Wilce draws our attention to the formulaic nature of anthropologists ethnographies, both considered as a distinctive genre and as inflected by larger modernist discourses of destruction and loss (which he terms neolament). His intriguing discussion of the laments that end many anthropological texts helped me to recognize similar laments that I heard when I conducted interviews in the Piedmont region of North Carolina. The latter examples raise issues about the politics of lamenting modernity and questions about what makes a lament effective.

There is a deeper assumption underlying adoption studies that is often not acknowledged by either adoption study researchers or their critics, and it is an assumptions that is at least as important as the two considered by Richardson and Norgate: the assumption that the heritability statistics generated by adoption studies are informative about something of consequence. Although Richardson and Norgate’s paper presents several valid criticisms of adoption studies of IQ that lead them to suggest a ‘radical reappraisal’ of such studies, a reappraisal even more radical than the one they suggest might, in fact, be warranted.

Autism spectrum disorder has become one of the most prevalent developmental disorders, characterized by a wide variety of symptoms. Many children need extensive therapy for years to improve their behavior and facilitate integration in society. However, few systematic evaluations are done on a large scale that can provide insights into how, where, and how therapy has an impact. We describe how data mining techniques can be used to provide insights into behavioral therapy as well as its effect on participants. Human trafficking in China is a serious problem. According to a 2002 UNICEF estimate, there are approximately 250,000 victims of trafficking in China. Traffickers are increasingly linked to organized crime, and specialize in abducting girls and women, both for the bridal market in China’s poorest areas, and for sale as prostitutes in urban areas. North Korean refugees are an especially vulnerable group.

This report is on work-in-progress and is based on the research and data collection undertaken in the first two phases of the project. These two phases focused on the audit of available secondary data and collection of primary data that were used in preparing the profiles of the 17 communities included in the study. A further analysis of the interview transcripts on the views of other stakeholders will be undertaken. The Kyoto Protocol's Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) is a system by which a developed country can earn carbon emission reduction (ER) credits through an emission-mitigating project undertaken in a developing country. While allowing developed countries to meet their Kyoto Protocol commitments at less cost, CDM benefits the host developing countries with new capital investments and the transfer of clean technologies. In view of the potential supply of ERs on the Philippine side and a pressing demand on Japan's side, this article explores the relatively low level of CDM cooperation between the Philippines and Japan, and suggests ways of moving forward.

Gorillas are one of the many animals throughout the world that are an endangered species. Studies have also shown that, genetically speaking; gorillas are closely related to humans. Because of this it should be a high priority of all people to better understand these creatures and their biology and behavior. Currently the Jacksonville Zoo is home to four male Western Lowland gorillas. These gorillas demonstrate some abnormal behaviors; behaviors that are not seen with regularity in the wild. In this paper we explore the usage of information communication technologies (ICTs) in the proliferation of non-state political violence, and governmental countermeasures to thwart such actions. We are specifically interested in gauging how communication technologies are being adapted to provide such non-state with new terrorist repertoires. To explore this issue, we utilize personal interviews with members of the U.S. government and members of Washington’s IT security community.

The purpose of this study was to examine the differences in caregiver burden and use of coping strategies by gender, ethnicity, relationship to the care-receiver, type of diagnosis and length of caregiving responsibilities. Quantitative data was obtained through a sample survey of 55 random caregivers served by Inland Caregiver Resource Center (ICRC). The study shows the need for agencies to develop education classes and workshops which are based upon different coping strategies as well as caregiver support groups.

Examines the issue of media bias in favor of the Democratic Party during the 2004 Presidential Election. To examine the most far reaching form of media in the United States, this study consisted of the three major television networks (ABC, CBS, NBC) and their weekday nightly newscasts during the entire month of October 2004. Emerging themes and strategies were compared to a study conducted at Sonoma State University of the year's most underreported yet newsworthy events. The thesis examines the O.J. Simpson murder trial and analyzes the racial narratives that affected its outcome and the way it is perceived by the American public. By examining four books about the trial written by lawyers who served on the case, the analysis focuses on how race functions within each of the reconstructed narratives, as well as within the framework of the U.S. criminal justice system. The purpose of this report is to summarize price trends from 1990 to 2005 in vacant land zoned for single family development in the Portland region. While regional housing prices are compiled, tracked, and reported on a regular basis by sources like the Regional Multiple Listing Service (RMLS), information on trends in vacant land sales remains dispersed among independent builders, county assessors, and appraisers. As a consequence, while current and accurate information exits to inform a discussion about regional and local housing policy, relatively limited information exists on which to base discussions of regional and local land policies.
