Children's Perspectives On Coping And Support Following Parental Separation, Ann Marie Halpenny, Sheila Greene, Diane Hogan Jul 2008

Children's Perspectives On Coping And Support Following Parental Separation, Ann Marie Halpenny, Sheila Greene, Diane Hogan

Articles

Increasingly, children experience ongoing change in family formation and structure and such fluctuation may threaten or diminish children’s feelings of security with regard to established family roles, relationships and routines. A number of studies have explored available support for children in the context of family transition, focusing in particular upon those organisations providing services to children and families. However, in order to gain more precise insight into the mechanisms through which children can best be supported, it is necessary to consult children themselves and to elicit their perspectives and responses to the changes in their family contexts. A primary aim …

Can Deliberative Democracy Work In Hierarchical Organizations?, Jason Pierce, Grant W. Neeley, Jeffrey Budziak Jul 2008

Can Deliberative Democracy Work In Hierarchical Organizations?, Jason Pierce, Grant W. Neeley, Jeffrey Budziak

Political Science Faculty Publications

Some measure of equality is necessary for deliberative democracy to work well, yet empirical scholarship consistently points to the deleterious effect that hierarchy and inequalities of epistemological authority have on deliberation. This article tests whether real-world deliberative forums can overcome these challenges. Contrary to skeptics, it concludes that the act of deliberation itself and the presence of trained moderators ameliorate inequalities of epistemological authority, thus rendering deliberative democracy possible, even within hierarchical organizations.

Immersive Learning Environments In Parallel Universes: Learning Through Second Life, Jeremy Kemp, Ken Haycock Jul 2008

Immersive Learning Environments In Parallel Universes: Learning Through Second Life, Jeremy Kemp, Ken Haycock

Academic Technology

Opportunities for more creative and innovative environments for learners continue to develop through distance education. Especially at the post-secondary level, these immersive environments can involve high-end video game technologies to create multi-user virtual worlds that can both replicate and far extend physical classrooms. At San Jose State University's School of Library and Information Science, courses offered in and through Second Life develop both competence and comfort in working with library users. Several useful lessons have also been learned.

Demographic Trends In New England At Mid-Decade, Kenneth M. Johnson Jul 2008

Demographic Trends In New England At Mid-Decade, Kenneth M. Johnson

Sociology

With 14.3 million residents, New England is home to just 5 percent of the U.S. population, yet it reflects many of the strands that comprise the country’s demographic fabric: densely settled urban cores, expanding suburbs, struggling industrial towns, fast-growing recreational and retirement amenity areas, and isolated rural villages. In recent years New England’s population grew thanks to immigration and more births than deaths, but there is a net outflow of existing residents. Therein lies the challenge for policymakers who want to keep the region vibrant and diverse. A closer look at the demographics may help.

Continuing Assessment Of Library Instruction To Undergraduates : A General Education Course Survey Research Project, Kate Zoellner, Sue Samson, Samantha Hines Jul 2008

Continuing Assessment Of Library Instruction To Undergraduates : A General Education Course Survey Research Project, Kate Zoellner, Sue Samson, Samantha Hines

Mansfield Library Faculty Publications

An assessment project was conducted by the Mansfield Library to evaluate the teaching and content of a research module embedded into a popular undergraduate course, Introduction to Public Speaking, part of the University of Montana’s General Education Requirement. The project aimed to develop internal benchmarks and improve the curricula, as needed. Pre- and post-surveys were developed to assess student research confidence, perceptions of information tools, Web evaluation abilities, and assistance-seeking attitudes. Data from 426 student responses were analyzed using qualitative and quantitative methods. The process, results, and analysis of the project are discussed.

Import Source Reallocation And Us Manufacturing Employment, 1972-2001, Roger White Jul 2008

Import Source Reallocation And Us Manufacturing Employment, 1972-2001, Roger White

Economics

Examining the US manufacturing sector, we focus on the potential employment effects of shifts in import sources from relatively high- to low-income nations. Data for 384 6-digit NAICS US manufacturing industries that span the years 1972–2001 are utilized. Increased import penetration is found to reduce both production and non-production employment; however, such job loss is countered by export-led job creation. Extending the literature, we report that reallocation of import sources from high- to low-income nations reduces manufacturing employment, and when shifts in import sources coincide with rising import penetration the result is an acceleration of job loss.

Sexual Orientation Wage Gap: The Role Of Occupational Sorting And Human Capital, Heather Antecol, Anneke Jong, Michael Steinberger Jul 2008

Sexual Orientation Wage Gap: The Role Of Occupational Sorting And Human Capital, Heather Antecol, Anneke Jong, Michael Steinberger

CMC Faculty Publications and Research

Using data from the 2000 U.S. Census, the authors explore two alternative explanations for the sexual orientation wage gap: occupational sorting, and human capital differences. They find that lesbian women earned more than heterosexual women irrespective of marital status, while gay men earned less than their married heterosexual counterparts but more than their cohabitating heterosexual counterparts. Results of a Oaxaca-Blinder decomposition indicate that the relative wage advantages observed for some groups of lesbians and gay men were mainly owing to greater levels of human capital accumulation (particularly education), while occupational sorting had little or no influence. The relative wage penalties …

Diversity As An Emerging Principle Of Internet Governance, Philip M. Napoli Jul 2008

Diversity As An Emerging Principle Of Internet Governance, Philip M. Napoli

McGannon Center Working Paper Series

This paper investigates the ongoing emergence of diversity as a guiding normative principle of Internet governance. This paper starts from the premise that principles play a fundamental role in the development and implementation of any regulatory regime, but that the communications policymaking process historically has suffered from ambiguous and sometimes contradictory conceptualizations of its guiding principles, and from such principles functioning more as rhetorical devices to be exploited by stakeholder groups rather than as analytical tools to be used by policymakers. This paper provides a comparative analysis of the conceptualization and application of the diversity principle in traditional mass media …

Collectivist Values For Productive Teamwork Between Korean And Chinese Employees, Yifeng Chen, Dean Tjosvold Jul 2008

Collectivist Values For Productive Teamwork Between Korean And Chinese Employees, Yifeng Chen, Dean Tjosvold

CAPS Working Paper Series

The global marketplace increasingly demands that cultural diverse people work together but studies have documented important barriers to inter-cultural collaboration. Researchers have argued the need to study intercultural interaction directly in order to develop knowledge that diverse people can use to overcome obstacles and work productively. This study proposes that collectivist values are a basis upon which Korean and Chinese colleagues working in joint ventures in China develop quality collegial relationships and thereby work productively together. Chinese employees completed measures of collectivist and individualist values in their relationships with a Korean colleague. The Korean partners completed measures of collegial relationships, …

Short Term Time Off: What We Know, Anna Danziger, Shelley Waters Boots Jul 2008

Short Term Time Off: What We Know, Anna Danziger, Shelley Waters Boots

Memos and Fact Sheets

Short Term Time Off (STO) refers to job-protected time away from the workplace to address anticipated or unexpected needs of limited duration. STO may be scheduled or unscheduled, depending on the underlying need. STO enables workers to address both the routine and emergency situations that occur in everyday life.

The need for STO may arise, for example, because a worker or worker’s child is sick or has a routine doctor’s appointment, because a worker has to wait for the plumber or apply for public benefits or go to court, or because a worker needs to attend a school conference or …
