Self-Censorship By Middle School Librarians, Candace V. Johnson May 2008

Self-Censorship By Middle School Librarians, Candace V. Johnson

Theses and Dissertations

Middle school librarians are faced with difficult decisions when choosing books for the middle school library collection because of the students' ages, and involvement from the administration, staff, parents and special interest groups who want to protect children from certain material. Middle school librarians may willingly or unwillingly participate in self-censorship to avoid confrontation. Middle school librarians in New Jersey were surveyed to investigate self-censorship practices. They were asked to share information about their library collection, their library policies and procedures and their thought processes during book selection. Based on the results of the study it was concluded that middle …

The Influence Of Ageism On Personnel Decision Making, Ashley Brooke Tipton Acker May 2008

The Influence Of Ageism On Personnel Decision Making, Ashley Brooke Tipton Acker

Psychology Dissertations - Archive

Ageism is a topic in today's world of great consequence, especially due to the multimillion dollar costs of age-related discrimination charges and the potential to ineffectively utilize organizational talent. Additionally, the demographic breakdown of the workforce indicates older individuals make up the majority of workers and that trend will continue for the foreseeable future. However, ageism affects both younger and older individuals; anyone in the workplace has the potential to be a victim of age-related stereotyping or discrimination. As such, this study sought to take past research a step further by examining the impact of ageism on personnel decision making …

Questions In American Sign Language: A Quantitative Analysis Of Raised And Lowered Eyebrows, Traci Patricia Weast May 2008

Questions In American Sign Language: A Quantitative Analysis Of Raised And Lowered Eyebrows, Traci Patricia Weast

Linguistics & TESOL Dissertations - Archive

Although much of linguistic information in American Sign Language (ASL) is conveyed through nonmanual signals, the majority of more than 40 years of research focuses on manual signs. As a result, we are just beginning to understand the role of the face, head, and upper body in signed languages, including eyebrow movement. While researchers generally agree that eyebrows play a role in questions of examined sign languages, they disagree whether upper face nonmanuals are syntactic or prosodic and intonational. Wilbur 2000, 2003 widens the debate to suggest a layered combination in the upper face, where eyebrows represent syntax, and other …

Beijing's Olympics: Pride, Appearance And Human Rights, Thomas Beal

Human Rights & Human Welfare

One lazy summer evening in Beijing, about fifteen years ago, my wife and I were strolling down Jianguomenwai, the bustling street adjacent to our flat in the Qijiayuan Diplomatic Compound. The day had been sweltering, and as the sun began to set the sidewalks filled with pedestrians who, like us, had escaped their stuffy apartments to take in a cool, soothing breeze.

Introduction: The Practice And Prospects Of Grandparenting In The Pacific, Dorothy Ayers Counts May 2008

Introduction: The Practice And Prospects Of Grandparenting In The Pacific, Dorothy Ayers Counts

Pacific Studies

The contributors to this special issue represent the orientations and approaches of several social science disciplines and are variously involved in interdisci plina1y endeavors. However, anthropology is the primary discipline and ethno graphy a shared methodology. It is a main task of any ethnography to make the exotic familiar and to treat the familiar as though it were exotic. The papers in this special issue achieve this for grandparenthood in the Pacific. The familiar concept of grandparenthood is shown to have multiple meanings in close examinations of how the status is achieved, for example, what it means for a person's …

Parents Or Peers? Comparing The Effects Of Demographics And Social Ties On Attitudes Towards Diversity, Jeremiah Hess May 2008

Parents Or Peers? Comparing The Effects Of Demographics And Social Ties On Attitudes Towards Diversity, Jeremiah Hess

Sociology Honors Projects

This research compared the predictive effect of social capital on attitudes towards diversity in a college environment. 'Social capital' was compared in terms of background precollege demographic characteristics, such as race and socioeconomic status, versus college social networks. Survey data was taken from a sample of randomly selected students (n=73) enrolled at a small Midwestern college. Statistical analysis found the most favorable views towards diversity among students with very diverse college social networks, regardless of demographic characteristics or precollege experiences. Further inquiry showed that campus organizations with cultural, athletic, or service components were the most likely to attract diverse memberships.

Intergenerational Educational Mobility And Child-Parent Relationships: A Response To Absolute Or Structural Mobility?, Eric Willis May 2008

Intergenerational Educational Mobility And Child-Parent Relationships: A Response To Absolute Or Structural Mobility?, Eric Willis

All Theses

Research exploring the negative effects of intergenerational educational mobility is very common throughout the social science literature. The primary question driving this research is whether those who exceed the highest level of education attained by either of their parents have less cohesive ties with their parents than those who do not. Most of this research uses a metric of absolute mobility which directly compares the child's education to the education of their mother and father. However, if more people are receiving a college degree in the child's than in the parents' generation, it is possible that the child's mobility will …

From Visit To Action: How Zoo Visitor Characteristics Influence Environmentally-Responsible Behavior, Stephanie Joseph May 2008

From Visit To Action: How Zoo Visitor Characteristics Influence Environmentally-Responsible Behavior, Stephanie Joseph

All Theses

Over the last 30 years, AZA-accredited zoos and aquariums have shifted focus from recreation to become centers of research, conservation and education. As awareness of environmental issues increases, zoos around the world have stepped up the challenge of engaging their visitors in learning experiences to enhance knowledge and awareness of conservation initiatives and eventually evoke action. Evaluation of these educational programs has also shifted from assessing whether a program works to determining for whom it works and why. The purpose of this study is to explore the role of locus of control, motivation, previous life experiences, personal interest and knowledge …

Building Teacher Capital In Pre-Service Teachers: Reflections On A New Teacher-Education Initiative., Tania Ferfolja May 2008

Building Teacher Capital In Pre-Service Teachers: Reflections On A New Teacher-Education Initiative., Tania Ferfolja

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

This discussion considers a new pre-service teacher education initiative at the University of Western Sydney, called Classmates. Classmates aims to prepare pre-service teachers to work in diverse and challenging schools. The paper argues that the neo-liberal industrial model of mass teacher education may be limited in its capacity to adequately prepare pre-service teachers for the difficulties they may encounter in a society where socio-cultural inequality is growing. It points out that pre-service teacher-education needs to build teacher capital to better prepare graduates and to buffer the transition from tertiary student to beginning teacher. Classmates offers one way that this may …

Discipline, Facial Affect Recognition And Self-Efficacy, Julie Harris May 2008

Discipline, Facial Affect Recognition And Self-Efficacy, Julie Harris

Graduate Theses

The present study explored facial affect recognition, discipline and self-efficacy correlates, predicted using the Social Cognitive Theory framework. A sample of undergraduate students (N—114) from The University of Texas of the Permian Basin, were surveyed on parental style, discipline, self-efficacy, and then tested for facial affect recognition. The results indicated that participants reporting more corporal punishment scored lower on facial affect than those reporting less corporal punishment (p < .05). No significance was found for corporal punishment and self-efficacy (p > .05). The parental style of the father emerged as a significant predictor for the relationship between corporal punishment and facial affect recognition (p < .05). Results appear to support the idea that the social environment parents, especially fathers, create via discipline may hinder ability to interpret emotion. One important implication of this study is that paternal influence may be more vital to emotional detection development than previously considered.

German Banks In The Global Economy: Global Pressures And Public Sector Banking, Jason A. Gorn May 2008

German Banks In The Global Economy: Global Pressures And Public Sector Banking, Jason A. Gorn

Pitzer Senior Theses

German banking is distinguished from neighboring European banking systems by the influence of its public sector banks. Nearly 50 percent of German banking is carried out by government owned state banks (ländesbanken) and regional savings banks (sparkassen) whose roots date from the 18 th century. German banks play a particularly important role in the economy and exert more control over firms and corporations than do their American counterparts. German banks tend to be less profitable than foreign counterparts. German public banks were originally founded to foster local and regional business. However, the operations of German public sector banks now extend …

Craft worker retention is a constant concern of construction firms who selfperform portions of projects. These companies must maintain an understanding oftheir work force. A methodology is presented in this study for studying information in readily available employee databases to gain such an understanding. Using a sample of 10 of Missouri's 17 largest contractors, that employ 5,277 craft workers; this study examined the employee databases to identify differences in mean length of employment based on hire age, craft, union affiliation, and company size. The analysis of variance statistical technique was utilized to test four null hypotheses. Based on the test …

Broken Masks: A Study In Sanity, Jessica Ann Schmidt May 2008

Broken Masks: A Study In Sanity, Jessica Ann Schmidt

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

"Broken Masks: A Study in Sanity" is a mixed work of fiction and nonfiction short stories that explore the lives of people who are off center of normal. Some of the protagonists are different because of psychological trauma, some are different because of the circumstances of their birth, and some are different because what is normal to them seems horrific to the reader. The idea of the mask, sense of Self or social role, has interested me since my undergraduate days in psychology, and I have attempted to blend current psychological understanding of trauma and psyche with fictional and nonfictional …

Nonlinearity And Temporal Dependence, Xiaohong Chen, Lars P. Hansen, Marine Carrasco May 2008

Nonlinearity And Temporal Dependence, Xiaohong Chen, Lars P. Hansen, Marine Carrasco

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

Nonlinearities in the drift and diffusion coefficients influence temporal dependence in scalar diffusion models. We study this link using two notions of temporal dependence: beta-mixing and rho-mixing. We show that beta-mixing and rho-mixing with exponential decay are essentially equivalent concepts for scalar diffusions. For stationary diffusions that fail to be rho-mixing, we show that they are still beta-mixing except that the decay rates are slower than exponential. For such processes we find transformations of the Markov states that have finite variances but infinite spectral densities at frequency zero. Some have spectral densities that diverge at frequency zero in a manner …

Unit Root And Cointegrating Limit Theory When Initialization Is In The Infinite Past, Peter C.B. Phillips, Tassos Magdalinos May 2008

Unit Root And Cointegrating Limit Theory When Initialization Is In The Infinite Past, Peter C.B. Phillips, Tassos Magdalinos

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

It is well known that unit root limit distributions are sensitive to initial conditions in the distant past. If the distant past initialization is extended to the infinite past, the initial condition dominates the limit theory producing a faster rate of convergence, a limiting Cauchy distribution for the least squares coefficient and a limit normal distribution for the t ratio. This amounts to the tail of the unit root process wagging the dog of the unit root limit theory. These simple results apply in the case of a univariate autoregression with no intercept. The limit theory for vector unit root …

Long Memory And Long Run Variation, Peter C.B. Phillips May 2008

Long Memory And Long Run Variation, Peter C.B. Phillips

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

A commonly used defining property of long memory time series is the power law decay of the autocovariance function. Some alternative methods of deriving this property are considered working from the alternate definition in terms of a fractional pole in the spectrum at the origin. The methods considered involve the use of (i) Fourier transforms of generalized functions, (ii) asymptotic expansions of Fourier integrals with singularities, (iii) direct evaluation using hypergeometric function algebra, and (iv) conversion to a simple gamma integral. The paper is largely pedagogical but some novel methods and results involving complete asymptotic series representations are presented. The …
