Strategic Distinguishability And Robust Virtual Implementation, Dirk Bergemann, Stephen Morris Jun 2007

Strategic Distinguishability And Robust Virtual Implementation, Dirk Bergemann, Stephen Morris

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

In a general interdependent preference environment, we characterize when two payoff types can be distinguished by their rationalizable strategic choices without any prior knowledge of their beliefs and higher order beliefs. We show that two types are strategically distinguishable if and only if they satisfy a separability condition. The separability condition for each agent essentially requires that there is not too much interdependence in preferences across agents. A social choice function — mapping payoff type profiles to outcomes — can be robustly virtually implemented if there exists a mechanism such that every equilibrium on every type space achieves an outcome …

Historic Turning Points In Real Estate, Robert J. Shiller Jun 2007

Historic Turning Points In Real Estate, Robert J. Shiller

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

This paper looks for markers of ends of real estate booms or busts. The changes in market psychology and related indicators that occurred at real estate market turning points in the United States since the 1980s are compared with changes at turning points in the more distant past. In all these episodes changes in an atmosphere of optimism about the future course of home prices, changes in public interpretation of the boom, as well as evidence of supply response to the high prices of a boom, are noted.

Long Run Covariance Matrices For Fractionally Integrated Processes, Peter C.B. Phillips, Chang Sik Kim Jun 2007

Long Run Covariance Matrices For Fractionally Integrated Processes, Peter C.B. Phillips, Chang Sik Kim

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

An asymptotic expansion is given for the autocovariance matrix of a vector of stationary long-memory processes with memory parameters d satisfying 0 < d < 1/2. The theory is then applied to deliver formulae for the long run covariance matrices of multivariate time series with long memory.

The Canela Diaries: Their Nature, Uses, And Future, William H. Crocker Jun 2007

The Canela Diaries: Their Nature, Uses, And Future, William H. Crocker

Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America

In 1966, three Canela Indians of Brazil started writing diaries about their lives and tribal events for me. Since then, I have collected about 150,000 manuscript pages and 2,000 hours on tape. About twenty-two diarists have contributed through the years, though never more than twelve at once. The Canela diary program grew out of my predilection for a personal approach to field work as well as my preference for qualitative over quantitative research methods. Excerpts from the diaries are included, one set to provide different points of view about a murder and others to show how I have used diarists' …

Anchoring “The Symbolic Economy Of Alterity” With Autobiography, Suzanne Oakdale Jun 2007

Anchoring “The Symbolic Economy Of Alterity” With Autobiography, Suzanne Oakdale

Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America

This essay addresses the usefulness of Eduardo Viveiros de Castro's concept of the "symbolic economy of alterity" for understanding the subjectively meaningful historical details of individual lives. My focus is the autobiographical narratives of two Kayabi men from central Brazil whose lives have spanned the twentieth century. Their accounts show that these men do, in fact, speak of identity, with kin as being fashioned gradually out from alterity, in keeping with Viveiros de Castro's model. However, this process, when seen over a significant span of time, is highly reversible, causing others and selves to become very ambiguous figures with respect …

An Unequal Consumption? Sex And Gender Differences In Tuberculosis, Sarah K. W. Avink Jun 2007

An Unequal Consumption? Sex And Gender Differences In Tuberculosis, Sarah K. W. Avink

Masters Theses

In the developing world today, tuberculosis (TB) accounts for 26% of avoidable deaths (Holmes et al 1998). Poverty is considered to be a main risk factor for TB, and since some estimates show that women make up 70% of the world's poor (Thorson and Diwan 1998:11), one might conclude that the incidence of TB worldwide would be much higher for women than men. However, reports reviewed in this thesis show the reverse to be true, with an adult annual male notification ratio for TB at 1.5 to 2.1 times higher than that of females. Both biological reasons and social factors …

Teaching Children With Autism To Mand For Information Using Video Modeling, Courtney Dillon Jun 2007

Teaching Children With Autism To Mand For Information Using Video Modeling, Courtney Dillon

Masters Theses

Skinner's taxonomy of verbal operants defines language in functional terms specifying the relevant controlling variables in terms of antecedent and consequent influences. A mand for information is a request for a specific verbal response that has momentarily high reinforcing value due to the presence of an establishing operation. Contrived establishing operations have been used for teaching mands for information, however, researchers have not yet investigated the effects of using video modeling to teach mands for information to children with autism. This study investigated the effects of video modeling with a contrived establishing operation for teaching two children with autism to …

Ending Conflict: Raising The Costs Of Defection In African Failed States, Brian Crisher Jun 2007

Ending Conflict: Raising The Costs Of Defection In African Failed States, Brian Crisher

Masters Theses

This paper views the civil conflicts in African failed states through the lens of game theory. From the numerous peace agreements and cease-fires that have been broken in these conflicts, it is clear that defecting from such agreements,is often more profitable than abiding by them. Why is this so? Furthermore, what can be done to raise the costs of defection and therefore promote cooperation amongst the fighting parties? This paper proposes that the international community has the ability to do just this through one-sided intervention.

Brainstem Cholinergic Modulation Of Muscle Tone In Infant Rats, Andrew J. Gall, Amy Poremba, Mark S. Blumberg Jun 2007

Brainstem Cholinergic Modulation Of Muscle Tone In Infant Rats, Andrew J. Gall, Amy Poremba, Mark S. Blumberg

Faculty Publications

In week-old rats, lesions of the dorsolateral pontine tegmentum (DLPT) and nucleus pontis oralis (PnO) have opposing effects on nuchal muscle tone. Specifically, pups with DLPT lesions exhibit prolonged bouts of nuchal muscle atonia (indicative of sleep) and pups with PnO lesions exhibit prolonged bouts of high nuchal muscle tone (indicative of wakefulness). Here we test the hypothesis that nuchal muscle tone is modulated, at least in part, by cholinergically mediated interactions between these two regions. First, in unanesthetized pups, we found that chemical infusion of the cholinergic agonist carbachol (22 mM, 0.1 µL) within the DLPT produced high muscle …

A Yaminahua Autobiographical Song: Caqui Caqui, Pierre Deleage Jun 2007

A Yaminahua Autobiographical Song: Caqui Caqui, Pierre Deleage

Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America

This essay proposes a theoretical framework of the relationship between autobiography and tradition. In support of this framework, I present a transcription and translation of an autobiographical song recorded among the Yaminahua (in the Western Amazon of Peru). My account of this song allows me to define an original discursive genre: the traditional autobiography. Two contradictory features characterize this genre. On the one hand, it is autobiographical because it makes reference to the personal life of the speaker. On the other hand, it is traditional in the sense that it is inherited from another speaker and faithfully reproduced. I explore …

This paper provides an assessment of empirical evidence on the effect of financial globalization on developing economies. The authors used dejure restrictions on capital flows and actual capital flows across national borders in measuring the extent of a country's financial integration with the global economy.

The North Korea-China Relationship : Context And Dynamics, Tim Beal Jun 2007

The North Korea-China Relationship : Context And Dynamics, Tim Beal

CAPS Working Paper Series

All bilateral relationships are embedded within a wider context, but nowhere is this context more important than in the North Korea China relationship. For North Korea (the DPRK), China has been a bulwark against the United States, and in earlier periods, a counterbalance to the Soviet Union. However, North Korea has always been wary of becoming too dependent on China and one reason, though obviously not the major one, for its desire to establish normal and even friendly, relations with the United States, and Japan, is to offset Chinese influence. For China also, the United States is the main focus …

Factors Affecting Website Reconstruction From The Web Infrastructure, Frank Mccown, Norou Diawara, Michael L. Nelson Jun 2007

Factors Affecting Website Reconstruction From The Web Infrastructure, Frank Mccown, Norou Diawara, Michael L. Nelson

Computer Science Faculty Publications

When a website is suddenly lost without a backup, it may be reconstituted by probing web archives and search engine caches for missing content. In this paper we describe an experiment where we crawled and reconstructed 300 randomly selected websites on a weekly basis for 14 weeks. The reconstructions were performed using our web-repository crawler named Warrick which recovers missing resources from the Web Infrastructure (WI), the collective preservation effort of web archives and search engine caches. We examine several characteristics of the websites over time including birth rate, decay and age of resources. We evaluate the reconstructions when compared …

Data Note: Vr Rehabilitation Rates Of People With Mental Retardation/Developmental Disabilities (Mr/Dd) In 2005, Frank A. Smith, Alberto Migliore

Data Note Series, Institute for Community Inclusion

Of the over 48,000 persons nationwide with mental retardation or other developmental disabilities (MR/DD) who closed out of the Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) system after receiving employment services in FY2005, more than half were successful closures, yielding a rehabilitation rate of 56.9%. This rehabilitation rate is calculated by dividing the number of successful closures, which is employment in any setting with the exception of sheltered workshops, by the total number of closures who received employment services.

The Rise Of Asian-Owned Businesses In Massachusetts: Data From The 2002 Economic Census Survey Of Business Owners, Michael Liu, Paul Watanabe Jun 2007

The Rise Of Asian-Owned Businesses In Massachusetts: Data From The 2002 Economic Census Survey Of Business Owners, Michael Liu, Paul Watanabe

Institute for Asian American Studies Publications

Asian-owned businesses are following a very rapid growth trajectory in Massachusetts. In fact, Asian-owned firms increased by 44 percent in Massachusetts from 1997 to 2002. This growth is nearly double the national gain of 24 percent for all Asian-owned firms in the United States. Moreover, during the same time period, the number of all firms in the state expanded by only five percent. Similar comparisons can be made when looking at sales and receipts and number of paid employees. From 1997-2002, Asian-owned businesses in Massachusetts experienced an increase in sales and receipts of 20 percent. This was over three times …

An Analysis Of The Woodland Ceramics From Galum Crossing (Site 21c4-29): An Early Late Woodland Occupation In The Southern Illinois Interior, Gabrielle Aberle Jun 2007

An Analysis Of The Woodland Ceramics From Galum Crossing (Site 21c4-29): An Early Late Woodland Occupation In The Southern Illinois Interior, Gabrielle Aberle

Masters Theses

Situated on upper Galum Creek at the northwest margin of the Big Muddy River drainage basin, the primary occupation at Gal um Crossing consisted of an early Late Woodland habitation dating from approximately A.D. 450 to the early A.D. 700s. The cultural-historical affiliation of the Woodland occupation and the relationship of Galum Crossing to local and regional contemporaneous sites were assessed using radiocarbon dating and an attribute-based analysis of the Woodland ceramic assemblage. This provided data for examining the designation of the proposed Jamestown phase (Moffat 1991, 1992) as a transitional unit between the Middle Woodland Crab Orchard Tradition and …

The Effects Of Differential Reinforcement Of Unprompted Responding On Skill Acquisition Of Children With Autism, Amanda M. Karsten Jun 2007

The Effects Of Differential Reinforcement Of Unprompted Responding On Skill Acquisition Of Children With Autism, Amanda M. Karsten

Masters Theses

The common recommendation to reserve the most potent reinforcers for unprompted responses during acquisition programming, sometimes referred to as differential reinforcement of independent responding, has little published empirical support for its purported benefits (enhanced rate of acquisition, decreased likelihood of errors and prompt dependence). The purpose of the current investigation was to compare the delivery of high-quality reinforcers exclusively following unprompted responses (differential condition) with the delivery of high-quality reinforcers following both prompted and unprompted responses (non-differential condition) on the rate of skill acquisition for two children with autism. Participants were taught multiple· pairs of target skills (picture sequencing, tacting) …

Evaluation Of An Outpatient Training Service For Children With Autism Spectrum Disorders And Their Families, Britt Winter Jun 2007

Evaluation Of An Outpatient Training Service For Children With Autism Spectrum Disorders And Their Families, Britt Winter

Masters Theses

Autism spectrum disorders have a substantial impact on the lives of families and can result in a variety of enrichments to the family environment as well as certain specific stressors (Hecimovic & Gregory, 2005; Tidmarsh & Volkmar, 2003). One service that has proven effective for treatment of individuals with autism spectrum disorders as well as improvement in family dynamics is parent training (Schreibman, 1988). The current study examined 46 individual client files from an outpatient parent training clinic serving children with autism spectrum disorders. Parents were taught to implement interventions for skill acquisition with their children using a behavioral skills …

Functional Assessment Of Problem Behavior In Children With Autism Spectrum Disorders: A Review Of 32 Cases, Jessa R. Love Jun 2007

Functional Assessment Of Problem Behavior In Children With Autism Spectrum Disorders: A Review Of 32 Cases, Jessa R. Love

Masters Theses

The prevalence of autism spectrum disorders among children aged 4 to 17 years is approximately 5.5 to 5.7 out of 1000 children (Centers for Disease Control, 2006). It is not uncommon for children with these disorders to display a wide range of problem behavior (e.g., Farrar-Schneider, 1992; Oswald et al., 1992). While a number of studies have reported aggregated data on the reinforcement functions of such problem behavior, none have reported the distribution of functions with a sample comprised solely of individuals on the autism spectrum. Thus, the purpose of this study was to examine individual client data from an …

Measuring Effectiveness Of Civic Participation At The University Level In Turkey: A Case Study Of The Civic Involvement Project At Sabanci University, Tara Hopkins

Center for Social Development Research

Sabanci University, located in Istanbul, Turkey, launched the Civic Involvement Project (CIP) in 1999 for students at the university level. This study examines the effectiveness of CIP, with the principle goals of measuring participants’ perceptions and identifying the program’s strengths and weaknesses. In addition, this research seeks to better understand how CIP compares to other youth involvement/participation programs. The impact of service-learning on several civic education variables (i.e. social awareness, social networking, political awareness, critical thinking, and personal development) and the effects of characteristics of service-learning experiences on the development of students are also explored.

Acquisition Of Owl Dl Axioms From Lexical Resources, Johanna Volker, Pascal Hitzler, Philipp Cimiano Jun 2007

Acquisition Of Owl Dl Axioms From Lexical Resources, Johanna Volker, Pascal Hitzler, Philipp Cimiano

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

State-of-the-art research on automated learning of ontologies from text currently focuses on inexpressive ontologies. The acquisition of complex axioms involving logical connectives, role restrictions, and other expressive features of the Web Ontology Language OWL remains largely unexplored. In this paper, we present a method and implementation for enriching inexpressive OWL ontologies with expressive axioms which is based on a deep syntactic analysis of natural language definitions. We argue that it can serve as a core for a semi-automatic ontology engineering process supported by a methodology that integrates methods for both ontology learning and evaluation. The feasibility of our approach is …

Algorithms For Paraconsistent Reasoning With Owl, Yue Ma, Pascal Hitzler, Zuoquan Lin Jun 2007

Algorithms For Paraconsistent Reasoning With Owl, Yue Ma, Pascal Hitzler, Zuoquan Lin

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

In an open, constantly changing and collaborative environment like the forthcoming Semantic Web, it is reasonable to expect that knowledge sources will contain noise and inaccuracies. Practical reasoning techniques for ontologies therefore will have to be tolerant to this kind of data, including the ability to handle inconsistencies in a meaningful way. For this purpose, we employ paraconsistent reasoning based on four-valued logic, which is a classical method for dealing with inconsistencies in knowledge bases. Its transfer to OWL DL, however, necessitates the making of fundamental design choices in dealing with class inclusion, which has resulted in differing proposals for …
