Public Libraries 'Just Buggy' For 2008 Summer Reading Program

The article presents information on the highlights of the 2008 Summer Reading Program, entitled "Catch the Reading Bug," for public libraries in Georgia. The objective of the Worth County Library System (WCLS) is to increase the participation of teenagers. The Houston County Public Library System (HOUPL) has added teenagers as a new component to its Summer Reading Program. Information is given on the reading programs of the Southwest Georgia Regional Library system.

The public library system has presented two multicultural programs to stimulate interest in cultural diversity, the Olympics and sportsmanship. Its objective of the program is to encourage students to read. The library's other Olympics-themed event was the premiere of its new virtual travel program.

Eduardo was born in a town (rancho) called Ojos de Agua, located within the Greater México City urban area, in 1920. From the age of five, Eduardo worked with him father, brothers and uncles sowing and plowing in México. When he was 16, he moved to México City. In 1943 after hearing about the Bracero Program in a national ad, Eduardo took a chance to make more money and have a better opportunity through the program. Lampreys were and continue to be an important resource for Native Americans in the Pacific Northwest. Lampreys possess several skeletal structures that are regularly identified in marine mammal and bird stomach contents and fecal samples, suggesting that lamprey elements may preserve in archaeological contexts. However, their remains have not been identified in archaeological faunal samples in the Pacific Northwest. This may be due to the lack of an adequate "search image" for lamprey remains among faunal analysts and limited use of line screen sampling. Descriptions and photographs of lamprey remains that are most likely to survive in archaeological contexts are …

Dragon listens to your voice and records your composition faster than you can type. After a brief, 15-minute training and tutorial session, during which Dragon listens to the user and he or she learns commands to navigate within Dragon, you are ready to start using the program.

This assessment reveals food system sustainability trends in Oregon and Washington, focusing specifically on the producers in both states and the consumers in the Portland- Vancouver region. We began the assessment by asking a group of food system stakeholders from Oregon and Washington to define broadly supported goals for a sustainable food system. They also helped us identify the data necessary to understand trends in the food system. This information can be used in the future to establish benchmarks and to assess future progress toward food system sustainability goals. The authors of this article analyzed the differences in output when searching MEDLINE direct and MEDLINE via citation management software, EndNoteX1^®, EndNoteWeb^®, and RefWorks. Several searches were performed on Ovid MEDLINE and PubMed directly. These searches were compared against the same searches conducted in Ovid MEDLINE and PubMed using the search features in EndNote X1, EndNote Web, and RefWorks. Findings indicated that for in-depth research, users should search the databases directly rather than through the citation management software interface. The search results indicated it would be appropriate to search databases via citation management software for citation …

Machine readable files of the complete corpus of recognized American Indian treaties, derived from Charles Kappler’s multi-volume Indian Affairs: Laws and Treaties and a few additional sources, were obtained from the Oklahoma State University Library Electronic Publishing Center and converted for text analysis with TokenX, a web application developed at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln's Center for Digital Research in the Humanities. The analysis and visualization capabilities of TokenX reveal the diversity of the terms found in these 375 treaties, and the observed frequencies offer a prospect upon legal thought of the times and upon the vocabulary used to express the …

For nine months, a team of UNL student journalists — six print and four broadcasting — went looking for the answers to these questions. The students read hundreds of pages of background material, interviewed scores of scientists, researchers, professors and energy experts by phone and e-mail, grilled a number of ethanol advocates in person, participated in an energy symposium at Stanford University, traveled to Berkeley, Chicago and Kansas City, and visited ethanol plants, rural communities and cattle country to try to get to the bottom of this elusive, complex issue. This data note focuses on employment outcomes for individuals served by the One-Stop system through the Workforce Investment Act (WIA) Adult funding stream. Outcomes data include the rate of WIA customers entering employment and their employment retention rate. This data note compares outcomes among adults with reported disabilities to those without reported disabilities.

The decline in the number of face-to-face reference transactions has implications that are of concern to librarians, as well as the faculty and students we serve. A strategy to address this is to take reference to locations that are “more convenient” for users – locations where they already work, study and gather.

Three reference librarians shared their experiences with offering services in non-library settings, such as a faculty office building, a computer lab in a classroom, a student lounge, and a departmental library room. Wayne State University’s Office for Teaching and Learning (OTL) co-hosted an all-day symposium called Virtual Citizenship. This symposium was part of an ongoing, multi-faceted study of the intersection between information technologies and the practice of citizenship. The OTL, with the help of the New Media Consortium, was able to provide the resources and technical knowledge needed to produce this forum while showcasing new technologies.
