Is There A Perception Of A Glass Ceiling? The Relationship Between Gender And Promotional Opportunities, Cassandra L. Matthews

Sociology & Criminal Justice Theses & Dissertations

This thesis is an exploratory study which examines the perceptions of a glass ceiling for females employed in the field of corrections. Interviews with fourteen women who are or have worked in various job rankings in the correctional field provided the data for this study. Participants described their perceptions of barriers facing women seeking a promotion. Themes identified include the balance between their career and their home life, personal encounters with sexual harassment and the amount of interaction with other males and females while employed in the correctional setting.

This research addresses two central research questions: 1. Is there a …

Transforming The Library: The Case For Libraries To End Incremental Measures And Solve Problems For Their Campuses Now, Janice Simmons-Welburn, Georgie Donovan, Laura Bender

Library Faculty Research and Publications

In an article published in the Chronicle of Higher Education, University of Texas System Chancellor Mark Yudof wrote, "Mark Twain would recognize the situation. Everyone talks about the governance and financing of higher education, although, as in the case of the weather, few feel that they can do anything about it"' Much agony has been expressed over higher education's immediate future in the United States and elsewhere, given the movement to regulate academic and financial management from the outside. Many colleges and universities respond to societal pressures by pursuing change in small, incremental steps. Yet those same pressures for accountability, …

Changing Roles Of Parental Economic Resources In Children's Education Attainment, Yunju Nam, Jin Huang Jul 2008

Changing Roles Of Parental Economic Resources In Children's Education Attainment, Yunju Nam, Jin Huang

Center for Social Development Research

We investigate whether the relationship between parents’ economic resources and children’s educational attainment has changed over time by comparing two cohorts from the Panel Study of Income Dynamics. We examine multiple measures of economic resources, including income, net worth, liquid assets, and homeownership. We employ probit regressions and Chow tests in multivariate analyses. Results show that the associations between parents’ liquid assets and college attendance became significantly stronger among the later cohort, suggesting the increasing importance of liquid assets. of particular interest is a change in the role of negative liquid assets (unsecured debt exceeding savings) in high school graduation: …

Household Assets And Health In China: Evidence And Policy Implications, Baorong Guo, Lin Zhang, Michael Sherraden Jul 2008

Household Assets And Health In China: Evidence And Policy Implications, Baorong Guo, Lin Zhang, Michael Sherraden

Center for Social Development Research

China’s health care reform of the 1990s has not yielded much success. The market-oriented health system has resulted in declines in fairness of health services and efficiency of investment in the health sector. Further health care reform will be required. Among many options, asset-based policy has demonstrated some potential in domestic policy development. To provide evidence to inform health policy development in China, this study focuses on effects of household assets on health in China. Specifically, the current study examines how household assets may affect health status and how assets differ from income in predicting health status. Using a random …

Modern Constitutional Democracy And Imperialism, James Tully Jul 2008

Modern Constitutional Democracy And Imperialism, James Tully

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

To what extent is the development of modern constitutional democracy as a state form in the West and its spread around the world implicated in western imperialism? This has been a leading question of legal scholarship over the last thirty years. James Tully draws on this scholarship to present a preliminary answer. Part I sets out seven central features of modern constitutional democracy and its corresponding international institutions of law and government. Part II sets out three major imperial roles that these legal and political institutions have played, and continue to play. And finally, Part III surveys ways in which …

Nonparametric Prewhitening Estimators For Conditional Quantiles, Liangjun Su, Aman Ullah Jul 2008

Nonparametric Prewhitening Estimators For Conditional Quantiles, Liangjun Su, Aman Ullah

Research Collection School Of Economics

We define a nonparametric prewhitening method for estimating conditional quantiles based on local linear quantile regression. We characterize the bias, variance and asymptotic normality of the proposed estimator. Under weak conditions our estimator can achieve bias reduction and have the same variance as the local linear quantile estimators. A small set of Monte Carlo simulations is carried out to illustrate the performance of our estimators. An application to US gross domestic product data demonstrates the usefulness of our methodology.

The New Securocracy And The "Police Concept" Of Public Sector Worker Identity, Cliff Oswick, Stephen Matthias Harney, Gerard Hanlon Jul 2008

The New Securocracy And The "Police Concept" Of Public Sector Worker Identity, Cliff Oswick, Stephen Matthias Harney, Gerard Hanlon

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

In recent years we have seen the emergence of a "new securocracy," a generalization of responsibility for fighting terror within the public sector. Here we consider the nature and extent of this securocratic shift. In particular, the identity implications for the public sector worker are explored and we contend that there is an inherent tension between "serving" and "policing" the public in many public sector jobs. We also discuss the way in which a securocratic identity is simultaneously embraced and resisted. Finally, we present some tentative insights into an alternative way of thinking about identity work, which offers a means …

A Semiparametric Stochastic Volatility Model, Jun Yu Jul 2008

A Semiparametric Stochastic Volatility Model, Jun Yu

Research Collection School Of Economics

This paper examines how volatility responds to return news in the context of stochastic volatility (SV) using a nonparametric method. The correlation structure in the classical leverage SV model is generalized based on a linear spline. In the new model the correlation between the return innovation and volatility innovation is dependent on the type of news arrived to the market. Theoretical properties of the proposed model are examined. A simulation-based maximum likelihood method is developed to estimate the new model. Simulations show that the estimation method provides reliable parameter estimates. The new model is fitted to daily and weekly data …

Academic Writing And The Pedagogical Practices Of Effective Teachers, Thomas Devere Wolsey Edd Jul 2008

Academic Writing And The Pedagogical Practices Of Effective Teachers, Thomas Devere Wolsey Edd

Dissertations

Composition, particularly when academic register is required, is a complex task. Because cognitive flexibility theory explains how humans can spontaneously restructure knowledge and adapt to situational demands, it is ideally suited to the ill-structured domain of transactional writing. Global aspects related to paragraph and whole-text structure and local operations related to word and sentence-level features define academic writing. A mixed-methods design used quantitative methods for investigation of five corpora of 10th grade students' work. Qualitative methods were used to explore the means teachers used in promoting academic writing and the interactions they intended to promote via teaching cues, including prompts. …

Numerical Analysis Of Non-Constant Pure Rate Of Time Preference: A Model Of Climate Policy, Tomoki Fujii, Larry Karp Jul 2008

Numerical Analysis Of Non-Constant Pure Rate Of Time Preference: A Model Of Climate Policy, Tomoki Fujii, Larry Karp

Research Collection School Of Economics

When current decisions affect welfare in the far-distant future, as with climate change, the use of a declining pure rate of time preference (PRTP) provides potentially important modeling flexibility. The difficulty of analyzing models with non-constant PRTP limits their application. We describe and provide software (available online) to implement an algorithm to numerically obtain a Markov perfect equilibrium for an optimal control problem with non-constant PRTP. We apply this software to a simplified version of the numerical climate change model used in the Stern Review. For our calibration, the policy recommendations are less sensitive to the PRTP than widely believed. …

Genetic Engineering In Agriculture: New Approaches For Risk Management Through Sustainability Reporting, Philip J. Vergragt, Halina Szejnwald Brown Jul 2008

Genetic Engineering In Agriculture: New Approaches For Risk Management Through Sustainability Reporting, Philip J. Vergragt, Halina Szejnwald Brown

Sustainability and Social Justice

Genetically modified crops and foodstuff have been highly controversial for environmental, health, and ethical reasons. The controversies have been worldwide, but most prominent in the European Union, for reasons that include distrust of the regulatory authorities, scientists and technocratic decision making. An informal moratorium in the EU came recently to an end, without solving the underlying problems. In response to the criticisms, the European governments have attempted to improve the risk assessment methods and their scientific basis, and to tailor public policies to the growing demand for transparency, accountability, and public participation. This paper proposes a novel approach to including …

The Constitutive Paradox Of Modern Law: A Comment On Tully, Ruth Buchanan Jul 2008

The Constitutive Paradox Of Modern Law: A Comment On Tully, Ruth Buchanan

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

This commentary draws out and elaborates upon some of the more challenging aspects of Professor Tully's sophisticated taxonomy of the relationship between modern constitutional forms and constituent powers. Tully's article reveals the historical particularities of these formations, and at the same time encourages the reader to think beyond them, towards the potentially uncategorizable realm of democratic constitutionalism. Yet, how is it possible to use a taxonomy of modern constitutional democracy as a means of understanding what ties in the uncharted territory beyond? This commentary further explores to what extent this paradoxical modern configuration of constituent powers and constitutional forms may …

Converged Service Of Data, Video And Voice – Readiness Of Pakistani Market, Syed Irfan Nabi, Danish Abrar, Karim Chagani, Adnan Anwar Khan, Anwar Ul Haq

Business Review

This paper reports selective results of the study to explore the acceptability and readiness of consumers to switch from existing separate date, voice and video services to a single converged service over a fixed line. Providing a converged service requires effort in three areas i.e. convergence supporting technology, converged (unified) service offering and development of access devices. This study is only about a converged service offering. Market for Cable TV service in Pakistan is more established and mature as compared to that of Internet. Research question of this study was that ‘broadband alone may not be able to create a …

On Profiling Blogs With Representative Entries, Jinfeng Zhuang, Steven C. H. Hoi, Aixin Sun

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

With an explosive growth of blogs, information seeking in blogosphere becomes more and more challenging. One example task is to find the most relevant topical blogs against a given query or an existing blog. Such a task requires concise representation of blogs for effective and efficient searching and matching. In this paper, we investigate a new problem of profiling a blog by choosing a set of m most representative entries from the blog, where m is a predefined number that is application-dependent. With the set of selected representative entries, applications on blogs avoid handling hundreds or even thousands of entries …

Directed Forgetting Of Live Motion Events: An Investigation Of A New Stimulus Set, Shawn Dickerson Jul 2008

Directed Forgetting Of Live Motion Events: An Investigation Of A New Stimulus Set, Shawn Dickerson

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

Instructions to forget presented information are often given and it is necessary to further understand how those involved can be affected by what is called "directed forgetting". The purpose of the current study was to investigate if a video stimuli would produce directed forgetting using the list method and a recognition style test. In addition, viewing live motion events has been suggested to be a more relevant modality to examine directed forgetting and thus another purpose of the current study was to utilize video stimuli to create a more valid assessment of this phenomenon. Participants (N=181) were selected through the …

Gender Differences In The Romantic Commitment Of Swingers: A Quantitative And Qualitative Analysis, Rachel A. Vedder Jul 2008

Gender Differences In The Romantic Commitment Of Swingers: A Quantitative And Qualitative Analysis, Rachel A. Vedder

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

This research examined whether gender differences in romantic commitment among a swing population are mediated by sexual permissiveness. This study also served as an update to past literature and further exploration into swing culture by using qualitative data„such as examining reasons for entering and leaving swinging, level of involvement in the lifestyle, and safe sex practices. Researchers have found significant correlations between gender and commitment (Cupach & Meets, 1995; Duffy & Rusbult,1985-1986), gender and sexual permissiveness (Hong,1991; LaBeff & Dodder, 1982; Oliver & Hyde, 1993), and sexual permissiveness and commitment (Oliver & Sedikides, 1992; Yela, 2000). However, the role that …

The Relationship Between Valuing Diversity And Implicit Racial Bias: A Construct Validation Study, Rebekka Althouse Gordon Jul 2008

The Relationship Between Valuing Diversity And Implicit Racial Bias: A Construct Validation Study, Rebekka Althouse Gordon

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

Two studies examined the construct validity of valuing diversity in relation to both explicit and implicit racial bias. In the first study, participants completed three measures: the Miville-Guzman Universality-Diversity Scale to measure valuing diversity; the Implicit Association Test to assess implicit racial bias; and the Symbolic Racism 2000 Scale to assess explicit racial bias. Results indicated there was a significant relationship between the valuing diversity and implicit racial bias measures as well as between the valuing diversity and explicit racial bias measures. The explicit and implicit racial bias measures accounted for unique variance in the valuing diversity construct. There was …

The Nature Of K-12 Teacher Need Through 2050: A Demographic Investigation Of The Teacher Shortage Crisis In The United States, Rebecca M. Mullen

Sociology & Criminal Justice Theses & Dissertations

In this paper, I outlined research regarding a so-called "crisis" in K-12 education in the United States, which refers to an alleged shortage of teachers that is manifesting and will continue to manifest itself in the near future. I then used a modified version of the cohort component analysis to project the number of teachers needed to project the number of a) students who will be enrolled in public or private K-12 education in the united states, b) teachers needed to maintain the student to teacher ratio in the United States as of the year 2000, 16.0, by benchmark year …

The Relationships Among Religiosity Spirituality Sexual Attitudes Sexual Permissiveness And Sexual Behavior In A College Population, Brandi Colter Jul 2008

The Relationships Among Religiosity Spirituality Sexual Attitudes Sexual Permissiveness And Sexual Behavior In A College Population, Brandi Colter

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

This research examined the relationships among religiosity, spirituality, sexual attitudes, and the sexual behavior of college students. Research has shown correlations among religiosity, spirituality and sexual attitudes (e.g., Chilman, 1983; Werner-Wilson & Jay, 1998; Zelnik & Shah, 1981), religiosity, spirituality and sexual behavior (e.g. Scott, Munson, McMillen, & Ollie, 2006; Thornton & Cambum, 1989), and among sexual attitudes and sexual behavior (e.g. Buss & Barnes, 1986; Hendrick et al., 1985). However, the role that sexual attitudes may play as a mediator between the constructs ofreligiosity, spirituality, and sexual behaviors had yet to be examined. Fishbein and Ajzen's (1980) theory of …

This paper reports on the lessons learned from a project designed to connect local small-scale farmers with low-income households in the Piedmont Region of central North Carolina. Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) arrangements were used to assist farmers by prepaying for fresh farm products. Building community through alternative food systems and civic agriculture underlies the project design of this CSA project. Payments to farmers were made by North Carolina’s food policy council. Selected low-income households received CSA shares of farm fresh products. Results focus on access to local, farm fresh products, changes in cooking practices of the CSA participants, as well …

Boss Hu And The Press, Nicolai Volland Jun 2008

Boss Hu And The Press, Nicolai Volland

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

In early May, we published the first installment of our feature, “China Around the World.” We asked scholars, journalists, and graduate students working outside China and the US to reflect on Chinese media and coverage of China. This reflection on the implications of Hu Jintao’s recent visit to the People’s Dailynewsroom is from Nicolai Volland, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Chinese Studies at the National University of Singapore.

One June 20, Hu Jintao paid a high profile visit to the People’s Daily. His foray to the editorial offices of the CCP mouthpiece was first announced in the form …
