A Semantic Framework For Identifying Events In A Service Oriented Architecture, Karthik Gomadam, Ajith Harshana Ranabahu, Lakshmish Ramaswamy, Amit P. Sheth, Kunal Verma

Kno.e.sis Publications

We propose a semantic framework for automatically identifying events as a step towards developing an adaptive middleware for Service Oriented Architecture (SOA). Current related research focuses on adapting to events that violate certain non-functional objectives of the service requestor. Given the large of number of events that can happen during the execution of a service, identifying events that can impact the non-functional objectives of a service request is a key challenge. To address this problem we propose an approach that allows service requestors to create semantically rich service requirement descriptions, called semantic templates. We propose a formal model for expressing …

Racial Differences In The Relationship Between Infant Mortality And Socioeconomic Status, Kelly Stamper Balistreri, Edward G. Stockwell, Franklin W. Goza

Sociology Faculty Publications

This study presents an ecological analysis of the relationship between infant mortality and economic status by race in metropolitan Ohio, using census data on mother's residence and economic status determined by the percentage of low-income families living in each area. The analysis updates previous studies as white-non-white comparisons for total infant mortality are examined for the US censuses of 1960, 1970, 1980, 1990 and 2000; and more detailed period- and broad cause-specific rates are presented for 2000. A pronounced inverse association is consistently found between income status and infant mortality for whites, while for non-whites this pattern first emerges in …

The Middle Tier In American Federalism: State Government Policy Activism During The Bush Presidency, Dale Krane Jul 2007

The Middle Tier In American Federalism: State Government Policy Activism During The Bush Presidency, Dale Krane

Public Administration Faculty Publications

Demarcations and assessments of particular periods of American federalism typically focus attention on national–state relationships, and ignore the independent activities of the 50 states. Labels applied to a period are often based on the federalism stance taken by a president. One can think of Lyndon Johnson's “creative federalism,” Richard Nixon's “new federalism,” and Ronald Reagan's “new, new federalism.” President George W. Bush, unlike some of his recent predecessors, has not proclaimed his own distinct vision of federal relationships, and consequently efforts to describe and assess the character of federalism during his administration must rely on a review of policy actions …

From Governance To Political Economy: Insights From A Study Of Relations Between Corporations And Workers, Harry W. Arthurs, Claire Mumme Jul 2007

From Governance To Political Economy: Insights From A Study Of Relations Between Corporations And Workers, Harry W. Arthurs, Claire Mumme

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

This study explores four postwar attempts to re-imagine the role of workers within the corporation and especially their relation to the processes of corporate governance. Employees have been variously conceptualized as "citizens at work," whose rights of association, speech, assembly, and due process can be secured through collective bargaining; as "stakeholders," whose interests are entitled to consideration analogous to those of corporate shareholders; as "human capital," worth preserving and enhancing through enlightened employment policies and practices; and as "investors"-actual holders of corporate equity through pension funds and other vehicles. Despite the descriptive power and normative appeal of these approaches, each …

Female Sexual-Offenders: Personality Pathology As A Mediator Of The Relationship Between Childhood Sexual Abuse History And Sexual Abuse Perpetration Against Others, Kelly Ann Christopher, Catherine J. Lutz-Zois, Amanda R. Reinhardt

Psychology Faculty Publications

Objective: The goal was to examine, in an all-female sample, possible mechanisms for the relationship between a history of childhood sexual abuse and the likelihood of perpetrating sexual abuse as an adult. It was hypothesized that Borderline and Antisocial Personality Disorder tendencies would mediate the relationship between these two forms of abuse.

Method: One hundred forty two female participants (61 sex-offenders and 81 non-sex offenders) were recruited from a women’s prison in the Midwest. The participants completed measures that included a childhood history of sexual abuse, socially desirable responding, primary and secondary psychopathy, and Borderline Personality Disorder tendencies.

Results: Participants …

Race/Ethnicity And The Attitudes Of College Students Toward Women In Policing, Calvin Haba Jul 2007

Race/Ethnicity And The Attitudes Of College Students Toward Women In Policing, Calvin Haba

Criminology & Criminal Justice Theses - Archive

The attitudes toward women in policing were compared among college students from the three racial/ethnic groups of African American, Hispanic, and White. Because of the limited literature available, this research explored Hispanic students' attitudes toward women in policing. With the influx of the Hispanic population within the United States, it is important to focus on the attitudes of this race/ethnicity toward women in policing. The findings revealed that the respondents generally supported women in policing, however males were less supportive than females. This analysis also indicates that African American, Hispanic, and White college students are all generally supportive of women …

Seeing Groups, Donelson R. Forsyth Jul 2007

Seeing Groups, Donelson R. Forsyth

Jepson School of Leadership Studies articles, book chapters and other publications

Sometimes I think that only a select few of us—members of Division 49, for example— really understand groups and group approaches to treatment. Last week in class a student, and a particularly bright one at that, looked puzzled when I spoke about group psychotherapy: Is that a method used to treat crazy groups, he asked? Later that same week I was meeting with a professor in the school of business and I mentioned group psychotherapy. He was equally bewildered. Is that a team-building intervention for poorly functioning groups, he suggested? Then, while reading the brand-new APA Dictionary of Psychology (2007) …

Peningkatan Kinerja Industri Manufaktur Di Indonesia Melalui Penurunan High Cost Economy Periode 1990-2003, Beta Yulianita Gitaharie, Eugenia Mardanugraha, Chaikal Nuryakin, Suraya Suraya

Jurnal Ekonomi dan Pembangunan Indonesia

The economic crises attacking Asian regions in the mid of /997 have brought depressing impacts to Indonesia's economy. Indonesia experiences a declining share of investment- it is even the lowest amongst neighboring countries. Indonesia also ranks the first position in the issue of inefficiency which further discourages investors to invest in Indonesia. The study focuses on the issue of efficiency in the manufacturing industry whose share in the economy tends to increase during 1988-2005 in a higher percentage than in the agriculture and services sectors. The objectives of the study are two-folds, first is to measure the score ofefficiency in …

Bridging The Gap: African And African American Communication In Historically Black Colleges And Universities, Kehbuma Langmia Jul 2007

Bridging The Gap: African And African American Communication In Historically Black Colleges And Universities, Kehbuma Langmia

Department of Strategic, Legal, and Management Communications Faculty Publications

This study stands as a progressive attempt to investigate the intercultural communicative dynamic between African and African American college students enrolled in historically Black colleges and universities. As these two distinct cultures share more of the same space, it becomes increasingly pertinent to evaluate and understand the ways in which perception and stereotype affect intercultural interactions. Utilizing focus group sessions, various cultural nuances and stereotypical perceptions of each culture arecandidly discussed. A combination of Hans-Georg Gadamer’s phenomenology and Martin Buber’s dialogue act as the theoretical lenses that organize the invaluable data collected from a focus group discussion. The underlying significance …

[Introduction To] With The Weathermen: The Personal Journal Of A Revolutionary Woman, Susan Stern, Laura Browder

Bookshelf

Drugs. Sex. Revolutionary violence. From its first pages, Susan Stern's memoir With the Weathermen provides a candid, first-hand look at the radical politics and the social and cultural environment of the New Left during the late 1960s.

The Weathermen--a U.S.-based, revolutionary splinter group of Students for a Democratic Society--advocated the overthrow of the government and capitalism, and toward that end, carried out a campaign of bombings, jailbreaks, and riots throughout the United States. In With the Weathermen Stern traces her involvement with this group, and her transformation from a shy, married graduate student into a go-go dancing, street-fighting "macho mama." …

The Decline Of The American Superpower, Earl H. Fry Jul 2007

The Decline Of The American Superpower, Earl H. Fry

Faculty Publications

By 2040, the United States will no longer be considered as a global superpower and the world may be headed toward a long era devoid of any superpowers. This will occur as a result of several negative trends within the United States itself, combined with changing dynamics and exigencies in the global system and the rise of more powerful competitors in Asia and Europe. The negative trends within the United States include unprecedented governmental and international debt, dysfunctional campaign-finance and lobbying systems, unmanageable entitlement and health-care obligations, a deteriorating public education network, an inordinate concentration of wealth and power in …

Henry George: The Theory Of Distribution In Progress And Poverty, Phillip J. Bryson Jul 2007

Henry George: The Theory Of Distribution In Progress And Poverty, Phillip J. Bryson

Faculty Publications

The core of Henry George's economic theory appeared in his most widely-read book, Progress and Poverty. On the basis of his dramatic "single tax" theory, his work became widely known and gained some avid followers who endeavored to base policy on it. But the work was also of value in George's day and interest in our day because of its economic content. George was not a part of the academic economics establishment of his day and his theory was of strictly classical methodology, but it still had much to commend it. A simple model to present his concepts in more …

Water. The Geopolitics Of Water, Paul Michael Wihbey, Ilan Berman Jul 2007

Water. The Geopolitics Of Water, Paul Michael Wihbey, Ilan Berman

New England Journal of Public Policy

In the great geo-strategic game known as the Middle East, peace politics get much of the press and the attention of policy leaders. On occasion, oil takes center stage but often for the wrong reason (see, e.g., "The End of the Oil Era and the Price of Oil"). What is important to understand is that water is in fact the key strategic resource in the region and if you follow the flow of water, you'll follow the politics and policy machinations that lie at the heart of the Israeli-Syrian dialogue. IASPS Fellow in Strategy Paul Michael Wihbey co-authored an analysis …
