The Anti-Speculation Doctrine And Its Implications For Collaborative Water Management, Sandi Zellmer Apr 2008

The Anti-Speculation Doctrine And Its Implications For Collaborative Water Management, Sandi Zellmer

Nebraska College of Law: Faculty Publications

From Texas tycoon T. Boone Pickens to former corporate conglomerate Enron, grandiose schemes to profit from large-scale, transbasin water transfers have proliferated in the past decade. Reactions range from outrage at the commoditization of this precious resource to support for letting the market and its pricing signals move water to the most efficient use. The long-standing prohibition against speculation in water is an impediment to commoditization and, consequently, water marketing in the western United States. By contrast, acquiring real estate, grain, art, and other types of property in hopes of profiting from future market fluctuations is not at all unusual. …

Exploring A Us Immigrant – Intra-Industry Trade Link, Roger White Apr 2008

Exploring A Us Immigrant – Intra-Industry Trade Link, Roger White

Economics

We extend two strands of literature: the determinants of intra-industry trade (IIT) and the effect of immigration on trade flows. Product-level (HS10) data for US trade with 62 nations spanning the years 1989–2001 are used to construct industry-level (HS6) IIT values. A positive relationship is reported between immigration and the level of aggregate IIT. Immigration also increases vertical IIT and horizontal IIT; however, coefficients are of greater magnitude for the latter measure. Examining variation across home countries, immigrants from lower income countries appear to exert a greater influence on IIT measures than do immigrants from higher income countries.

Predicting Physical Activity In Arab American School Children, Jeffrey J. Martin, Nate Mccaughtry, Bo Shen Apr 2008

Predicting Physical Activity In Arab American School Children, Jeffrey J. Martin, Nate Mccaughtry, Bo Shen

Kinesiology, Health and Sport Studies

Theoretically grounded research on the determinants of Arab American children's physical activity is virtually nonexistent. Thus, the purpose of our investigation was to evaluate the ability of the theory of planned behavior (TPB) and social cognitive theory (SCT) to predict Arab American children's moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA). Children (N = 348, ages 10–14) completed questionnaires assessing the TPB and SCT constructs as well as MVPA. Using multiple regression analyses we were able to account for 9% of the variance in MVPA. Based on standardized beta-weights, variance accounted for, and the significance of F change, we concluded that SCT variables …

Parental Influences On Adolescent Girl's Goal Orientations, Perceived Competence, Sport Friendship Quality, And Enjoyment, Carla L. Paiffy, Jeffrey J. Martin Apr 2008

Parental Influences On Adolescent Girl's Goal Orientations, Perceived Competence, Sport Friendship Quality, And Enjoyment, Carla L. Paiffy, Jeffrey J. Martin

Kinesiology, Health and Sport Studies

The purpose of the present study was to examine the relationships among critical sport psychosocial perceptions of fathers (N=84), mothers (N=84), and daughters (N=84) in the same family (N=252). Athlete participants were young female soccer players ranging in age from 9 to 14 years. A canonical correlation analysis revealed a significant overall multivariate relationship (Wilks's λ = .485, p<.0001) and one significant function emerged (Rc = .64). The loadings suggested that athlete's perceptions of both mother and father created task involving and worry conducive climates all contributed to the multivariate relationship, predicting athlete's perceived competence, sport friendship …

Fixed-Effect Estimation Of Highly-Mobile Production Technologies, William C. Horrace, Kurt E. Schnier Apr 2008

Fixed-Effect Estimation Of Highly-Mobile Production Technologies, William C. Horrace, Kurt E. Schnier

Economics - All Scholarship

We consider fixed-effect estimation of a production function where inputs and outputs vary over time, space, and cross-sectional unit. Variability in the spatial dimension allows for time-varying individual effects, without parametric assumptions on the effects. Asymptotics along the spatial dimension provide consistency and normality of the marginal products. A finite-sample example is provided: a production function for bottom-trawler fishing vessels in the flatfish fisheries of the Bering Sea. We find significant spatial variability of output (catch) which we exploit in estimation of a harvesting function.

Perspectives On Development In Arid And Semi-Arid East Africa: Results Of A Ranking Exercise, John G. Mcpeak, Cheryl R. Doss, Christopher B. Barrett, Patti Kristjanson Apr 2008

Perspectives On Development In Arid And Semi-Arid East Africa: Results Of A Ranking Exercise, John G. Mcpeak, Cheryl R. Doss, Christopher B. Barrett, Patti Kristjanson

Economics - All Scholarship

This study investigates perspectives on development held by individuals living in arid and semi-arid areas of northern Kenya and southern Ethiopia. Overall, we find that interventions to meet basic human needs (access to water, health care and education) are the most highly desired. Projects supporting pastoral livelihoods (livestock health and marketing-oriented, restocking and conflict resolution) are second most important, followed by those that support alternatives to pastoralism (cropping, other income generating activities). Econometric analysis indicates that variation in rankings is mostly driven by variation across communities rather than across households within communities, lending support to community-based approaches to priority setting.

Policy Design And Regional Cooperation Under The Workforce Investment Act, Susan G. Mason Apr 2008

Policy Design And Regional Cooperation Under The Workforce Investment Act, Susan G. Mason

Political Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Mazmanian and Sabatier advocate the importance of legislation for successful policy implementation. Scholars such as Perkmann have identified structural factors that affect regional cooperation. Under Workforce Investment Act, legislative and structural factors in obtaining regional cooperation across traditional state and local government boundaries are analyzed in nine U.S. Midwestern metropolitan regions. Results from this study suggest there are policy design and structural factors such as the focus of actors; same year implementation of the act; and the amount of hierarchical integration of administrative entities that can be enhanced to increase the likelihood that regional cooperation will occur under WIA.

Economics Works! Experiments In High School Classrooms, Stephen L. Jackstadt, Paul Johnson, Bart J. Wilson Apr 2008

Economics Works! Experiments In High School Classrooms, Stephen L. Jackstadt, Paul Johnson, Bart J. Wilson

Economics Faculty Articles and Research

Economic experiments are a unique form of active learning. Students apply the scientific method by testing hypotheses and discovering for themselves how markets work. The authors conducted teacher training courses in experimental economics over a three-year period and conducted surveys to track teachers' adoption of classroom experiments. This paper discusses the survey results and describes how the training was revised accordingly. The primary conclusion of this article is that classroom experiments must be compatible with the school environment; that is, they should emphasize non-monetary incentives and hand-run experiments as well as be explicitly tied to school curricula.

Race-Based Intelligence Assessment Among Southern Adventist University Students, Brienna R. Thompson Apr 2008

Race-Based Intelligence Assessment Among Southern Adventist University Students, Brienna R. Thompson

Capstone Research Projects

This study investigated levels of racial bias in peer to peer intelligence assessment using a sample of 26 students in a lower division psychology course at Southern Adventist University (SAU). Statistical analyses revealed no significant age, gender, ethnicity, or class standing differences in levels of racial bias and due to the small sample size, many results were inconclusive. Statistical significance was found in the relationship between academic discipline and racial bias. Results also show that college students tend to view both their Mrican American peers and their Caucasian peers with nearly equal levels ofbias. In fact, results revealed a generally …
