Traits Of Charismatic Leaders Who Have Led Their Followers Astray, Jon Olson Jun 2008

Traits Of Charismatic Leaders Who Have Led Their Followers Astray, Jon Olson

Theses and Graduate Projects

Charismatic leadership is highly desired by organizations that want to make fast large-scale changes. Followers can be motivated by a leader whose charisma touches them by speech, action, and vision. This leadership style can be used in positive ways to advance the cause of the group or in negative ways that result in harm and destruction. Charismatic leadership only tends to magnify the results. By studying past charismatic leaders who led their followers astray, the possibility of finding common negative traits exists. The history, behaviors, and writings of Adolf Hitler, Jim Jones, and David Koresh were analyzed in this paper. …

Mass (On)Line

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

Hu Jintao participated in an online discussion today (his first) with Chinese netizens where he answered questions about his online habits (he emphasized that he uses the internet to see what Chinese people think about the Communist Party—the mass line for a new generation). When NPR broadcast a report on Hu’s online summit this morning, they noted that Hu met with Chinese “netizens,” and then proceeded to define the term. Regardless of whether “netizen” is a new term to you, or you are a netizen, here are a few additional readings and source pages about the Chinese internet.

Locked Out: The 1905 Dispute Between The Agibsltu And The Master Builders Association, John Hogan Jun 2008

Locked Out: The 1905 Dispute Between The Agibsltu And The Master Builders Association, John Hogan

Articles

When the issue of a lockout in Dublin comes up for discussion, invariably, the Great Lockout of 1913 springs to mind. This event, in both its scale 4 and scope, has tended to crowd out the examination of all other lockouts that occurred in the city in the early years of the 20th century. Beside the Great Lockout contemporary industrial disputes have tended to pale in comparison. As a result of its magnitude, the 1913 lockout has provided a vast reservoir of research material that has been heavily mined. However, this concentration on 1913 could lead to the erroneous conclusion …

Civil Society: Agent Of Change In Egypt, Ola Kubbara Jun 2008

Civil Society: Agent Of Change In Egypt, Ola Kubbara

Archived Theses and Dissertations

Egypt has been dominated by an authoritarian regime for decades now, which ensured its ultimate monopoly over power and government, as well as over civil society. Civil society in Egypt is a very important factor that determines the development of the process of democratization, as well as the political and social stability of the state. The role of civil society, the degree of its autonomy or its repression, reflects on all aspects of political, social and economic spheres. The lagging democracy and the augmented level of social repression and stagnation in Egypt, is due to the weakness of civil society. …

The Lord Of The Wolves?, Haiyan Lee Jun 2008

The Lord Of The Wolves?, Haiyan Lee

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

Since hitting the bookstores in China in 2004, Wolf Totem has been a most unlikely bestseller and a phenomenon to be reckoned with. From the start, it has been riddled with paradoxes: it was written by a political science professor who had to remain anonymous because of his run-ins with authority in 1989; it went on to win ten domestic literary prizes with the endorsements of party officials, scholars, and business tycoons alike; the audio version was serialized on Radio Beijing; its sales figure is dwarfed only by that of Mao’s Little Red Book in the history of modern publishing …

Internal Executive Coaching Program: Exploring The Experiences, Benefits, And Recommendations For Participants And Organizations, Susan D. Poulos

Theses and Graduate Projects

Organizations are searching for ways to enhance leadership skills to meet strategic goals. While external coaching programs have been used for years, internal coaching programs are a more recent development and little research has been conducted to examine their effectiveness. The purpose of this study is to examine the experience of managers who participated in an internal executive coaching program in order to explore the benefits and recommendations for participants and organizations. A case study of one organization's Internal Executive Coaching Program …

A Visual Top Five

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

For those seeking a little visual stimulation to perk up the mid-June doldrums:

1. A new online magazine called 1000 Words is currently featuring a set of images from Chinese artist Li Wei (follow the main link and then select Li Wei). The photographs feature Li as an irrepressible Superman with poor aim—head often buried (in the ground, through a car windshield, under ice), he appears to have hurtled forward without pause and Michael Grieves, who wrote the accompanying essay, draws analogies between Li’s captured falls and pell-mell Chinese development.

2. The Council on Foreign Relations has posted a slideshow …

Biodiesel Production: Focus On Palm Oil And Jatropha, Kepifri Lakoh, E. Wesley F. Peterson

Cornhusker Economics

Given high gasoline prices and the negative environmental effects of burning fossil fuels, there is increased interest in alternative energy sources, including biofuels. Brazil and the United States have been leading the way with ethanol production derived from sugar cane and corn. Recently, there has been increased interest in another biofuel, biodiesel, particularly in Europe (the leading producer). Biodiesel, a non-petroleum-based diesel fuel, can be produced from the transesterification of vegetable oils or animal fats. In the United States, most biodiesel is made from rapeseed (canola) or soybeans. But elsewhere, there are other biodiesel feedstocks such as palm oil and …

The Gate Of Heavenly Pacification, P. K. Cassel Jun 2008

The Gate Of Heavenly Pacification, P. K. Cassel

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

Two weeks ago, the nineteenth anniversary of the suppression of the student movement of 1989 passed. Although the anniversary passed more quietly than usual, Tian’anmen 天安門 keeps its special place in our minds and few places in China can compete with the stature of the gate and the square that bears its name.

For five hundred years, the gate was an important site for official functions during the Ming and Qing dynasties, and following the fall of the empire, the gate has grown in prominence. When the republic was inaugurated in 1912, the first president Yuan Shikai used the gate …

Reluctant Virginity: The Relationship Between Sexual Status And Self-Esteem, Dina Dimauro Jun 2008

Reluctant Virginity: The Relationship Between Sexual Status And Self-Esteem, Dina Dimauro

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to identify group differences between sexual status (reluctant virgins, satisfied virgins, and non-virgins) in college students. Specifically, this study explored differences between groups in self-esteem (global, social, and body), dating (length of relationship and number of dating partners), and the beliefs in the double standard mediating differences in self-esteem. It was hypothesized that reluctant virgins would have lower self-esteem and shorter relationships than satisfied virgins and non-virgins. There was modest support for the stated hypotheses: reluctant virgins had lower social self esteem (M= 114.4) than non-virgins (M= 138.5). Reluctant virgins …

Preserving The Premier’S Calligraphy At Beichuan Middle School, Richard Kraus Jun 2008

Preserving The Premier’S Calligraphy At Beichuan Middle School, Richard Kraus

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

The Beichuan Middle School lost a thousand students in May’s devastating Sichuan earthquake. When Premier Wen Jiabao visited the school’s temporary quarters, he wrote four characters on a blackboard to inspire the students: “distress rejuvenates a nation” (多难兴邦). After his departure, teachers and students could not bear to erase his chalk inscription, which was covered in plastic until the Sichuan Cultural Relics Bureau could devise a method for permanently preservingWen’s handwriting.

Although Premier Wen’s chalk on a blackboard may seem difficult to preserve, China has a deeply established tradition of copying calligraphy. Many of the great works of past masters …

Articulating Identity: Refining Postcolonial And Whiteness Perspectives On Race Within Communication Studies, Gordon Alley-Young Jun 2008

Articulating Identity: Refining Postcolonial And Whiteness Perspectives On Race Within Communication Studies, Gordon Alley-Young

Publications and Research

This paper juxtaposes postcolonial and whiteness scholarship to identify gaps and clarify influences on critical race scholarship within communication studies. This paper considers the multiplicity of each perspective and identifies the focus on race and the body as communicative texts as a linkage that unites the three perspectives. How each perspective informs a communicative understanding of race is explored through the constructs of Cartesian dualism, performance, and the gaze. The paper concludes with suggestions for future directions for interrogating race within the communication discipline, including a consideration of how white privilege is extended to and assumed by individuals who are …
