Models Of Rural Transportation For People With Disabilities, Tom Seekins Ph.D., University Of Montana Rural Institute Feb 2007

Models Of Rural Transportation For People With Disabilities, Tom Seekins Ph.D., University Of Montana Rural Institute

Independent Living and Community Participation

The most recent Transportation Act, the “Safe, Accountable, Efficient, Flexible Transportation Equity Act: A Legacy for Users” (SAFETEA-LU), was signed into law in 2005. It guides transportation policy and funding through 2009, and provides opportunities to demonstrate innovative transportation solutions for people with disabilities living in rural areas. Section 5317, the “New Freedom Program”, allocates $78 million to states for demonstration projects that “go beyond the Americans with Disabilities Act.” That is, transportation providers cannot use these funds to meet their existing ADA obligations. Section 5311c allocates funding for transportation on Indian reservations. As providers begin to develop new programs …

Factors Influencing Baseball Fans' Brand Loyalty: A Comparison Of Florida Marlins And Tampa Bay Devil Rays, Yun-Tsan Lin

Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios

Factors influencing Major League Baseball fans' brand loyalty is important because these fans bring significant financial benefits to the industry every year, and stimulate economic growth in the United States. An intercept and quota sampling plan resulted in a sample of 285 Florida Marlins fans and 213 Tampa Bay Devil Rays fans for this comparative and correlational study. The purpose was to test for an explanatory relationship among fans' characteristics, influencing factors, and the loyalty of fans to a winning team and to a losing team. Comparative and multiple regression analyses tested hypothesized relationships among fan characteristics, brand association attributes, …

Evidence For Universality In Phenomenological Emotion Response System Coherence, David Matsumoto, John B. Nezlek, Birgit Koopmann-Holm Feb 2007

Evidence For Universality In Phenomenological Emotion Response System Coherence, David Matsumoto, John B. Nezlek, Birgit Koopmann-Holm

Psychology

The authors reanalyzed data from Scherer and Wallbott's (Scherer, 1997b; Scherer & Wallbott, 1994) International Study of Emotion Antecedents and Reactions to examine how phenomenological reports of emotional experience, expression, and physiological sensations were related to each other within cultures and to determine if these relationships were moderated by cultural differences, which were operationally defined using Hofstede's (2001) typology. Multilevel random coefficient modeling analyses produced several findings of note. First, the vast majority of the variance in ratings was within countries (i.e., at the individual level); a much smaller proportion of the total variance was between countries. Second, there were …

Presidential And Congressional Vote-Share Equations, Ray C. Fair Feb 2007

Presidential And Congressional Vote-Share Equations, Ray C. Fair

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

Three vote-share equations are estimated and analyzed in this paper, one for presidential elections, one for on-term House elections, and one for mid-term House elections. The sample period is 1916-2006. Considering the three equations together allows one to test whether the same economic variables affect each and to examine various serial correlation and coattail possibilities. The resulting three equation model can then be analyzed dynamically, which is done in Section 4. The main conclusions are briefly: 1) There is strong evidence that the economy affects all three vote shares and in remarkably similar ways. 2) There is no evidence of …

Models: New Interpretations Of Old Results, Ricardo J. Caballero, Eduardo Engel Feb 2007

Models: New Interpretations Of Old Results, Ricardo J. Caballero, Eduardo Engel

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

What is the relation between infrequent price adjustment and the dynamic response of the aggregate price level to monetary shocks? The answer to this question ranges from a one-to-one link (Calvo, 1983) to no connection whatsoever (Caplin and Spulber, 1987). The purpose of this paper is to provide a unified framework to understand the mechanisms behind this wide range of results. In doing so, we propose new interpretations of key results in this area, which in turn suggest the kind of Ss model that is likely to generate substantial price rigidity. The first result we revisit is Caplin and Spulber’s …

Price Dynamics On A Stock Market With Asymmetric Information, Bernard De Meyer Feb 2007

Price Dynamics On A Stock Market With Asymmetric Information, Bernard De Meyer

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

The appearance of a Brownian term in the price dynamics on a stock market was interpreted in [De Meyer, Moussa-Saley (2003)] as a consequence of the informational asymmetries between agents. To take benefit of their private information without revealing it to fast, the informed agents have to introduce a noise on their actions, and all these noises introduced in the day after day transactions for strategic reasons will aggregate in a Brownian Motion. We prove in the present paper that this kind of argument leads not only to the appearance of the Brownian motion, but it also narrows the class …

Hearing Handicap Among Adult Residents Of An Urban Homeless Shelter, Patricia A. Saccone, James R. Steiger Feb 2007

Hearing Handicap Among Adult Residents Of An Urban Homeless Shelter, Patricia A. Saccone, James R. Steiger

School of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology

This retrospective study was undertaken to identify the prevalence of hearing loss in the homeless population and its implications for vocational rehabilitation. Audiometric threshold data for adult residents of an urban homeless shelter were collected and reported. Subjects with hearing loss were identified and defined by their binaural high-frequency pure tone average (B-HFPTA). Those subjects were assigned a predicted Hearing Handicap Inventory for Adults-Screener (HHIA-S) score. Their HHIA-S scores, in turn, were used to predict hearing handicap and hearing aid candidacy. Significant hearing handicap was predicted for 35.6% of subjects; 10.6% were identified as hearing aid candidates. These findings have …

The Social Construction Of Authorship: An Investigation Of Subjectivity And Rhetorical Authority In The College Writing Classroom, Johannah Rodgers Feb 2007

The Social Construction Of Authorship: An Investigation Of Subjectivity And Rhetorical Authority In The College Writing Classroom, Johannah Rodgers

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Although we use the term author on a daily basis to refer to certain individuals, bodies of work, and systems of ideas, as Michel Foucault and other critics have pointed out, attempting to answer the question “What is an Author?” is by no means a simple proposition. And, starting from the position that there is no single, or definitive answer to this complex question, this dissertation seeks to contribute to the ongoing discussion of the genealogy of authorship by investigating the ways in which conceptions of the author have informed models of the writing subject in the field of rhetoric …

Strengthening The Scientific Foundations Of Professional Psychology: Time For The Next Steps, Timothy Melchert Feb 2007

Strengthening The Scientific Foundations Of Professional Psychology: Time For The Next Steps, Timothy Melchert

College of Education Faculty Research and Publications

The field of professional psychology has been tremendously successful, although it has also been characterized by many competing preparadigmatic theoretical orientations, which have led to a great deal of contention as well as conflicting views regarding psychological development, functioning, and behavior change. There is now widespread agreement regarding scientific explanations of many psychological processes, however, and, consequently, it is time to update the basic conceptual frameworks used for professional psychology education and practice. Replacing the traditional reliance on an array of theoretical orientations with a science-based biopsychosocial framework would resolve many of the contradictions and conflicts that characterized the preparadigmatic …

Protocol For Investigating Displacement Effects Of Wind Facilities On Grassland Songbirds, Wallace Erickson, Dale Strickland, Jill A. Shaffer, Douglas H. Johnson Feb 2007

Protocol For Investigating Displacement Effects Of Wind Facilities On Grassland Songbirds, Wallace Erickson, Dale Strickland, Jill A. Shaffer, Douglas H. Johnson

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

Populations of grassland and shrub-steppe bird species are declining more precipitously than any other group of North American bird species (Peterjohn and Sauer 1999). Much of the decline appears associated with habitat loss, fragmentation, and degradation of grassland and shrub-steppe habitats. Agricultural development is the greatest cause of grassland loss (Knopf 1994). Urban development and range management practices also contribute to loss of grasslands and biodiversity within remaining grasslands (Vickery et al. 1999, Fuhlendorf and Engle 2001). Because of the permanence and fragmenting nature of urban development, this form of grassland conversion may have more severe and longer-term negative effects …

Innovative Approaches To Cohort Retention In A Community-Based Hiv/Sti Prevention Trial For Socially Marginalized Peruvian Young Adults, Victoria Villacorta, Susan Kegeles, Jerome T. Galea, Kelika A. Konda, José P. Cuba, Carlos F. Cáceres Palacios, Thomas J. Coates

Social Work Faculty Publications

Background The conduct of longitudinal clinical trials must involve effective strategies to retain study participants in order to ensure internal validity, adequate statistical power and generalizability of results.

Purpose In a large trial in Peru, we implemented various retention strategies to maintain high participation rates over time.

Methods Novel participant retention strategies were used to follow highly marginalized populations for two years because traditional locator information, such as telephone numbers and official identification (eg, passport, driver's license, the local equivalent of a social security number) were often unreliable or unavailable. These strategies included detailed preliminary ethnographic research to identify the …

Linking Community Service, Learning, And Enviromental Analytical Chemistry, Joesph A. Gardella Jr., Tammy M. Milillo, Gaurav Sinha, Gunwah Oh, David C. Manns, Eleanor Coffey

Higher Education

In 1994, during a tour of the then-new natural sciences building- a $43 million teaching and research complex fully equipped with the latest in technology and instrumentation for chemistry and geology courses-a member of the Buffalo Public Schools Board of Education asked, "How can the community [that paid for it] have access to this teaching and research equipment?" That question triggered the effort reported here - a program to better link teaching and research to community service.

Junction City School District: Enrollment Forecasts, 2007-08 To 2011-12, Portland State University. Population Research Center, Charles Rynerson, Vivian Siu

School District Enrollment Forecast Reports

After a period of sustained enrollment growth from the late 1980s through the 1997-98 school year, total enrollment in the Junction City School District (JCSD) has fallen in eight of the past nine years. During the period, all schools have lost enrollment, and the K-12 total has decreased by 248 students, from 2,083 in 1997-98 to 1,835 in 2006-07. This report presents Enrollment Forecasts prepared by the Portland State University Population Research Center (PRC) exploring three possible scenarios for JCSD enrollment during the next five years, each with a unique assumption about the pace of expected housing development.

Empathy In Psychology Interns And Medical Residents: An Investigation Of The Cognitive And Emotional Components Of Empathy, Sarah Sherrard

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

Empathy has been recognized by both the mental health and medical fields as a central component of relationships between patients and treatment providers. Empathy of care providers has important implications for treatment outcomes of both medical and psychological conditions. Since it is becoming more common for mental health issues to be addressed primarily by primary care physicians, it is important to consider how physicians and psychologists compare on levels of empathy. The present study was an investigation of how medical residents and psychology interns compare on both cognitive and affective components of empathy. The Interpersonal Reactivity Index, designed to measure …
