Social And Environmental Risk Factors For Hypertension In African Americans Aug 2008

Social And Environmental Risk Factors For Hypertension In African Americans

Florida Public Health Review

This study tests the hypothesis that disparities of hypertension risk in African Americans is related to lead exposure, perceptions of racism, and stress, among urban (Roxbury, MA) and rural (Gadsden, FL) communities. Analysis of preliminary data from Phase I reveal 60% in Gadsden and 39% in Roxbury respondents self-reported having hypertension. In Gadsden 80% people did not know if their residence contained lead paint, compared to 45% in Roxbury. In Gadsden County, 58% of respondents reported experiencing racial discrimination in different settings compared with 72% in Roxbury. In regression analyses high cholesterol emerged as a significant predictors of hypertension in …

A sample of 351 students were given a questionnaire of 22 questions. Findings show that students find user education necessary and beneficial, and that students would like to see expert and professional librarians in the reference department.

"Do I Really Belong Here?" The Effects Of Difference In Paths Through Higher Education On Graduate Student Perception On Legitimacy, Tina Dawn Lillian Burdsall Aug 2008

"Do I Really Belong Here?" The Effects Of Difference In Paths Through Higher Education On Graduate Student Perception On Legitimacy, Tina Dawn Lillian Burdsall

Dissertations and Theses

Why do some master's level students feel confident in completing their programs and some do not? Why do some feel connected to their department and some do not? Why do some feel legitimate as graduate students and some do not? This research proposes that there may be differences in how master's students understand the graduate student role based on whether they went directly from high-school through their bachelor's to their master's, or if they took time off between their bachelor's and master's program. This thesis used in-depth interviews with twelve second-year master's students at Portland State University to explore these …

China Overload

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

What’s that, you ask? We couldn’t tell you. We can’t get enough of the China coverage splattered across magazine covers and op-ed pages. A lot of the stuff is for subscribers only, so we won’t be directing you to recent China pieces in Harper’s and elsewhere. Here are some links to the free pieces, found on the pages of the usual suspects as well as some unusual ones:

1. Here’s an unusual one: Architectural Digest has a series of stories on contemporary decor and architecture in China, including a photo spread of a “villa” outside Chengdu, a slideshow of 19th …

Re-Framing Assessment: A Patron-Centered Approach, Jeanne M. Brown Aug 2008

Re-Framing Assessment: A Patron-Centered Approach, Jeanne M. Brown

Library Faculty Presentations

The Strategic Plan is a standard blueprint guiding library assessment activities. Many, if not most, Strategic Plans are organized along library departmental lines and/or library functions, and use language with which librarians frame their efforts—not language with which patrons would necessarily resonate. In an effort to drive home the concept that it is “impact on the patron” which should be the touchstone for all we do, the UNLV Libraries Dean and Assessment Librarian have created a framework which turns the Strategic Plan document on its head, making it patron-centric. From six goals, the UNLV plan was revised to focus on …

Applying Experimental Economics To Obesity In The Family Household, Mariah D. Ehmke, Travis Warziniack, Christiane Schroeter, Kari Morgan Aug 2008

Applying Experimental Economics To Obesity In The Family Household, Mariah D. Ehmke, Travis Warziniack, Christiane Schroeter, Kari Morgan

Agribusiness

The objective of this study is to identify experimental economic tools that can be employed to explain the role of economic behavior in overweight and obesity in the household. We identify three economic experiments that can be used to understand how parent-child economic relationships relate to obesity. Loss aversion experiments are discussed as a tool to understand challenges some individuals face in achieving a healthy diet. Finally, testbed experiments are introduced as a means to test and understand new policies and incentives for better health at the household level.

Access Transformed: Building A Primary Care Workforce For The 21st Century, Sara J. Rosenbaum, Peter Shin

Health Policy and Management Faculty Publications

Though access to primary care protects health and cuts costs, this report shows there aren't enough primary care doctors and nurses at health centers to meet the need, with some areas having almost none – a situation that cannot be solved just by expanding health insurance coverage. The report indicates the availability of a primary care workforce depends on where you live, and primary care clinicians are not locating in areas that need them most, especially low-income communities. The study includes state-level projections of growing patient needs expected to stretch the health care system in years ahead. It was conducted …

Cultural Distance And The Us Immigrant-Trade Link, Roger White, Bedassa Tadesse Aug 2008

Cultural Distance And The Us Immigrant-Trade Link, Roger White, Bedassa Tadesse

Economics

Using data from the World and the European Values Surveys, we calculate cultural distances between the US and 54 immigrant home countries and examine the influences of cultural distance and immigrant populations on US imports from and exports to immigrants’ home countries during the years 1997–2004. Our study indicates that, for both US imports and exports, the trade‐enhancing effect of immigrants partially offsets the trade‐inhibiting effect of cultural distance. Further, decomposing our measure of cultural distance into two component dimensions and revisiting the immigrant–trade relationship, we find significant variation in the extent to which immigrants counter the trade‐inhibiting influences of …

In planning for the implementation of SMU’s Institutional Repository, we discovered significant developments on the international research and academic scene in the area of scholarly communication. The developments cover changes in the role of governments and libraries in the support of research, the development of institutional repositories as the medium for the dissemination of scholarly communication, emerging standards and protocols for knowledge harvesting, new copyright models and new perspectives on measuring and reporting research quality and output. To be recognized as a research institution of excellence in the academic world, the University needs to decide where it wants to be …

Social Interactions In Demand, Andrew Grodner, Thomas J. Kniesner Aug 2008

Social Interactions In Demand, Andrew Grodner, Thomas J. Kniesner

Economics - All Scholarship

We examine theoretically demand in a two-good economy where the demand of one good is influenced by either a spillover effect in the form of an externality from other consumers' choices and or a conformity effect representing a need for making similar choices as others. A positive spillover effect increases the demand for the good with interactions, and a conformity effect makes the demand curve pivot around the average market demand to make demand less price sensitive. The collateral implication is that spillover in consumption increases the associated derived demand for labor and conformity in consumption makes the associated derived …

From Multi-User Virtual Environment To 3d Virtual Learning Environment, Daniel Livingstone, Jeremy Kemp, Edmund Edgar

Academic Technology

While digital virtual worlds have been used in education for a number of years, advances in the capabilities and spread of technology have fed a recent boom in interest in massively multi-user 3D virtual worlds for entertainment, and this in turn has led to a surge of interest in their educational applications. In this paper we briefly review the use of virtual worlds for education, from informal learning to formal instruction, and consider what is required to turn a virtual world from a Multi-User Virtual Environment into a fully fledged 3D Virtual Learning Environment (VLE). In this we focus on …

Ten Years Of Community Profiles In New Hampshire, Charlie A. French, Fabienne Lord-Fonesca Aug 2008

Ten Years Of Community Profiles In New Hampshire, Charlie A. French, Fabienne Lord-Fonesca

Natural Resources & the Environment

Through a program called Community Profiles, the University of New Hampshire Cooperative Extension has helped 57 New Hampshire communities develop a vision for their future and mobilize local residents to act on that vision. The Community Profile process is based on the premise that communities must engage members in identifying and documenting common and deeply held values from which to craft a vision for the future if they are to build and sustain community vitality. The process also helps communities find new and creative ways to pursue that vision by leveraging resources within and outside of the community. These resources …
