Endogenous Asymmetric Information And International Equity Home Bias: The Effects Of Portfolio Size And Information Costs, John M. Barron, Jinlan Ni Jun 2008

Endogenous Asymmetric Information And International Equity Home Bias: The Effects Of Portfolio Size And Information Costs, John M. Barron, Jinlan Ni

Economics Faculty Publications

Equity home bias is one of the major puzzles in international finance. This paper investigates the impact of asymmetric information on equity home bias in a rational expectation model where portfolio managers differ in their levels of initial portfolio size and information acquisition is endogenous. The model characterizes the information acquisition and investment decisions made by each portfolio manager, and the resulting equilibrium. We find that portfolio managers with larger portfolio size acquire information about the foreign asset; this is consistent with new evidence linking the degree of home bias across portfolio managers to portfolio size.

Defeasible Inference With Circumscriptive Owl Ontologies, Stephan Grimm, Pascal Hitzler Jun 2008

Defeasible Inference With Circumscriptive Owl Ontologies, Stephan Grimm, Pascal Hitzler

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

The Web Ontology Language (OWL) adheres to the openworld assumption and can thus not be used for forms of nonmonotonic reasoning or defeasible inference, an acknowledged desirable feature in open Semantic Web environments. We investigate the use of the formalism of circumscriptive description logics (DLs) to realise defeasible inference within the OWL framework. By example, we demonstrate how reasoning with (restricted) circumscribed OWL ontologies facilitates various forms of defeasible inference, also in comparison to alternative approaches. Moreover, we sketch an extension to DL tableaux for handling the circumscriptive case and report on a preliminary implementation.

La Cultura En Disputa: Pintura Figurativa E Identidad Étnica Entre Los Ishir (Alto Paraguay), Ana Maria Spadafora, Luisina Morano

Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America

Social Networks And Cultivated Plants: Exchange Of Planting Materials And Knowledge, Joana Cabral De Oliveira

Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America

E-Government For Development: A Case Study From Mozambique, Gertrudes Macueve Jun 2008

E-Government For Development: A Case Study From Mozambique, Gertrudes Macueve

The African Journal of Information Systems

This paper draws upon Amartya Sen’s concept of "development as freedom" as an effective approach to analyze e-government for development initiatives. An interpretive analysis of three projects ongoing in Mozambique report that although some "freedoms" are currently reachable through these initiatives, a lot needs to be done to achieve "development as freedom." The use of this theoretical approach provides a valuable contribution to the research domain of ICTs for development. This article also draws practical recommendations to assist managers of e-government projects in Mozambique, as well as other developing countries.

Emergence Of The E-Government Artifact In An Environment Of Social Exclusion In Kenya, Nixon Muganda Ochara Jun 2008

Emergence Of The E-Government Artifact In An Environment Of Social Exclusion In Kenya, Nixon Muganda Ochara

The African Journal of Information Systems

Purpose: E-Government, introduced in African countries under the banner of New Public Management (NPM), is envisaged to fundamentally aid in improving governance in developing countries. The imported model of E-Government is therefore transferred to African countries as a panacea to bad governance by carriers such as international donor agencies, consultants, Information Technology vendors and Western-trained civil servants. Improved governance is expected to impact on the socio-economic development of these countries implementing E-Government, as an NPM instrument. This article recognizes that E-Government success, which is critically dependent on the World Wide Web, requires socially inclusive national information infrastructure.

The purpose …

Information Technology Acceptance In South Africa: An Investigation Of Perceived Usefulness, Perceived Ease Of Use, And Actual System Use Constructs, Udo Richard Averweg Jun 2008

Information Technology Acceptance In South Africa: An Investigation Of Perceived Usefulness, Perceived Ease Of Use, And Actual System Use Constructs, Udo Richard Averweg

The African Journal of Information Systems

Information technology (IT) acceptance studies pay much attention to issues of significance in assessing the contributions of variables explaining IT usage for decision-making in organizations. Davis’ Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) states that Perceived Usefulness (PU) and Perceived Ease of Use (PEOU) are the two factors that govern the adoption and use of information technology. Actual System Use (behavior) consists of the number of times of systems use. The author conducted a survey of 31 organizations in KwaZulu/Natal, a region in South Africa, which implemented an Executive Information System (EIS). A validated survey instrument was administered to an EIS stakeholder in …

Organizational Culture And Change: Understanding The Western Herald's Newsroom Culture, Sarah Ling Wei Lee Jun 2008

Organizational Culture And Change: Understanding The Western Herald's Newsroom Culture, Sarah Ling Wei Lee

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study is to explore organizational culture and change in a college newspaper's newsroom. Student journalists often use college newspapers as a means to get editorial experience and also to get published. Even so, the college newspaper newsroom is unlike a typical metropolitan or local community newspaper's newsroom in the way that it experiences change. College newspapers encounter organizational change as part of the newsroom's inner workings constantly because of frequent turnover and other factors. As a result, they are suitable for understanding how staff members make sense of newsroom culture in a dynamic, changing environment. Two …

Ferro Ingenio: An Archaeological And Ethnohistorical View Of Labor And Empire In Colonial Porco And Potosi, Brendan J. M. Weaver

Masters Theses

Porco, Bolivia, is known as the source of silver which ornamented the Inca temple of Coricancha, and as the seat of the earliest Spanish mining operations in the Andes. The colonial silver processing site of Ferro Ingenio, on the outskirts of Porco, is comprised of domestic and industrial structures, constructed and used over multiple occupations. Ferro Ingenio is the best preserved and most complete site of its kind in the Porco region and the first Andean stamp-mill ever to be excavated. This investigation uses ethnohistorical and archaeological evidence to examine the organization and the changing social roles of colonial labor. …

Interculturality And The Indigenization Of Modernity: A View From Amazonian Ecuador, Norman E. Whitten Jr Jun 2008

Interculturality And The Indigenization Of Modernity: A View From Amazonian Ecuador, Norman E. Whitten Jr

Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America

After introducing the history and topography of the "forest of Canelos," I turn to the central theme of this essay, "the indigenization of modernity." I next illustrate pervasive mythic cosmology to orient the reader to Canelos Quichua Amazonian perspectives on cultural topography. The relationships that obtain in language, history and ecology between the "lowlands" and the 'highlands" address the subject of ethnogenesis in indigenous thought and in written historical portrayal. Bulding toward an indigenous structure of conjuncture, I treat "epistemic distortion" in various academic sectors and attept to counter or deflect what I take to be such distortions. In so …

Cannibals, Amazons, And Social Reproduction In Amazonia, Astrid Steverlynck Jun 2008

Cannibals, Amazons, And Social Reproduction In Amazonia, Astrid Steverlynck

Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America

This paper analyzes Amerindian representations of Amazon-like women and cannibalism in the context of ideas about the processes of creation. While cannibalism focuses on the socialization of death through male agency and control int he context of relationships with external others, the myths about Amaon-like women focus on the social control of sexuality and female creativity (pregnancy and birth) through the establishment of male-female cooperation. Both discourses rely on the intrinsic qualities of male and female creativity that constitute the elementary structure of Amerindian cosmology. they explore the two most fundamental moments in the chain of creative processes that constitute …
