Global Access To Science – Meeting The Revolution, Tom Cochrane
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
This paper considers the large changes occurring in the way science is done, and the global significance of such changes. It reviews the mission of librarianship in promoting access to science and then surveys developments in recent years specifically in improving open access to scientific publications, covering a range of issues including significant shifts in the public policy debate about access, as well as some of the arguments about the best means of achieving outcomes. It concludes with a review of fresh challenges in terms of access to scientific data (eResearch, eScience), and gives a view that while libraries cannot …

Electronic Texts In American Studies, Paul Royster
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Presentations
For the past year and a half I have been engaged in publishing open-access online editions of primary works of early American history and literature. Currently, about 40 of these are posted in the University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s institutional repository, at http://digitalcommons.unl.edu/etas . My paper for the OIEAHC & SEA session will include: 1) a recap of issues faced and problems solved in designing and creating these electronic books; 2) an outline of editorial principles and guidelines for selection, textual editing, and annotation of works in the series; 3) a report on dissemination and usage data (specifically links and download statistics); …

The Impacts Of Climatic Changes For Water Resources Of The Colorado And Sacramento-San Joaquin River Basins, Peter H. Gleick, Elizabeth L. Chalecki
Political Science Faculty Publications
A wide variety of regional assessments of the water-related impacts of climatic change have been done over the past two decades, using different methods, approaches, climate models, and assumptions. As part of the Water Sector research for the National Assessment of the Implications of Climatic Variability and Change for the United States, several major summaries have been prepared, looking at the differences and similarities in results among regional research projects. Two such summaries are presented here, for the Colorado River Basin and the Sacramento River Basin. Both of these watersheds are vitally important to the social, economic, and ecological character …
A Framework Of Ordered Climate Effects On Water Resources: A Comprehensive Bibliography, Elizabeth L. Chalecki, Peter H. Gleick
A Framework Of Ordered Climate Effects On Water Resources: A Comprehensive Bibliography, Elizabeth L. Chalecki, Peter H. Gleick
Political Science Faculty Publications
An examination of the metadata for almost 900 bibliographic references on the effects of climate change and variability on U.S. water resources reveals strengths and weaknesses in our current knowledge. Considerable progress has been made in the modeling of climate change effects on first-order systems such as regional hydrology, but significant work remains to be done in understanding subsequent effects on the second-, third-, and fourth-order economic and social systems (e.g., agriculture, trade balance, and national economic development) that water affects. In order to remedy a recently-revealed lack of understanding about climate change on the part of the public, climate …

Family-Friendly Workplace Culture, Flexibility, And Workplace Support For Dependent Care : The Perspectives Of Human Resource Professionals, Katherine June Huffstutter
Family-Friendly Workplace Culture, Flexibility, And Workplace Support For Dependent Care : The Perspectives Of Human Resource Professionals, Katherine June Huffstutter
Dissertations and Theses
Integration of family responsibilities and employment demands is challenging for all families, but particularly for those families with extraordinary care requirements of children with mental health disabilities. Utilization of workplace supports, such as flexible work arrangements, has been identified in the work-family literature as an important indicator of organizational responsiveness to employee's family needs (Allen, 2001; Eaton, 2003; Hammer, Neal, Newsom, Brockwood, & Colton, 2005; Secret, 2000). A better understanding of which organizational conditions may improve utilization of available family-friendly supports by employees caring for children with mental health disorders can improve work-life integration for these families. This study examines …

The Scope And Nature Of Panhandling And The Related Crime In Denver, Colorado, Megan A. Gall
Geography and the Environment: Graduate Student Capstones
Nationally, increases in the number of panhandlers and homeless people are associated with social and economic issues and are the subject of public policy debate, sociological inquiry and public interest (DHPG 2003). Panhandlers and homeless people are collectively called transients for this research. In the 1950s, the deinstitutionalization of the mentally ill caused the first major influx of homelessness. Discrepancies between affordable housing and wages grew through the 1960s and 1970s and the problem did not gain national attention until the 1980s (DCEH n.d.). The increased attention is primarily due to the continued scarcity of housing, increasing discrepancies between housing …
