Gunnar Johansen: The Gentlemanly Dane, Solon Pierce Jan 2006

Gunnar Johansen: The Gentlemanly Dane, Solon Pierce

The Bridge

It is about three score and five years ago now since a certain Dane came to Dane County, Wisconsin-a decisive step, he later recounted on many occasions, "that I have never regretted." To this native Midwestern observer, it was a perfect fit. There was something homespun and authentic in the nature of the man -a sense that he was cut from the same cloth.

Gyde-Petersen, A Skagen Artist In America, John Robert Christianson

The Bridge

Mankato, Minnesota, was thrilled. A famous artist had come to town with his palette, easel, and painter's smock, and people noticed. The Mankato Free Press ran a story under a bold headline:

Sir Gyde Pedersen, Artist of Denmark

The reporter gushed away for two columns on the delight of having in their midst a European artist who had been knighted by a king.1

Of Two Women In Scandinavian-American Immigrant Literature, Mikael Engelstoft Hansen

The Bridge

Neither politics nor traditional history has ever spelled much interest to me. But then I read in Hilde Petra Brungot's dissertation1 on Dorthea Dahl (1881-1958)2 of this Lutheran Norwegian-American immigrant writer being an outspoken Republican.

Hans Christian Andersen Stories, Lisa Kramme Jan 2006

Hans Christian Andersen Stories, Lisa Kramme

The Bridge

During her presentation at the international conference "Danish Culture, Past and Present: The Last Two Hundred Years," Lisa Kramme shared the following stories by Hans Christian Andersen: "The Princess on the Pea," "The Old Man Is Always Right," and "The Little Match Girl." She also shared several tales of the famous people of Mols, but passed them off as stories about her relatives in Denmark.

Building Interoperable Vocabulary And Structures For Learning Objects, Jian Qin, Naybell Hernández Jan 2006

Building Interoperable Vocabulary And Structures For Learning Objects, Jian Qin, Naybell Hernández

School of Information Studies - Faculty Scholarship

The structural, functional, and production views on learning objects influence metadata structure and vocabulary. We drew on these views and conducted a literature review and in-depth analysis of 14 learning objects and over 500 components in these learning objects to model the knowledge framework for a learning object ontology. The learning object ontology reported in this paper consists of 8 top-level classes, 28 classes at the second level, and 34 at the third level. Except class Learning object, all other classes have the three properties of preferred term, related term, and synonym. To validate the ontology, we conducted a query …

The Semantic And Syntactic Model Of Metadata, Jian Qin, Javier Calzada Prado Jan 2006

The Semantic And Syntactic Model Of Metadata, Jian Qin, Javier Calzada Prado

School of Information Studies - Faculty Scholarship

As more information becomes “born digital”, metadata creation is increasingly becoming part of the information creation process. Current metadata schemes inherit much of the library cataloging tradition, which has shown limitations on representing “born digital” type of resources. Through analysis of issues of metadata schemes and review of metadata research and projects, the authors propose an ontology-based approach to building a modular metadata model in which semantics and syntax may be integrated to suit the needs for representing “born digital” resources. The authors use an learning object ontology as an example to demonstrate how the semantics and syntax may be …

Cheap Talk Reconsidered: New Evidence From Cvm, David M. Aadland, Arthur J. Caplan Jan 2006

Cheap Talk Reconsidered: New Evidence From Cvm, David M. Aadland, Arthur J. Caplan

Applied Economics Faculty Publications

Two recent studies have shown that “cheap talk” is an effective means of eliminating positive hypothetical bias in experimental and field-auction settings. We further investigate the ability of cheap talk to mitigate positive hypothetical bias in a contingent-valuation phone survey administered to over 4,000 households. Positive hypothetical bias is detected in our data by contrasting revealed and stated preference information. However, a short, neutral cheap-talk script appears to exacerbate rather than mitigate the bias. Based on this and mixed evidence from earlier studies, we suggest caution in using cheap talk as an ex ante control for hypothetical bias.

Children's Social Behaviors And Peer Interactions In Diverse Cultures, Carolyn P. Edwards, Maria Rosario De Guzman, Jill Brown, Asiye Kumru Jan 2006

Children's Social Behaviors And Peer Interactions In Diverse Cultures, Carolyn P. Edwards, Maria Rosario De Guzman, Jill Brown, Asiye Kumru

Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications

Cultural socialization has long interested behavioral and social scientists, but recent advances in theory and methodology have allowed researchers to construct new and more powerful theoretical frameworks for conceptualizing the complex ways in which children interact with their environments during the course of development. Studies of childhood socialization in the classic tradition of cross-cultural research were static in their approach to analyzing underlying processes because of limitations in the theories and methods available at the time they were conducted. Many studies, for example, involved straightforward associations or comparisons of levels of parental socialization pressure (the antecedent condition) with children's social …

All this work is done by men in the public sphere. In Banaras, the observable and articulated sphere of activity called "work" (kam) largely exists for men only. Men are …

A Historical Perspective: Changes In Grassland Breeding Bird Densities Within Major Habitats In North Dakota Between 1967 And 1992-1993, Lawrence D. Igl, Douglas H. Johnson, Harold A. Kantrud Jan 2006

A Historical Perspective: Changes In Grassland Breeding Bird Densities Within Major Habitats In North Dakota Between 1967 And 1992-1993, Lawrence D. Igl, Douglas H. Johnson, Harold A. Kantrud

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

Population declines of many grassland-nesting birds are now widely recognized. Fundamental to understanding these declines is knowing if they are caused by changes in the availability of suitable habitats or changes in the densities of birds within those habitats. We address that issue with information from systematic surveys of breeding birds throughout North Dakota in 1967, 1992, and 1993. We compared the availability of 8 major habitat types, and the densities of 24 species of grassland birds in each habitat type, for 128 randomly selected quarter-sections (64.7 ha or 160 ac) that were surveyed in each of those years. Between …

Distributions Of Exotic Plants In Eastern Asia And North America, Qinfeng Guo, Hong Qian, Robert E. Ricklefs, Weimin Xi Jan 2006

Distributions Of Exotic Plants In Eastern Asia And North America, Qinfeng Guo, Hong Qian, Robert E. Ricklefs, Weimin Xi

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

Although some plant traits have been linked to invasion success, the possible effects of regional factors, such as diversity, habitat suitability, and human activity are not well understood. Each of these mechanisms predicts a different pattern of distribution at the regional scale. Thus, where climate and soils are similar, predictions based on regional hypotheses for invasion success can be tested by comparisons of distributions in the source and receiving regions. Here, we analyse the native and alien geographic ranges of all 1567 plant species that have been introduced between eastern Asia and North America or have been introduced to both …

Conspecific Attraction In A Grassland Bird, The Baird’S Sparrow, Marissa A. Ahlering, Douglas H. Johnson, John Faaborg Jan 2006

Conspecific Attraction In A Grassland Bird, The Baird’S Sparrow, Marissa A. Ahlering, Douglas H. Johnson, John Faaborg

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

Territorial songbirds generally use song to defend territories and attract mates, but conspecific song may also serve as a cue to attract other male songbirds to a breeding site. Although known to occur in some colonial and forest-associated species, only recently have investigators examined conspecific attraction in grassland species. We used a playback experiment to examine the possible role of conspecific attraction for males searching for potentially suitable breeding habitat in a grassland specialist, the Baird’s Sparrow(Ammodramus bairdii). Experimental playback plots and control plots with similar landscape and vegetation characteristics were established at two sites in North Dakota. …

The Many Faces Of Replication, Douglas Johnson Jan 2006

The Many Faces Of Replication, Douglas Johnson

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

Replication is one of the three cornerstones of inference from experimental studies, the other two being control and randomization. In fact, replication is essential for the benefits of randomization to apply. In addition to ordinary replication, the repetition of treatments within a study, two other levels of replication have been identified. Pseudoreplication, a termed coined by Stuart Hurlbert, generally involves making multiple measurements on experiment units (which is commendable) and treating them as if they reflected independent responses to treatment (which is erroneous). Metareplication is a higher level of replication in which entire studies are repeated. Scientists are too much …

A 3-Decade Dearth Of Deer (Odocoileus Virginianus) In A Wolf (Canis Lupus)–Dominated Ecosystem, Michael Nelson, L. David Mech Jan 2006

A 3-Decade Dearth Of Deer (Odocoileus Virginianus) In A Wolf (Canis Lupus)–Dominated Ecosystem, Michael Nelson, L. David Mech

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

Some 30 y after wolves (Canis lupus) were implicated in decimating wintering white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) in a 3000-km2 area of northeastern Minnesota, wintering deer still have not recolonized the area. From 1976 to 2004, we aerially radio-tracked wolves there during 250 h and recorded 2 deer (in 1985 and 2000) killed or eaten by wolves during February and March. We observed no other deer or deer sign, but regularly observed deer, deer sign and wolf-killed deer in adjacent wolf-pack territories. Although habitat in the study area generally remains poor, some regeneration has taken place, …

Survival Of Adult Female Elk In Yellowstone Following Wolf Restoration, Shaney Evans, L. David Mech, P. J. White, Glen A. Sergeant Jan 2006

Survival Of Adult Female Elk In Yellowstone Following Wolf Restoration, Shaney Evans, L. David Mech, P. J. White, Glen A. Sergeant

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

Counts of northern Yellowstone elk (Cervus elaphus) in northwestern Wyoming and adjacent Montana, USA, have decreased at an average rate of 6–8% per year since wolves (Canis lupus) were reintroduced in 1995. Population growth rates of elk are typically sensitive to variations in adult female survival; populations that are stable or increasing exhibit high adult female survival. We used survival records for 85 radio-collared adult female elk 1–19 years old to estimate annual survival from March 2000 to February 2004. Weighted average annual survival rates were approximately 0.83 (95% CI=0.77–0.89) for females 1–15 years old and …

Estimated Age Structure Of Wolves In Northeastern Minnesota, L. David Mech Jan 2006

Estimated Age Structure Of Wolves In Northeastern Minnesota, L. David Mech

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

Information about population age structures is useful to understand survival rates, longevity, and population turnover. However, little such information is available about wolf (Canis lupus) populations. Mech (1970) estimated age structures of wolf-population age structure from pup:adult ratios applying various demographic assumptions, but no direct information has been published to test his estimate. Mech et al. (1998) aged 94 live wolves darted in Denali National Park and Preserve, Alaska, USA, but the estimates of wolf ages were based on educated guesses because no technique was available for aging live wolves. Since then, Gipson et al. (2000) published criteria …

The Impact Of The Introduction Of Premiums Into A Schip Program, James Marton Jan 2006

The Impact Of The Introduction Of Premiums Into A Schip Program, James Marton

University of Kentucky Center for Poverty Research Discussion Paper Series

This paper examines the introduction of premiums into the SCHIP program in Kentucky. Kentucky introduced a $20 monthly premium for SCHIP coverage for children with family incomes between 151% and 200% of the federal poverty level in December 2003. Administrative data between 2001 and 2004 is used to estimate a Cox proportional hazard model that predicts enrollment duration in this premium-paying category. The results suggest that a premium reduces the length of enrollment and that the effect is much stronger in the first two months after the introduction of the premium. Similar results are not found for the non-premium category.

Incorporating Spirituality Into The Therapeutic Setting: Safeguarding Ethical Use Of Spirituality Through Therapist Self-Reflection, Anna A. Berardi Phd. Jan 2006

Incorporating Spirituality Into The Therapeutic Setting: Safeguarding Ethical Use Of Spirituality Through Therapist Self-Reflection, Anna A. Berardi Phd.

Faculty Publications - Graduate School of Counseling

As various mental health professions are increasingly open to incorporating the client's spirituality into the therapeutic process, therapists now more than ever feel greater freedom to discuss topics that heretofore may have been perceived as off limits. Yet, inviting discussion about a client's spirituality within the context of therapy is fraught with danger due in large part to the subjective nature of such a deeply personal, life changing, and in today's world, political aspect of human experience. This chapter invites the therapist to consider one's ethical obligations to the client before attempting to utilize a client's spirituality as a therapeutic …

Identity Distress And Adjustment Problems In At-Risk Adolescents, Lynn Hernandez, Marilyn J. Montgomery, William M. Kurtines Jan 2006

Identity Distress And Adjustment Problems In At-Risk Adolescents, Lynn Hernandez, Marilyn J. Montgomery, William M. Kurtines

Faculty Publications - Graduate School of Counseling

This study assessed the usefulness of the Identity Distress Scale (IDS), a measure modeled after the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (3rd ed., rev. [DSM–III–R]; American Psychiatric Association, 1987) defined Identity Disorder, by investigating links between identity distress and poor psychological adjustment in at-risk middle adolescents. A significant proportion (16%) met DSM–III–R criteria for Identity Disorder, and 34% met the more liberal criteria for Identity Problems as defined by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (4th ed.; American Psychiatric Association, 1994). Significant associations were found between identity distress and both internalizing and externalizing symptoms. The IDS …
