Reviewing Journal Rankings And Revisiting Peer Reviews: Editorial Perspectives, Timothy Adrian Robert Clark, Mike Wright Jun 2007

Reviewing Journal Rankings And Revisiting Peer Reviews: Editorial Perspectives, Timothy Adrian Robert Clark, Mike Wright

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

In this article we respond to the key points made by Macdonald and Kam (2007) in relation to journal quality and the peer review process. Whilst we appreciate that their tone is intentionally provocative, the picture they present is one of unremitting gloom and reluctant acquiescence to a system out of control. It is as if the publication process has a series of self‐supporting logics that separate it from any notion of publishing in order to benefit the discipline through the advance of knowledge and understanding. From this perspective the publishing process and the consequent content of management journals are …

Editorial: Shape Shifters: Librarians Evolve Yet Again In The Age Of Google, Mariana Regalado, Jill Cirasella

Publications and Research

Like all organisms and organizations, librarians and libraries evolve by adapting to changes and pressures in their environments. From scroll to codex to online text: every upgrade in technology is matched by an adaptation in librarianship. Nevertheless, despite centuries of evolution, the activities of librarians and the mission of libraries have remained essentially constant and are still recognizable. The pace of change in libraries has been especially rapid since the introduction of computers, and an important recent change is the advent of the “age of Google.” Heralded by the arrival in 1998 of the Google search engine, with its clean …

Merits And Motivations Of An Ashéninka Leader, Hanne Veber Jun 2007

Merits And Motivations Of An Ashéninka Leader, Hanne Veber

Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America

Recent approaches to life history studies emphasize the power of biography in processes of social construction, highlighting the individual—storyteller and social being—as creative and created in relation to others. Situated in collective meaning systems and their dynamics, autobiographical narration is transformed into agency as it provides definitions of situations and encodes models for action. This essay discusses alternative interpretations of the autobiographical narrative of an Ashéninka leader, Miguel Camaiteri, in Peru's Upper Amazon, focusing on the exposition of his motivations for becoming an indigenous activist and contemplating the way his self-presentation is contingent upon the political agenda he is pursuing …

Perspectives On Globalization, Social Justice And Welfare, James Midgley Jun 2007

Perspectives On Globalization, Social Justice And Welfare, James Midgley

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Although the social science literature on globalization has proliferated, social policy and social work scholars have not adequately debated the consequences of globalization for social welfare and social justice. Drawing on different social science interpretations of globalization, four major perspectives that offer different analytical and normative insights into globalization are identified and their implications for social welfare and social justice are briefly examined. The implications of these perspectives for social policy and social work scholarship are also considered.

Globalization, Immigration And The Welfare State: A Cross-National Comparison, Qingwen Xu Jun 2007

Globalization, Immigration And The Welfare State: A Cross-National Comparison, Qingwen Xu

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Over the past decades, the forces of globalization have helped created a huge wave of immigration. The relationship between globalization and immigration has been intensely examined in the last decade with a focus not only on whether and how much globalization has caused international immigration but also how to promote and sustain a just global system for the growing number of immigrants. This study selects three developed countries with different welfare state philosophies and traditions-Australia, Sweden and the United States-and compares how they cope with the growing number of immigrants and their various needs. This paper reflects thinking about states' …

Globalization And Human Trafficking, Loring Jones, David W. Engstrom, Tricia Hilliard, Mariel Diaz Jun 2007

Globalization And Human Trafficking, Loring Jones, David W. Engstrom, Tricia Hilliard, Mariel Diaz

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Globalization demands that social workers embrace more than just local and national perspectives; they must adopt an international viewpoint as well. A negative aspect of globalization that deserves more attention is the international movement of labor. This paper presents a description and analysis of trafficking, the more deleterious part of this movement of people, in a global context. Decision makers seeking to make global migration more humane need to know about the dynamics and process of trafficking, as well as ways to combat it. Definitional controversies, contextual issues (including the dynamics and processes of trafficking), and consequences of this movement …

Globalization And Social Work Education And Practice: Exploring Australian Practitioners' Views, Marina Findlay, John Mccormack Jun 2007

Globalization And Social Work Education And Practice: Exploring Australian Practitioners' Views, Marina Findlay, John Mccormack

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

The process of globalization is a controversial movement supported by some due to the potential cross-national benefits, but criticized by others because of the fragmented or uneven distribution of those benefits. As many social workers interact with clients who may be affected by globalization processes, we were interested to investigate their educational preparedness and practice views on this topic. Sixty-six social workers completed a questionnaire which explored the relationship between local and international issues. Practitioner responses indicated a strong interest in the topic and widespread agreement that there is a link between local and global issues on clients in their …

“Have You Searched Google Yet?” Using Google As A Discovery Tool For Cataloging, Jennifer Lang Jun 2007

“Have You Searched Google Yet?” Using Google As A Discovery Tool For Cataloging, Jennifer Lang

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

This paper demonstrates how some of Google's search functionalities can be used to locate information to assist in the cataloging process. In addition, the results of an informal survey of catalogers shows that while some respondents never considered using Google or prefer different methods for finding information, others find Google to be a good supplement to "traditional" cataloging tools.

Standing Up For Open Source, Lee David Jaffe, Greg Careaga Jun 2007

Standing Up For Open Source, Lee David Jaffe, Greg Careaga

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The open source movement is a vital and innovative challenger to commercial channels for software and publishing. Interests and values shared between libraries and open source communities, along with significant functional advantages to the open source model, should lead librarians to adopt open source tools and become more engaged with open source developers and their projects. Instead, there is a significant gap between the potential of open source and the adoption of these tools in libraries. The authors address the causes and potential consequences, and suggest strategies that can be adopted by advocates for open source in libraries.

Seminal Barriers To Female High School Students’ Choice Of Information Technology As A Career Alternative, Donna M. Grant Jun 2007

Seminal Barriers To Female High School Students’ Choice Of Information Technology As A Career Alternative, Donna M. Grant

College of Computing and Digital Media Dissertations

The under-representation of women in the IT profession is a well-known Information Systems phenomenon. Unlike the other sciences and mathematics, where the percentage of women receiving bachelor’s degrees has increased over the past two decades, the percentage of women obtaining degrees in technology has decreased. Information Technology started strong in 1984 with 37.06% women receiving bachelor’s degrees; however, 2004 brought a decrease to a low of 25.05%, near the level of three decades earlier. The consequences of this under-representation include non-diverse IT solutions, a predicted IT workforce shortage, and the United States losing its ability to participate as a fervent …

Membership In A Particular Social Group: International Journalists And U.S. Asylum Law, Edward L. Carter, Brad Clark

Faculty Publications

At least thirty non-U.S. journalists in the last decade have argued in U.S. Courts of Appeal that U.S. immigration authorities erroneously denied their asylum applications based on persecution in their native countries. ... Still, journalists persecuted in their home countries for their journalism work might better fit the statutory qualifications for asylum --primarily persecution on account of race, religion, nationality, political opinion or membership in a "particular social group"--than the U.S. immigration system sometimes acknowledges. ... Finally, and most importantly, the asylum seeker bears the burden to establish that he or she is unable or unwilling to return to his …

Reconciling Dichotomous Demands: Telemarketing Agents In Bangalore And Mumbai, India, Ernesto Noronha, Premilla D'Cruz

The Qualitative Report

Though outsourcing has created enormous employment potential in India’s information technology enabled services/business process outsourcing (ITES/BPO) sector, the implications for employees remain to be understood. The present paper describes employee experiences in telemarketing outbound call centers in Bangalore and Mumbai, India. Following van Manen’s (1998) hermeneutic phenomenological approach, data were collected through unstructured conversational interviews with 18 telemarketing agents identified vi a snowball sampling and were subject to holistic and sententious thematic analyses. Reconciling dichotomous experiences at work was the label used to capture participants’ core experiences and indicated that while participants’ simultaneous positive and negative experiences contributed to a …

A Typology Of Mixed Methods Sampling Designs In Social Science Research, Anthony J. Onwuegbuzie, Kathleen M.T. Collins

The Qualitative Report

This paper provides a framework for developing sampling designs in mixed methods research. First, we present sampling schemes that have been associated with quantitative and qualitative research. Second, we discuss sample size considerations and provide sample size recommendations for each of the major research designs for quantitative and qualitative approaches. Third, we provide a sampling design typology and we demonstrate how sampling designs can be classified according to time orientation of the components and relationship of the qualitative and quantitative sample. Fourth, we present four major crises to mixed methods research and indicate how each crisis may be used to …

Research, Narrative And Fiction: Conference Story, Jonathan Wyatt Jun 2007

Research, Narrative And Fiction: Conference Story, Jonathan Wyatt

The Qualitative Report

The purpose of this article is to contribute to the discussion concerning the value and validity of fiction, and arts-based approaches more broadly, as research. I offer this contribution through a narrative: Conference Story. The narrative involves its characters, in an Oxford pub, debating the merits and otherwise of Peter Clough’s (2002) book, Narratives and Fictions in Educational Research. The form, fictional narrative, performs and personifies this discussion. The article considers Clough’s purposes in undertaking and presenting his research in this form, the philosophical position(s) that underpin(s) it, the extent to which his narratives are indeed research, and how such …

Two Autoethnographies: A Search For Understanding Of Gender And Age, Joann Franklin Klinker, Reese H. Todd Jun 2007

Two Autoethnographies: A Search For Understanding Of Gender And Age, Joann Franklin Klinker, Reese H. Todd

The Qualitative Report

The authors describe a project that illustrates the use of autoethnography as a research methodology to better understand their decisions to become professors. Strangers to one another, both authors discovered common motivations to make mid-life changes in opposition to cultural expectations. A review of the literature on epidemic theory, creativity, the women’s movement, role change, and life stage theory offer insight into the experiences that motivated them to reject their traditional cultural roles. Both also found a shared un willingness to accept invisibility, a common aspect of life for women over 40.
