Implementing A Critically Quasi-Ethnographic Approach, Lisa Murtagh
Implementing A Critically Quasi-Ethnographic Approach, Lisa Murtagh
The Qualitative Report
This paper provides an account of the methodological approach of a study designed to address some fundamental questions relating to formative assessment. The paper reports on the use of a critically quasi- ethnographic approach and describes the practicalities of adopting such an approach. The validity of the study is also considered , reflecting on Tricoglus’ (2001) protocol for practitioner research in education.

Sampling Designs In Qualitative Research: Making The Sampling Process More Public, Anthony J. Onwuegbuzie, Nancy L. Leech
The Qualitative Report
The purpose of this paper is to provide a typology of sampling designs for qualitative researchers. We introduce the following sampling strategies: (a) parallel sampling designs, which represent a body of sampling strategies that facilitate credible comparisons of two or more different subgroups that are extracted from the same levels of study; (b) nested sampling designs, which are sampling strategies that facilitate credible comparisons of two or more members of the same subgroup, wherein one or more members of the subgroup represent a sub-sample of the full sample; and (c) multilevel sampling designs, which represent sampling strategies that facilitate credible …
The Rebirth Of Comparative Literature In Anglocalization, Anand Patil
The Rebirth Of Comparative Literature In Anglocalization, Anand Patil
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
Anand Patil examines in his paper, "The Rebirth of Comparative Literature in Anglocalization," the debates on effects of "globalization" on literary studies and "cultures" in India. The focus of his comparative scrutiny follows the debate about the "death" of comparative literature. Patil re-imagines the rebirth of interdisciplinarity, a basic tenet of the discipline of comparative literature and a characteristic of globalization. He has coined the term "Anglocalization" to analyze the complexity of the effects of globalization in the multilingual and multicultural situation of the sub-continent. The term is used to describe a tripartite process: Anglicization by global English, economic liberation, …

Geopolitics Or Human Rights?, Judith Blau
Geopolitics Or Human Rights?, Judith Blau
Human Rights & Human Welfare
George Soros’ article, “On Israel, America and AIPAC” serves as a sobering reminder that the human rights revolution is constantly being scuttled by geopolitics that not only sideline human rights, but more devastatingly undermine their premises. I happen to agree with him that the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) is a major obstacle to the U.S. normalizing relations with any country in the Middle East, including and especially Israel. AIPAC is something of a misnomer because it is a coalition, not a committee, and some of its key members include neo-cons, as Soros mentions, as well as Christian evangelicals. …

Should Supporters Of Israel Embrace An "Open Society"?, Harry Kreisler
Human Rights & Human Welfare
Organizations, such as lobbies, must adapt to changes in their environment or they risk mission failure and possible extinction. Adaptation requires new ideas, new constituencies, and rigorous self-analysis. A vigorous internal debate raises the possibility of corrections in course as an organization navigates through its changing environment.
Aipac's Good Intentions Undermine Israel's Interests, Ali Wyne
Aipac's Good Intentions Undermine Israel's Interests, Ali Wyne
Human Rights & Human Welfare
While the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) is nominally pro-Israel, its advice undermines Israel’s interests. It does not encourage Israel to make concessions, but rather recommends that Israel ignore the reformists within and outside of it. The folly of such counsel becomes apparent when one recognizes that Israel’s current strategy cannot be sustained.
Community Policing: Broken Windows, Community Building, And Satisfaction With The Police, Robert M. Lombardo, Todd Lough
Community Policing: Broken Windows, Community Building, And Satisfaction With The Police, Robert M. Lombardo, Todd Lough
Criminal Justice & Criminology: Faculty Publications & Other Works
The concept of community policing dominates the law enforcement profession today. One would be hard pressed to find an advertisement for a police chief’s position that does not require a thorough understanding of this method of policing. Like the Kansas City preventive patrol experiment and the Rand report on the criminal investigation process, the call for community policing has led to dramatic changes in the way that police carry out their responsibilities. In spite of its popularity, there have been a number of challenges to community policing from social scientists who are particularly concerned about the ‘broken windows’ model of …

Lessons In Philanthropy: A Case Studies Approach, Center For Urban Research And Learning, Louis T. Delgado
Center for Urban Research and Learning: Publications and Other Works
Over the past twenty years, academic institutions have increasingly developed programs of study on the nonprofit sector, most of which emphasize nonprofit management or fundraising. The study of organized philanthropy in general, and foundation giving specifically, is still at a relatively early stage of development. Accordingly, the development of research and teaching materials available for use in formal academic settings is largely an unmet need. There are numerous experiences in the grant making process that simply go unreported and unavailable for educational purposes. These experiences, however, can prove extremely educational and should not be overlooked. The cased studies that follow …

Autism is a complex neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by impairment of social interaction, language, communication, and stereotyped, repetitive behavior. Genetic predisposition to Autism has been demonstrated in families and twin studies. There is evidence (linkage and genetic association, biochemical, neuropathological, functional and cytogenetic) that the gamma-amino-butyric acid receptor beta 3 subunit gene (GABRB3) at 15q11-q13 is a susceptibility candidate gene for Autism. The aim of this exploratory study was to identify new variants of this gene. We performed the molecular analysis (SSCP/Sequencing) of 10 exons and its intronic flanking regions of GABRB3, using a candidate gene screening approach in 18 idiopathic …

Archived Theses and Dissertations
This study explores the emergence of videoblogging as an online news phenomenon and investigates how this new technology is being adopted as a innovative mode of news diffusion. Rogers' diffusion of innovations theoretical framework is being used to analyze the characteristics of this innovation and that of its adopters with particular reference to online news diffusion. Findings indicate that the early adopters tend to be predominantly young male adults located in the higher income regions of the world. Video content posted is predominantly related to arts and entertainment with a substantial minority related to current affairs and politics. While the …
New York Placenames In Film Titles, Jay H. Bernstein
New York Placenames In Film Titles, Jay H. Bernstein
Publications and Research
From 1914 to 2006, 396 feature films with titles containing New York place names were released. This pattern emerged during the silent era, peaked from the late 1920s to the early 1940s, and then dropped off steadily before rebounding in the 1970s. This article discusses the cinematic representation of cities and urban life in the movies and the special place of New York as an “imagined city” and a cultural icon. New York’s associations in the popular imagination help explain the frequent occurrence of themes of negativity, violence, nightlife, and grandiosity (royalty or divinity) in these titles. The use of …

Physiological Responding In A Two-Dimensional Social Interaction Simulation, Sean Brannon
Physiological Responding In A Two-Dimensional Social Interaction Simulation, Sean Brannon
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Although there were no observed effects, several suggestions were made to inform researchers in designing a study of fluid interaction. With the increasing usage of computers in the conduct of research, there is ample evidence to suggest that some emotional or physiological responses may be reliably measured using two-dimensional computer simulations.
It was predicted in accordance with the previous aggression literature that when the participant was in the role of aggressor that autonomic nervous system (ANS) responses would decrease as a function of concentration or cognitive load. It was also predicted that when the participant was in the role of …
Mixing Research Methods In Health Professional Degrees: Thoughts For Undergraduate Students And Supervisors, Sophie Anaf, Lorraine A. Sheppard
Mixing Research Methods In Health Professional Degrees: Thoughts For Undergraduate Students And Supervisors, Sophie Anaf, Lorraine A. Sheppard
The Qualitative Report
This commentary considers some of the challenges of applying mixed methods research in undergraduate research degrees, especially in professions with a clinical health focus. Our experience in physiotherapy academia is used as an example. Mixed methods research is increasingly appreciated in its own right as a “third paradigm,” however the success of educating novice researchers in mixing methods requires reflection on a range of theoretical and practical issues. We explore some of the under- reported features of mixed methods on a theoretical level, including the use of terminology, and the challenge of research “labels,” and on a practical level, the …
First-Year Teachers And Induction Support: Ups, Downs, And In-Betweens, Sara Winstead Fry
First-Year Teachers And Induction Support: Ups, Downs, And In-Betweens, Sara Winstead Fry
The Qualitative Report
Novice teachers often struggle during the transition from being students of teaching to teachers of students. Consequently, high attrition rates characterize the first 3 years of teaching, underscoring a need to provide better support for beginning teachers. This investigation sought to answer the following question: How are 1s t-year teachers supported during induction and how do they respond to this support? Four 1st-year elementary teachers participated in a year-long case-study investigation. Primary form of data collection was monthly semi-structured phone interviews. Participants faced similar challenges, while adjusting to their new profession, but received varied, often inadequate, forms of support during …

Editorial: Shape Shifters: Librarians Evolve Yet Again In The Age Of Google, Mariana Regalado, Jill Cirasella
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Like all organisms and organizations, librarians and libraries evolve by adapting to changes and pressures in their environments. From scroll to codex to online text: every upgrade in technology is matched by an adaptation in librarianship. Nevertheless, despite centuries of evolution, the activities of librarians and the mission of libraries have remained essentially constant and are still recognizable. The pace of change in libraries has been especially rapid since the introduction of computers, and an important recent change is the advent of the “age of Google.” Heralded by the arrival in 1998 of the Google search engine, with its clean …

Using Google Analytics For Improving Library Website Content And Design: A Case Study, Wei Fang
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Google Analytics is a free web analytics solution that provides webmasters with insightful information about how visitors find and interact with their websites. In this case study, we have experimented in using Google Analytics to analyze two of our websites: The Rutgers-Newark Law Library main website and The New Jersey Digital Legal Library website. It was used to monitor our visitors' browsing activities and viewing behaviors for three months. Based on our findings from Google Analytics reports, we have redesigned our website. Subsequent data collected by Google Analytics have confirmed that our new design better fits the information needs of …
You And Me And Google Makes Three: Welcoming Google Into The Reference Interview, Jill Cirasella
You And Me And Google Makes Three: Welcoming Google Into The Reference Interview, Jill Cirasella
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Library patrons often approach the reference desk with indirect, incomplete, or misleading questions, known as "ill-formed" questions. Transforming ill-formed questions into well-formed ones is a crucial part of the reference interview, and Google can be an active participant in that process. This paper discusses how Google can help librarians and patrons deal with incomplete citations, incorrect citations, incorrect spellings, tip-of-the-tongue questions, and forgotten searches.
Library Resource Sharing In The Early Age Of Google, Beth Posner
Library Resource Sharing In The Early Age Of Google, Beth Posner
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Library information resource sharing has traditionally been organized around the physical transfer of loans and copies from one location to another. Such interlibrary loan activities have become successively easier and more efficient because of the use of various technologies. Some of the latest and most successful of these include various web-based information services, such as Google, which help to facilitate both physical delivery and online access to information resources. The challenge now facing ILL librarians is to evaluate how to best incorporate these services into their existing operations and to determine whether these constitute additional ways to help patrons access …
What About The Book? Google-Izing The Catalog With Tables Of Contents, Angi Faiks, Amy Radermacher, Amy Sheehan
What About The Book? Google-Izing The Catalog With Tables Of Contents, Angi Faiks, Amy Radermacher, Amy Sheehan
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
One of the many ways to meet the challenge of offering users a better search experience—and to continue the library's existence as a “growing organism” (Ranganathan)—in the current information atmosphere is to provide more text to search against, just as Google's Book Search does. One method for achieving this is to add tables of contents (TOC) and summary notes into a catalog's bibliographic records for books, thereby offering additional, highly relevant search terms into a library's database. While adding access points is not a new notion, libraries can start to meet users' expectations by providing them with more information about …

Google 'Til They Goggle: Trawling Electronic Databases To Build Your Collection And Better Serve Your Client Base, Carol Ottolenghi
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Too often, organizations and the public consider properly trained Library staff as “overhead,” or even "dead weight." Budget crunches and the “I’ll just Google it” attitude prevalent today can mean a shrinking – or completely eliminated – library. This paper discusses how the Library staff at the Ohio Attorney General’s Office paired the power of traditional librarian skills with Google, electronic data bases, and a variety of online “alert” systems for greatly increased outreach, effectiveness, and visibility within their organization.
Unclear On The Context: Refocusing On Information Literacy's Evaluative Component In The Age Of Google, Genevieve Williams
Unclear On The Context: Refocusing On Information Literacy's Evaluative Component In The Age Of Google, Genevieve Williams
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
In an era of information decontextualization, the evaluative component of information literacy is more important than ever. College students believe themselves to be expert researchers, due to their familiarity with Google; yet they also value the library and know to be critical about information resources. Previous theoretical work, including Marcia Bates's "berrypicking" model and Christine Pawley's analysis of the discourse of information literacy, provides a ground for developing a proactive response to the age of Google. Far from being made redundant by ease of access to information, our task of developing information literacy in college students is more critical than …
The View From An Elder: Closing Essay, Joellen Broome
The View From An Elder: Closing Essay, Joellen Broome
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
The author explores the shapeshifting of Wart, the young King Arthur in T.H. White's The Once and Future King, as a metaphor for professional and personal transformation as a librarian. The shape shift has been an attitude shift, a mental reshaping, of a librarian come lately to the field. Concerns about the staying power of new technology coexist with the magical gift of connection from tools like Google.
Tourism, Development And Poverty Reduction In Guizhou And Yunnan, John A. Donaldson
Tourism, Development And Poverty Reduction In Guizhou And Yunnan, John A. Donaldson
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
How did the differing strategies adopted to develop tourism in Guizhou and Yunnan affect patterns of economic development and poverty reduction? The answer is paradoxical. Both provincial governments incorporated tourism as part of their overall development strategies, but their tourism sites were distributed and structured strikingly differently. In Yunnan, although tourism contributed to rapid economic growth, it did not reduce rural poverty as much as might be expected from a large rural-based industry. By contrast, Guizhou's relatively small-scale tourism industry, although not contributing significantly to growth, was distributed largely in poor areas and was structured to allow poor people to …
A Structuralist Model Of The Small Open Economy In The Short, Medium And Long Run, Hian Teck Hoon, Edmund S. Phelps
A Structuralist Model Of The Small Open Economy In The Short, Medium And Long Run, Hian Teck Hoon, Edmund S. Phelps
Research Collection School Of Economics
Open-economy macroeconomics contains a monetary model in the Keynesian tradition that is deemed serviceable for analyzing the short run and a nonmonetary neoclassical model thought capable of handling the long run. But do the Keynesian and neoclassical models meet the challenges thrown out by the main events of the past few decades? We first indicate that the effects of these shocks on the open economy are not well captured by either the standard Keynesian model or the standard neoclassical theory. Next we provide a careful development of a nonmonetary model of the equilibrium path of the real exchange rate, share …

Nonlinear Filters Based On Taylor Series Expansions, Hisashi Tanizaki, Roberto S. Mariano
Research Collection School Of Economics
The nonlinear filters based on Taylor series approximation are broadly used for computational simplicity, even though their filtering estimates are clearly biased. In this paper, first, we analyze what is approximated when we apply the expanded nonlinear functions to the standard linear recursive Kalman filter algorithm. Next, since the state variable αt and αt-t are approximated as a conditional normal distribution given information up to time t - 1 (i.e., It-1) in approximation of the Taylor series expansion, it might be appropriate to evaluate each expectation by generating normal random numbers of αt and α …
