Public Reporting Of Fed Cattle Grid Prices: Policy Reform Consequences, Scott Fausti, Bashir Qasmi, Matthew Diersen Apr 2007

Public Reporting Of Fed Cattle Grid Prices: Policy Reform Consequences, Scott Fausti, Bashir Qasmi, Matthew Diersen

Economics Staff Paper Series (1969 - 2017)

Mandatory livestock price reporting was implemented in April 2001. Empirical evidence indicates a significant change in volatility occurred in publicly reported fed cattle grid premiums and discounts after its implementation. Empirical analysis of grid premiums and discounts across the pre-and post-reform periods indicates that increased transparency is compatible with either an increase or a decrease in price volatility in the post-MPR period. Furthermore, it appears that the public price reporting system for weekly grid premiums and discounts failed to provide an adequate level of transparency prior to the implementation of price reporting reforms. Our methodology extends the literature on the …

The Economics Of Water Utilization: Tools And Applications, Matt Bogard Apr 2007

The Economics Of Water Utilization: Tools And Applications, Matt Bogard

Agriculture Department Seminar Series

Given worldwide problems of access to safe potable water, this presentation examines how tools of economics can aid in drafting appropriate mitigating policies. Utilizing partial equilibrium analysis, it demonstrates the role that prices play in social coordination and then applies the framework to real world examples. In addition it examines Pigouvian Taxation and Coasean Bargaining as two classic methods for dealing with externalities in the context of water pollution. Second-best solutions such as tradable permits and metered pricing by public utilities are discussed. This presentation concludes by examining the issues and challenges that policy makers face when trying to implement …

Libraries 101 For International Students, Adriana Popescu Apr 2007

Libraries 101 For International Students, Adriana Popescu

Library Scholarship

Academic libraries have been increasingly active in developing programs and services which allow their educational mission to address the needs of an increasingly more diverse student population. In addition to the pressures of adjusting to a new environment and to the educational demands of a new school, international students must also adjust to an extensive and sometimes overwhelming library system, which can be quite different from what they are used to. The organizational structure of libraries, their services, collections, even their role and mission can differ from a country to another, thus turning libraries into intimidating places, which can keep …

Triangulating Social Capital Measurement For Turnover Research: Applications To The U.S. Military, Frederic W. Lunas Apr 2007

Triangulating Social Capital Measurement For Turnover Research: Applications To The U.S. Military, Frederic W. Lunas

Theses and Dissertations

In the United States, and around the world, social capital is becoming an intriguing new focus for slowing the declining sense of community and community trust. This strengthening focus on social capital in empirical study has great potential for an important role in U.S. public policy, as policy changes focused on increasing social capital may decrease turnover.
Yet, according to researchers, not enough sufficiently tested empirical measures of social capital exist. Combining several existing measures should provide a theoretically informed measurement of social capital for turnover research with application to the U.S. Military. Within this context, this thesis incorporated survey …

Interlocal Cooperation In The Supply Of Local Public Goods: A Transaction Cost And Social Exchange Explanation, Manoj Shrestha, Richard Feiock Apr 2007

Interlocal Cooperation In The Supply Of Local Public Goods: A Transaction Cost And Social Exchange Explanation, Manoj Shrestha, Richard Feiock

Working Group on Interlocal Services Cooperation

Although a multiplicity of local governments is often regarded as promoting efficiency in the supply of public services, political fragmentation can generate economies of scale and externality problems. Several exogenous solutions, including the creation of overlapping districts governments, consolidation of existing units and establishment of a metropolitan government, or direct state or federal intervention, have been offered. We argue that cooperative governance offers a potential endogenous solution to this dilemma. By combining transaction cost and social exchange theories within the institutional collective action framework, we investigate how local governments themselves address inefficiencies from externalities and economies of scale. An empirical …

Preparing Students For Lives Of Responsible Citizenship: A Higher Education Civic Blueprint For The State Of New Jersey, Andrew P. Frederick Apr 2007

Preparing Students For Lives Of Responsible Citizenship: A Higher Education Civic Blueprint For The State Of New Jersey, Andrew P. Frederick

Thesis, Dissertations, Student Creative Activity, and Scholarship

This thesis develops a working civic education blueprint for New Jersey's public colleges and universities and proposes concrete steps the State, particularly the governor and the Commission on Higher Education, can take to support their efforts. Civic education must be strategically integrated into the campus culture, the co-curriculum, and most importantly, the curriculum of higher education institutions hope to foster an ethic of service that diffuses across campus and reaches all students. Two overriding objectives should guide higher education in its civic mission: 1) providing students with multiple pathways, both curricular and co-curricular, that support their development as citizens across …

Hog Profitability, Al Prosch Apr 2007

Hog Profitability, Al Prosch

Cornhusker Economics

Pork producers have enjoyed several years of profitable production. In 2002 we began keeping data on estimated breakeven cost and potential profits. Our data is based on an updated production budget for an efficient 1,200 sow farrow to finish unit. Corn and soybean meal costs are taken from the Chicago Board of Trade futures prices, to stay current with changing feed costs. For Nebraska feed costs, soybean meal is valued at the current board price and corn is valued at the board price plus a negative 30 cent basis.
