Elementary School Teachers' Perceptions Of The Foster Care System And The Children In Its Care, Irja Carol. Peck

Elementary school teachers' perception of children in the foster care system and the foster care system was investigated. The perceptions were gathered by conducting a single individual 45 to 90 minute interview on 12 different teachers, who taught grades ranging from pre-kindergarten to the fifth grade. All teachers were identified as having a student that was currently in the foster care system during the previous or current academic year. Teachers studied reported an in-depth understanding of the challenges emotionally, socially, and academically that children in the foster care face. The 2008 UNLV Renewable Energy Symposium was presented by the Office of Strategic Energy Programs and co-sponsored by the Division of Research and Graduate Studies on August 20, 2008 on the UNLV campus.

The event focused on renewable energy production in Nevada, the US Southwest, and renewable research projects nationwide. It was a great opportunity for anyone working on renewable projects to collaborate with others in this field and exchange information. Over 230 individuals attended the event this year.

This qualitative study explored the impact of the media, advertising, and popular culture on the self esteem and body image of adolescent girls. This study aimed to understand the amount and to what extent girls were potentially negatively impacted by a variety of media sources. Twelve adolescent girls, ages sixteen to eighteen, were asked a series of questions regarding their thoughts, feelings, and experiences in dealing with the ways the media influences and impacts their lives. This exploratory study's purpose was to examine mental health providers' awareness of the intersecting and compounding internalized oppressions (racism, sexism and homophobia) of women who experience same-sex intimate partner violence. The research attempted to address the question: Are mental health providers aware of the internalized oppressions among women who are in same-sex relationships in which intimate partner violence occurs? A qualitative study was conducted using a semi-structured, self-designed interview guide with open-ended questions. The sample included a total of twelve mental health providers recruited using a non-probability, convenience method. The objective of this study was to explore how second generation Korean Americans negotiated separation and individuation during the life cycle phase of adolescence. This qualitative study, based on in-depth interview with 12 second generation Korean American adults, examined the participants' separation – individuation process during adolescence and currently. In addition, the project addressed the applicability of the Western concept of separation-individuation theory to Confucian based collectivistic cultures. This theoretical study is a declaration that speaking and acting from a place outside of opposition is powerful in creating a more racially just world. To explore this declaration, this thesis first reviews the language used in racial justice work today and the values that underlie this language. It then examines a different way of framing, one that seeks to come from a value system of acceptance of reality and working towards a more racially just world, rather than a value system rooted in opposition to reality and working against injustice. This thesis explored how transitional objects are utilized and interpreted in adult treatment. The definition of transitional object is open-ended consistent with D.W. Winnicott's assertions and Object Relations theory. Qualitative data was obtained by conducting in-depth interviews with three mental health professionals about specific patients and the course of treatment with a focus on emergent objects. Interview questions were open-ended and related to material that spontaneously arose. The first part of the thesis question related to how transitional objects are identified in adult treatment. Objects identified ranged from concrete to abstract. Therapists and patients identified the objects. Findings revealed that …

This study explored how an adult whose parent died during childhood understands their ongoing relationship with that parent and whether rituals or practices are integral to observing that ongoing relationship. Psychodynamic theory first examined the grieving process as a linear, time-limited experience. The field of grief and bereavement studies has become polarized around traditional psychodynamic theorists who have examined pathological bereavement and post-modern continuing bonds theorists whose focus is the nature of the ongoing relationship to the deceased. This study was conducted in order to examine the relationship between practicing social work clinicians' and students' attitudes toward racial concordance as a precursor to a positive therapeutic outcome, while exploring the possible predictors of such attitudes based on their background childhood experiences and their scores on the Multidimensional Inventory of Black Identity (MIBI). Sixty-eight subjects were used in the web based data collection process. Preliminary data concluded that most participants (89.6%) thought that racial concordance was an important factor in order to foster a positive therapeutic experience. Yet these same rivers and streams also sometimes provide valuable drinking water, both locally and in communities downstream in other states, especially in Kansas. The Olympics in Beijing has been a great disappointment. No one has collapsed into a coughing fit from the air pollution. This seemed a certainty from all the reports leading up to the opening of what are so quaintly termed “the games.” The American cyclists who arrived in the Beijing Airport wearing face masks seemed to have made it through the opening ceremonies without contracting “black lung” or suffering a terminal case of “ring around the collar.” I feel I have been let down yet again by the press.

Beyond Backlash: Assessing The Impact Of Judicial Decisions On Lgbt Rights, Thomas Keck

Political Science - All Scholarship

This article evaluates the widespread scholarly claim that the courtroom victories of the LGBT rights movement have invariably provoked a counterproductive political backlash. Those victories have indeed provoked conservative counter-mobilization, but that has not been their only or even their most prominent effect. Assessing the political reaction to the movement’s judicial victories, the policy impact of those victories, and the alternative strategic paths that were available to the movement at the outset, I argue that here, as elsewhere, legal mobilization has sometimes been a promising avenue for pursuing policy changes whose prospects were otherwise quite limited.

In debates about the welfare of animals, different people have tended to emphasize different concerns. Some emphasize the basic health and functioning of animals, especially freedom from disease and injury. Others emphasize the "affective states" of animals – states like pain, distress and pleasure that are experienced as positive or negative. Others emphasize the ability of animals to live reasonably natural lives by carrying out natural behaviour and having natural elements in their environment. This dissertation contains a detailed picture of the employment-based health insurance coverage in the past twenty years, and it provides new estimates of the effects of increased federal and state minimum wages on the coverage of low-wage workers by this type of health insurance. I use March Current Population Surveys collected from IPUMS, for 1988 to 2005. Previous studies have found no significant evidence that increased minimum wages reduce fringe benefit receipt (Beeson Royalty 2000; Simon and Kaestner 2003). In contrast to these studies, I use a difference-in-difference approach and I define treatment groups as being individuals in the lowest …

The current study was undertaken to better understand what resources individuals use in work and family domains that allow them to balance work and family responsibilities and the outcomes associates with these resources. Hospital employees of a metropolitan area hospital (N = 174) completed surveys at two time periods (4 months separation) on perceptions of resources in work and family domains, as well as organizational, family, and well-being outcomes.
