- and macroeconomic determination of the …

E-Government Implementation: A Macro Analysis Of Singapore's E-Government Initiatives, Calvin M.L. Chan, Yi Meng Lau, Shan L. Pan Apr 2008

E-Government Implementation: A Macro Analysis Of Singapore's E-Government Initiatives, Calvin M.L. Chan, Yi Meng Lau, Shan L. Pan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper offers a macro perspective of the various activities involved in the implementation of e-government through an interpretive analysis of the various e-government-related initiatives undertaken by the Singapore Government. The analysis lead to the identification of four main components in the implementation of e-government, namely (i) information content, (ii) ICT infrastructure, (iii) e-government infostructure, and (iv) e-government promotion. These four components were then conceptually integrated into the e-Government Implementation Framework. This paper suggests that this framework can either be used as a descriptive tool to organize and coordinate various e-government initiatives, or be used as a prescriptive structure to …

Multicultural Experience Enhances Creativity: The When And How, Angela K. Y. Leung, William W. Maddux, Adam D. Galinsky, Chi-Yue Chiu Apr 2008

Multicultural Experience Enhances Creativity: The When And How, Angela K. Y. Leung, William W. Maddux, Adam D. Galinsky, Chi-Yue Chiu

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Many practices aimed at cultivating multicultural competence in educational and organizational settings (e.g., exchange programs, diversity education in college, diversity management at work) assume that multicultural experience fosters creativity. In line with this assumption, the research reported in this article is the first to empirically demonstrate that exposure to multiple cultures in and of itself can enhance creativity. Overall, the authors found that extensiveness of multicultural experiences was positively related to both creative performance (insight learning, remote association, and idea generation) and creativity-supporting cognitive processes (retrieval of unconventional knowledge, recruitment of ideas from unfamiliar cultures for creative idea expansion). Furthermore, …

Fostering Democracy In Iraq, Tristam E. Niederer Apr 2008

Fostering Democracy In Iraq, Tristam E. Niederer

Masters Theses

This thesis evaluates democracy in Iraq and determines if the current institutions are fostering democracy. When the institutions in place are not fostering democracy, I evaluate why they are not and how they could promote democracy. I employ a case study approach of Iraq by first looking at the region's history. I then analyze the works of leading experts of democracy in divided society theory to develop a democratic framework for Iraq. Finally, I focus on the Iraqi government's institutions and the Iraqi Constitution to evaluate their effectiveness.

The purpose of this thesis is two-fold. First, as a deeply divided …

Generalization Of Mands For Information Across Establishing Operations, Sarah A. Lechago Apr 2008

Generalization Of Mands For Information Across Establishing Operations, Sarah A. Lechago

Masters Theses

This study sought to extend the developing literature on teaching mands for information by systematically assessing whether they generalize across different EOs. Three children with autism were taught to perform multiple behavior chains, three of which included a common response topography (e.g., "Where is the spoon?") used for different purposes. An interrupted-behavior-chain procedure was used to contrive the EO for each mand. After a mand for information was taught under one EO, the remaining chains were interrupted to determine whether the mand had generalized across EOs. For all three participants, mands for information generalized across EOs. For one participants, a …
