Each participant took a survey pertaining to their past encounters with the police. The researcher was trying to determine if there was: a) a difference between races in the amount of people who had been questioned by the police for looking suspicious, b) the reason why the people who had been questioned felt they had, c) if there was a difference between sexes and questioning for looking suspicious and d) if any sex and race combination was …

Effects Of Music On Emotional And Physiological Responses, Jenifer Fritz May 2008

Effects Of Music On Emotional And Physiological Responses, Jenifer Fritz

Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal

Past research has suggested that music with fast tempos and rhythms have different physiological and emotional effects than music with slow tempos and rhythms. If these beliefs and studies are accurate, an individual will have physiological changes and report different emotions and moods after listening to music, and these changes will depend on the style of music that was heard. Twenty-nine participants were asked to report current emotions, moods, and musical preferences before and after listening to one of four musical selections: rock, rap, classical, and no music. Emotion and mood state were not affected by any of the musical …

Body Dissatisfaction Across Gender: An Etiological Exploration Of Self-Discrepancy, Self-Objectification, And Their Manifestations Among Men And Women, Kathryn Smith May 2008

Body Dissatisfaction Across Gender: An Etiological Exploration Of Self-Discrepancy, Self-Objectification, And Their Manifestations Among Men And Women, Kathryn Smith

Psychology Honors Projects

Body image has been the subject of much study recently, as the prevalence of eating disorders is an issue of increasing concern, especially among women. Comparatively few studies have examined male body image. Researchers have argued that men are more likely to exhibit muscle dysmorphia than eating disorders in response to body dissatisfaction. The present study consists of two studies: Study 1 compared etiological similarities between disordered eating and muscle dysmorphia; Study 2 explored the phenomenon of self-objectification in men. Results specify the parallels and differences in the ways in which men and women develop and experience body image.

Comparing Parent Ratings Of Referred Preschoolers On The Child Behavior Checklist And Behavior Assessment System For Children - Second Edition, Jennifer L. Bour May 2008

Comparing Parent Ratings Of Referred Preschoolers On The Child Behavior Checklist And Behavior Assessment System For Children - Second Edition, Jennifer L. Bour

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

It is essential for school psychologists assessing children to use instruments that are reliable and valid. The focus of the current study is to determine whether or not the parent preschool versions of two popular behavior rating instruments, the Behavior Assessment System for Children – Second Edition (BASC-2; Reynolds & Kamphaus, 2004) and Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL; Achenbach & Rescorla, 2000), are consistent measures of similarly-named behavioral constructs in preschool-aged children. Parents of 95 preschoolers referred to a nonprofit child evaluation clinic because of behavioral or developmental concerns completed both the BASC-2 and CBCL during an initial evaluation session.

The Effects Of Personal Characteristics And Religious Orientations On Identification With All Of Humanity And Humanitarian Behaviors, Derek Z. Brown May 2008

The Effects Of Personal Characteristics And Religious Orientations On Identification With All Of Humanity And Humanitarian Behaviors, Derek Z. Brown

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

This research examined the effects of personal characteristics (empathy and authoritarianism) and religious orientations (Christian humanitarianism and religious fundamentalism) on identification with all humanity and resulting humanitarian behavior.

This research also tested two hypothetical models (personality is primary, religion is primary) for the relationship between identification with all humanity and resulting humanitarian behavior. Two samples, consisting of 221 students and 158 adults, completed measures of authoritarianism, religious fundamentalism, dispositional empathy, Christian humanitarianism, identification with all humanity, and an assessment of humanitarian behaviors.

As hypothesized, Christian humanitarianism and empathy were positively correlated with identification with all humanity and humanitarian behavior. Furthermore, …

The Effectiveness Of A "None Of The Above" Answer Option In Multiple Choice Grammar Tests, Andrea Sides May 2008

The Effectiveness Of A "None Of The Above" Answer Option In Multiple Choice Grammar Tests, Andrea Sides

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

This study examines the use of "none of the above" (NOTA) as an answer option in a multiple-choice grammar test. Results from previous research on this topic have been mixed. Two forms of a grammar test, one without a NOTA option and one with a NOTA option, were developed and administered to a sample of 160 undergraduate students. Differences between the forms in item difficulty and discrimination were examined. Analysis revealed no differences in item discrimination or item difficulty between items without a NOTA option and items with a NOTA option. A discussion of the results, limitations, and suggestions for …

Evaluating Faculty Performance: A Comparison Of Behaviorally Anchored Rating Scales Developed For Western Kentucky University Psychology Department Faculty, Travis Yanul May 2008

Evaluating Faculty Performance: A Comparison Of Behaviorally Anchored Rating Scales Developed For Western Kentucky University Psychology Department Faculty, Travis Yanul

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The current study consisted of a comparison of Behaviorally Anchored Rating Scales (BARS) developed in 2001 and 2008 for the evaluation of the performance of faculty in the Western Kentucky University Psychology Department. BARS generally are less susceptible to various types of rating error than are other rating formats, and are highly relevant to the target job because they utilize behavioral examples of performance. Furthermore, BARS development requires the participation of job incumbents. In both 2001 and 2008, Psychology Department faculty members were involved in every phase of the development process of the BARS instruments addressed in the current study. …

Economic Inequality In The New European Union: Are Monetary Policies In The European Union Unfair For Certain Countries?, Gregory Eric Banach May 2008

Economic Inequality In The New European Union: Are Monetary Policies In The European Union Unfair For Certain Countries?, Gregory Eric Banach

Dissertations

This research is focused on the affect one uniform monetary policy will have on the less developed countries that entered the European Union (EU) in 2004. One of the challenges facing the new entrants involves the required implementation of monetary policy goals, even though these new entrants do not have a vote on how the monetary policy is determined. Monetary policy in the EU is the responsibility of the European Central Bank (ECB) who has a stated goal price stability. It is possible to use the Taylor Rule to test whether the ECB focuses on price stability for both old …

The Relation Of Fr Behaviour To Aai Scales, Elspeth M. Evans, Sandi Bento, David R. Pederson, Greg Moran May 2008

The Relation Of Fr Behaviour To Aai Scales, Elspeth M. Evans, Sandi Bento, David R. Pederson, Greg Moran

Psychology Presentations

Attachment theory describes the bonds between caregivers and children that serve a protective function for children.

The FR theory developed by Main and Hesse (1990) proposes that unmonitored parental behaviour, or frightened, frightening and dissociative (FR) behaviour, stemming from a history of Unresolved/disoriented (U/d) trauma, disorganizes the attachment relationship.

The parent is a source of fear and is thus unavailable as a source of safety and protection.

Behavioural And Affective Precursors To Disorganized Attachment In The Still-Face Procedure At 4-Months, Lindsey M. Forbes, Greg Moran, David R. Pederson May 2008

Behavioural And Affective Precursors To Disorganized Attachment In The Still-Face Procedure At 4-Months, Lindsey M. Forbes, Greg Moran, David R. Pederson

Psychology Presentations

We explored whether disorganization in the SSP at 13-months could be predicted from infant affect and behaviour in the SFP at 4- months.

We hypothesized that infants in disorganized relationships would have the most difficulty regulating their affect and behaviour in the SFP.

Infants in disorganized relationships were expected to display greater negativity (e.g., crying, negative vocalizations, stress indicators such as spitting up) throughout the SFP, compared to those in organized relationships.

Both Maternal Sensitivity And Atypical Maternal Behavior Independently Predict Attachment Security And Disorganization In Adolescent Mother–Infant Dyads, Greg Moran, Lindsey M. Forbes, Elspeth Evans, George M. Tarabulsy, Sheri Madigan May 2008

Both Maternal Sensitivity And Atypical Maternal Behavior Independently Predict Attachment Security And Disorganization In Adolescent Mother–Infant Dyads, Greg Moran, Lindsey M. Forbes, Elspeth Evans, George M. Tarabulsy, Sheri Madigan

Psychology Presentations

On the basis of these findings, at odds with current models of the origins of secure vs disorganized attachment, the current study examined the association between distinct qualities of maternal interaction and attachment in a single study.

The participants in the current study were adolescent mothers and their infants, a population that has been shown to be at substantial developmental risk and to exhibit a range of markedly atypical interactions with their infants (Jaffee, Caspi, Moffitt, Belsky, and Silva, 2001).

The Good, Bad, And Ugly: Doctoral Educational Experiences Of Selected African American Women, Augusta Deneal

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to understand the complex phenomena of African American doctoral persistence. Specifically, this study described the experiences of eight African American women in terms of how they preserved, persisted, and succeed in their doctoral programs. This research study used the Critical Race Theory as a theoretical foundation with insights particularly from Black Feminists (Collins, 1990, 1994; Forman, 1997; Hooks, 1984) and rising minority scholars (Green & Scott, 2003; HowardHamilton, 2003; Jarmon, 2003; Johnson-Bailey, 2003; Jones, 2005). Grounded theory methodology (Glaser & Strauss, 1967; Strauss & Corbin, 1990) was used to generate a theory of doctoral …

Hazard Adaptations Along The Ohio River: A Case Study Of Bushman's Lake, Clark County, Indiana, Jennifer L. Lathem May 2008

Hazard Adaptations Along The Ohio River: A Case Study Of Bushman's Lake, Clark County, Indiana, Jennifer L. Lathem

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Hazard researchers define a hazard as a threat to people and their belongings (Cutter 2001). An adaptation, for the purposes of this research, is any alteration, physical or behavioral, made by a person in which the person is better able to survive in their "hazardous" natural environment. The challenge facing individuals and communities is the ability to adapt to these hazards so as to continue with normal everyday life. People living near a waterway are faced with flooding, which becomes a hazard when it alters everyday social structures. The purpose of this study is to identify flood hazard adaptations in …

Integration Of Remote Sensing And Census Data For Land-Use And Land Cover Classification And Population Estimation In Indianapolis, Indiana, Guiying Li

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Increasing population and economic growth has resulted in rapid urban expansion in the past decades. Timely and accurately mapping urban land-use and land-cover (LULC) and associated population dist1ibution are often required for many applications such as urban management and planning, and environmental monitoring and assessment. Although many techniques have been developed, urban LULC classification is still a challenge based on remote sensing data. This research explored the integration of Landsat ETM+ image and census data for improving urban LULC classification accuracy, focusing on the distinction of different densities of residential use. The housing data were examined for use at three …

Brunswick Me: De-Militarizing The Bnas, Anne Holland, Brett Richardson, Richard Barringer

Planning

Closure of the Brunswick Naval Air Station in 2011 will have profound economic impacts on the entire mid-coast Maine region of Maine, with an estimated loss of 6,500 jobs and $330 million annual income. Throughout the Base Realignment and Closure process, Brunswick, the region, and the State of Maine followed federal rules and developed the federally-funded Brunswick Local Redevelopment Authority (BLRA) to plan for reuse of the 3300 acre base. In its planning process, the BLRA adhered to a number of well thought-out Guiding Principles, including the use of extensive public participation and the consideration of “smart growth” principles and …

Archived Theses and Dissertations

A qualitative approach was used to study the etiology of male sex work in Egypt and report on issues related to sexual identity, sociodemographic characteristics, and work and HIV contexts of male sex workers. Seven male sex workers aged between 17 and 37 were interviewed in Cairo and Alexandria. This preliminary, exploratory study suggests the existence of a strong relationship between childhood sexual abuse and later involvement in sex work. Other secondary factors driving some youth into sex work include poverty, inadequate salaries, unemployment, low education levels and other types of childhood maltreatment including physical, emotional and psychological abuse and …

Rehab Or Relocation? Estimating The Demand For Cocaine Through An American Port City Analysis, Gustave A. Bartuska May 2008

Rehab Or Relocation? Estimating The Demand For Cocaine Through An American Port City Analysis, Gustave A. Bartuska

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

Over the past five decades American drug policy can succinctly be classified by two words: expensive and punitive. American drug policy makers have conducted the “war on drugs” largely through supply side intervention. As the theory goes, by attacking drug producers, drug prices will rise due to the increased risk faced by suppliers, this risk will in turn be passed along to consumers in the form of higher prices. In order to critically asses the merits of such an expensive antidrug policy it is essential to estimate the price elasticity of demand for drugs.

Non-Farm Proprietors And The Nebraska Economy: 1997-2006, Randolph L. Cantrell

Rural Initiative Program: Publications and Reports

Non-farm proprietors are of growing importance in the Nebraska economy. This paper utilizes recently released data from the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) to further explore this important class of workers, and to identify trends in their distribution and impact across Nebraska’s 93 counties. These data demonstrate that growth in non-farm proprietor jobs has not been matched by growth in income for those jobs, and that the discrepancy between jobs and income is most pronounced in rural portions of the state.

Perseverance And Play: Making A Movie For The Youtube Generation, Ramona Islam, Leslie Porter May 2008

Perseverance And Play: Making A Movie For The Youtube Generation, Ramona Islam, Leslie Porter

Urban Library Journal

In place of a traditional library orientation lecture at Fairfield University, librarians created a choose-your-own-adventure movie for use in the classroom with an audience response system (ARS), allowing students to vote using clickers. The library administration took a risk by sponsoring the project, but the library director believed in her staff and let us run with our ideas. When we proposed the movie, we did not have an idea for the script; we simply knew we wanted to make a movie and show it in class. Why did we decide to do this when the status quo wasn't disastrous?
