Ugc-Infonet: E-Journals Consortium And Indian Academics: The Right Initiative At The Right Time, Suresh Chauhan, Prem Chand
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Abstract: UGC: Infonet: E-Journals Consortium is the one amongst the foremost programmes launched by University Grants Commission (UGC), India for the free flow of scholarly information between the Indian universities. It is a new phase for the higher educational system of the country in which peer-reviewed literature from all across the world is being given to the academic and research community. The programme is fully funded by UGC and being monitored and executed by Information and Library Network (INFLIBNET) Centre. INFLIBNET has taken various steps to make exhaustive and comprehensive usage of provided e-resources, by the member universities. The Centre …

No Longer The Sacred Cow – No Longer A Desk: Transforming Reference Service To Meet 21st Century User Needs, Gabriela Sonntag, Felicia Palsson
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
The reference desk is no longer an essential component of the work of academic librarians. Instruction programs are becoming stronger and more pervasive; librarians are increasing their contact with students and faculty in course-related interactions. We recognize that Google has become the primary resource for quick reference answers with students, faculty and with librarians. Students are indeed becoming more independent, as evidenced by declining reference statistics across the nation. But how are students' research needs met? Are we abandoning them altogether? At the California State University San Marcos, reference services with strong ties to the Information Literacy Program incorporate technology …

A lot of this may seem like basic information that we all know but, Google changes features continually and it is often hard to keep up. When I last counted the Google services listed under More Google and under “Labs” I came up with seventy different products or services with fifty-two of those products being search related. How many of these are we really familiar with let alone their individual operators and capabilities? In their book Google Hacks Bausch, Calishain, Dornfest list hack #1 as being aware of and using the Google directory, #2 is Google Zeitgeist, #4 is the …
La Crosse, The River, Denial: A College Town Struggles To Frame Responsibility For River Drowning Deaths, Douglas J. Swanson
La Crosse, The River, Denial: A College Town Struggles To Frame Responsibility For River Drowning Deaths, Douglas J. Swanson
Journalism
Twenty-four college-aged men have drowned in the Mississippi River near La Crosse, Wisconsin, since 1974. Six of the deaths occurred between 1997 and 2004; the most recent death was in 2006. Some community members contend the deaths are tragic and unrelated. Others argue the collective set of circumstances points to a series of murders committed by a mysterious “River Killer” that local authorities are unable or unwilling to bring to justice. This research, conducted within the theoretical perspective of media framing, involves a content analysis of local news newspaper narratives referencing the 2004 drowning and/ or earlier deaths. The analysis …
Kidnap Or Molest A Child, Go To Jail Forever; Kill A Child, Face Execution!, Gil Villagran
Kidnap Or Molest A Child, Go To Jail Forever; Kill A Child, Face Execution!, Gil Villagran
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
The Missouri kidnapping of Shawn Hornbeck, an eleven-year-old at the time of his abduction in 2002, and the subsequent kidnapping of Ben Ownby, age 13, one month ago by the same 41-year-old abductor must alert us all to the harsh reality of child abduction, child molest, and child murder. While most children live safely in their homes with their loving families, too many children do not reach adulthood without traumatic abuse and its lifelong consequences.

Wanita M. Scroggs, an attorney admitted to the Florida Bar and librarian at Stetson University College of Law, donated this book of writs of capias (book of arrest warrants) to the Poynter Library. Many of the warrants were issued for courts in Jacksonville and Ocala in the early 1890s. Among the witnesses and issuers of warrants was E[verett] E. Johns, who later perished in the line of duty on December 6, 1905 from a gunshot wound near Fernandina while serving as a chief deputy in Nassau County. Johns had previously served as sheriff of Bradford County. His sons—Everett Markley and …
