The Good Governance Agenda Of International Development Institutions, Kerry L. Hofheimer Apr 2006

The Good Governance Agenda Of International Development Institutions, Kerry L. Hofheimer

Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations

International development institutions (IDIs) have increasingly emphasized good governance and democratic reform in the provision of foreign assistance. This is especially apparent with respect to the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), World Bank, European Union (EU), and United States Agency for International Development (USAID). This project describes and explains the good governance and democracy promotion program of each institution.

Previous studies have accounted for IDIs' good governance and democracy promotion in the 1990s in a generalized way. They have taken into consideration external international changes such as the fading of the Cold War and increased global interdependence between the North …

If Your God Has Really Spoken To You… Then All The World Must Hear It: The Discourses Of Revelation And Satire In Salman Rushdie’S The Satanic Verses, Conrad William Apr 2006

If Your God Has Really Spoken To You… Then All The World Must Hear It: The Discourses Of Revelation And Satire In Salman Rushdie’S The Satanic Verses, Conrad William

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

In his essay, “Is Nothing Sacred?”, Salman Rushdie lays out a place for literature as an arena in which various perspectives may interact. He thereby provides a context for the controversy regarding his books, most particularly The Satanic Verses. Despite his claims, however, literature, as Rushdie conceives it, operates not simply as an arena for discourse but similarly as a rule-maker, controlling the discourse which operates within its bounds. The Satanic Verses, in particular, suggests that revelation as it passes through unstable and hybrid human language loses its authority and power to speak purely or dogmatically. In so …

On David Roochnik's Beautiful City: The Dialectical Character Of Plato’S Republic, James Ambury Apr 2006

On David Roochnik's Beautiful City: The Dialectical Character Of Plato’S Republic, James Ambury

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

“Despite appearances to the contrary, especially passages from Book 8, the Republic actually offers a qualified and cautious defense, rather than a resounding condemnation, of democracy. This defense, however, is specifically dialectical” (2). Thus begins David Roochnik’s short but intriguing study of Plato’s Republic, a dialogue long regarded as evidence that Plato was an enemy of democracy. While Socrates adamantly condemns both democracy and the democratic man, Roochnik argues that the Republic as a work is dialectical in character, and only viewed as such can we come to truly grip Plato’s intention when composing it. The Republic, so …

The Reinvention Of Nato, Robert M. Antis Apr 2006

The Reinvention Of Nato, Robert M. Antis

Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations

In 2006, NATO is operating well out of area and conducting missions beyond the collective defense limits of its founding Treaty. NATO increasingly supports humanitarian relief operations, while also engaged in Afghanistan, the Mediterranean, and African crisis spots.

These changes provide the reason to examine the thesis: only if NATO is able to effectively transform will it be able to continue in its role as the primary European security institution. This transformation of the Alliance is a process, and one that could yet come to an untimely conclusion following any crisis. How NATO has adapted so far, and the potential …

John James Audubon & Ornithological Illustration Exhibition, University Libraries--University Of South Carolina Apr 2006

John James Audubon & Ornithological Illustration Exhibition, University Libraries--University Of South Carolina

Rare Books & Special Collections Publications

Among the greatest treasures of the antebellum South Carolina College (now the University of South Carolina) was its set of Audubon's huge double-elephant folio Birds of America, published in parts between 1827 and 1838, and purchased by the South Carolina state legislature for the College. Fewer than 130 complete sets, with all 435 plates, now survive. In addition to its main archival set of Birds of America, USC’s Thomas Cooper Library bas received numerous donations of significant items to its Audubon collections over the years. The exhibition traces the development of bird illustration, to give a context for …

The Importance Of Place: Using Local-Focus Videos To Spark The Sociological Imagination, Elizabeth A. Hoffmann Apr 2006

The Importance Of Place: Using Local-Focus Videos To Spark The Sociological Imagination, Elizabeth A. Hoffmann

Department of Sociology Faculty Publications

Sociologists have documented how important place is in people’s lives. For example, certain places are associated with various emotions, such as triumph, sadness, fear, and contentment (Gieryn 2000). We also know that as people live in a place for more time, they become more attached to it (e.g., Herting et al 1997). Other scholars have shown that the bonds people create between themselves and certain geographic places reframe how certain sites are understood both by those involved and by outsiders (Gupta and Ferguson 1997). These geographic-human bonds shape how people identify themselves and others, and how they understand the issues …
