Adult Attachment As A Risk Factor For Intimate Partner Violence, Christine L. Pearson Apr 2006

Adult Attachment As A Risk Factor For Intimate Partner Violence, Christine L. Pearson

McNair Scholars Research Journal

This study examined the relationship between intimate partner violence and adult attachment in a sample of 35 community couples. Both partners’ attachment anxiety and attachment avoidance were examined simultaneously as predictors of male-perpetrated verbal and physical intimate partner violence. Results from hierarchical regression analyses indicated high levels of female attachment anxiety predicted high levels of male-perpetrated verbal and physical violence. In contrast, male attachment was not predictive of male-perpetrated violence. These findings suggest for females, fear of abandonment and rejection may be a risk factor for becoming a victim of violence. Alternatively, exposure to violence may contribute to the development …

Capital Campaign To Mark Clags's 15th Anniversary, Paisley Currah Apr 2006

Capital Campaign To Mark Clags's 15th Anniversary, Paisley Currah

Center for LGBTQ Studies (CLAGS)

It may seem hard to believe, but when the new year rolled in, CLAGS turned 15. In 1991, CLAGS opened as the first university-based research center for what was then called "lesbian and gay studies" in the US. It's been a heady, infectiously exciting, and sometimes contentious 15 years.

Workplace Incivility And The Low-Status Target, Sonia Winhorst Apr 2006

Workplace Incivility And The Low-Status Target, Sonia Winhorst

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The goal of the present research was to discover if employees in low-status social groups (i.e., women, people of color, sexual minorities, and non-Christians) experience more incivility in the workplace compared to their high-status counterparts. Data come from four different samples of working adults: employees from a property management company (N = 90), employees of a northwestern university (N = 1,843), a national sample of law school faculty (N = 1,256), and employed students from a southern university (N = 243). Participants in all studies completed measures of demographics and personal experiences of incivility at work. A series of t-tests …

Ivibrate: Interactive Visualization Based Framework For Clustering Large Datasets, Keke Chen, Ling Liu Apr 2006

Ivibrate: Interactive Visualization Based Framework For Clustering Large Datasets, Keke Chen, Ling Liu

Kno.e.sis Publications

With continued advances in communication network technology and sensing technology, there is astounding growth in the amount of data produced and made available through cyberspace. Efficient and high-quality clustering of large datasets continues to be one of the most important problems in large-scale data analysis. A commonly used methodology for cluster analysis on large datasets is the three-phase framework of sampling/summarization, iterative cluster analysis, and disk-labeling. There are three known problems with this framework which demand effective solutions. The first problem is how to effectively define and validate irregularly shaped clusters, especially in large datasets. Automated algorithms and statistical methods …

Mine Risk Education Strategic Plan - 2006 - Cambodia, Gichd

Global CWD Repository

This document was prepared taking into consideration the current mine/UXO accident rate in the Kingdom of Cambodia. It also takes account of the Prime Minister’s address to the nation on the occasion of Mine Awareness Day 2006, during which he re-iterated the ultimate goal of mine action in Cambodia - to achieve Zero Victims by 2012. This mine risk education strategic plan is designed to help achieve that goal. As agreed by the MRE Technical Working Group, this strategic plan will be reviewed every 2 years to ensure it remains in line with the evolution of mine action in Cambodia.

Nixi: A Case Study Of The Influences Of China’S Economic Development On The Fringe Of Tibet, Zachary Johnson Apr 2006

Nixi: A Case Study Of The Influences Of China’S Economic Development On The Fringe Of Tibet, Zachary Johnson

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

On the eastern mountainside of Nixi cling several tall, red earthen houses, the winding road to Deqin cuts between; they face a swell in the middle of the valley where several more houses stand, and one in mid-construction. The two clusters of beautiful Tibetan houses are connected by a fairly recently added crushed stone road, walled in by rough stonework patched with cement. The village is surrounded by evergreens and blossoming mountain laurels. To the north the green mountains are staggered until they slowly fade into pale blue creases humbled by a high snowcapped range at the Tibetan border. To …

Decision Modeling: Why Farmers Do Or Do Not Convert To Organic Farming, Ryan Locke Apr 2006

Decision Modeling: Why Farmers Do Or Do Not Convert To Organic Farming, Ryan Locke

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

This study examines why farmers in Northern New South Wales, Australia do or do not convert to organic farming from conventional farming practices. Organic agriculture provides a production alternative that may be environmentally and nutritionally beneficial. Because the structural settings of economy and society influence decision-making on an individual basis at the farm level, discussions of policy must consider why farmers do, or do not, convert to organic farming. Ultimately, the successfulness of a policy depends on the effectiveness of motivating individual action. A hierarchical decision tree was created using ethnographic decision tree modeling. Elimination criteria, motivational criteria, and constraints …

Contemporary Art In Samoa: The Role Of Personal Expression, Christina Cioffari Apr 2006

Contemporary Art In Samoa: The Role Of Personal Expression, Christina Cioffari

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Contemporary art is a means of creating and recreating the self, a means of self reflection and defining ones identity. Conceptual art that expresses personal ideas and emotions plays a small role in the arts of Samoa, however it does exist in the minds and galleries of a few individuals. The intention of this study is to examine the role that personal expression plays in Samoan society and the artwork created here. The attitudes and approaches to contemporary art was explored, in addition to the underlying causes of those perceptions.

The foundation of this paper evolved out of statements from …

Development, Civil Society And The Conflict In Nepal, Shan Rehman Apr 2006

Development, Civil Society And The Conflict In Nepal, Shan Rehman

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

For more than two decades now, scholars such as Etienne Balibar and Antonio Negri have argued the ‘total subsumption of capital’; there remains no ‘outside’- all aspects of social life are governed by commodities and wage labor. This process, given impetus by the processes commonly referred to as economic globalization or market liberalization, also came to be synonymous with ‘development’. Imperfect markets, the widely implemented ‘Washington Consensus’ package of economic policies further implied, were far better social mechanisms than imperfect states.

The study and practice of ‘development’ worldwide, however, is in flux. Critiques of the mainstream ‘development’ project, widely implemented …

War Over Water: Water, Poverty, And Conflict, Tyker Mcmahon Apr 2006

War Over Water: Water, Poverty, And Conflict, Tyker Mcmahon

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

The theme of this paper is; “What else would you do with 500 million dollars?” In a country as small and diverse as Nepal, with many immediate needs, are large scale projects really the answer at the present time? The stage that this paper will be set in is the 1990’s during the democracy and the beginning of the Maoist insurgency. Also, happening during this time was the pursuit of several large-scale projects like the Mahakali Treaty and the Melamchi Water Delivery Project. These both involved projects that would potentially bring large benefits but were also fraught with uncertainties relating …

Reproducing Social Identities: Employer-Employee Relationships Within Paid Domestic Labor In The Netherlands, Melissa Macdonald Apr 2006

Reproducing Social Identities: Employer-Employee Relationships Within Paid Domestic Labor In The Netherlands, Melissa Macdonald

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

My independent study project analyzes how through employer relationships with their domestic workers, whether maternalism, personalism, distant hierarchy, or business relationship, social statuses and structural inequalities are reproduced within paid domestic labor in the Netherlands. Using Pei-Chia Lan’s concept of “boundary work” and Mary Romero’s employer typologies as theoretical tools I analyzed four interviews with native Dutch, female employers, and three with immigrant domestic workers. Along with providing an overview of paid domestic work within the Netherlands, my analysis focused employers perceptions of the “Other;” conceptualization of personal relationships, and conceptualization of labor relationships. This research found that employers fell …

The Development Of Bilingual Education In Berlin’S Primary Schools, Elizabeth Buckley Apr 2006

The Development Of Bilingual Education In Berlin’S Primary Schools, Elizabeth Buckley

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

The debate on language education is flourishing in the current state of globalization and immigration. The rising amount of globalization has increased the amount of linguistic diversity present in one’s everyday life. There are between 6,000 and 7,000 languages in the world and half of them are in danger of disappearing. Therefore, it is becoming more common for the presence of many different linguistic groups within one country. For instance, in Indonesia, there are over 700 languages spoken. Although, the distribution of languages is not equal, it is nearly impossible to go through life without being exposed to another language …

El Movimiento Político Mapuche: Factores De División Y Debilidad E Ideas Para El Futuro, Devon Kay Whitham Apr 2006

El Movimiento Político Mapuche: Factores De División Y Debilidad E Ideas Para El Futuro, Devon Kay Whitham

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

This study explores the Mapuche political movement in Chile since the military dictatorship. It asserts that the movement is more divided and weak presently than it was during the dictatorship because at that time all sectors of the Mapuche society were able to unite in order to fight against a common and concrete enemy. However, since the return of democracy in Chile the Mapuche political movement has experiences a process of fragmentation that has weakened it greatly. This study identifies the five most important factors that have contributed to the process of fragmentation within the movement—the diversity of opinions within …

Luta: The Story Of The Movimento Dos Atingidos Por Barragens In The Valley Of Jaguaribe, Rachel Wood

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

This is a paper about communities of share-croppers, landless families, and often-illiterate subsidence farmers who organized themselves to fight for their human rights after they were displaced by a dam. By organizing themselves with the national Movimento dos Atingidos por Barragens, they were able overcome their marginalized position and demand changes that would protect their culture, protect their community, give them better access to education, access to work, and access to safe drinking water. What’s more, they are fighting for their right to participate in politics and in decisions about their own lives, and by promoting participation, promoting education, and …

Cubans In Costa Rica: A Collection Of Life Stories, Adriana Solis Black Apr 2006

Cubans In Costa Rica: A Collection Of Life Stories, Adriana Solis Black

McNair Scholars Research Journal

This ethnographic essay examines the experiences of Cuban immigrants living in Costa Rica. The study aims to examine the degree of adjustment, adaptation, integration and/or assimilation of Cubans living in the small city of San Isidro del General in southern Costa Rica. This group represents a minor body of immigrants for whom Costa Rica serves as a country of first asylum and potentially as their new, adoptive homeland. Some major theoretical considerations and analytic themes that emerge out of this work are the issues of immigrant identity through the displaced people’s perspective; issues of separation from one culture and introduction …

Detecting The Change Of Clustering Structure In Categorical Data Streams, Keke Chen, Ling Liu Apr 2006

Detecting The Change Of Clustering Structure In Categorical Data Streams, Keke Chen, Ling Liu

Kno.e.sis Publications

Analyzing clustering structures in data streams can provide critical information for making decision in real time. In this paper, we present a framework for detecting the change of critical clustering structure in categorical data streams. The framework consists of the Hierarchical Entropy Tree structure (HE-Tree) and the extended ACE clustering algorithm. HE-Tree can efficiently capture the entropy property of the categorical data streams and allow us to draw precise clustering information from the data stream for high-quality BkPLots with the extended ACE algorithm.

Does Diving Limit Brain Size In Cetaceans?, Lori Marino, Daniel Sol, Kristen Toren, Louis Lefebvre Apr 2006

Does Diving Limit Brain Size In Cetaceans?, Lori Marino, Daniel Sol, Kristen Toren, Louis Lefebvre

Veterinary Science and Medicine Collection

We test the longstanding hypothesis, known as the dive constraint hypothesis, that the oxygenation demands of diving pose a constraint on aquatic mammal brain size.Using a sample of 23 cetacean species we examine the relationship among six different measures of relative brain size, body size, and maximum diving duration. Unlike previous tests we include body size as a covariate and perform independent contrast analyses to control for phylogeny. We show that diving does not limit brain size in cetaceans and therefore provide no support for the dive constraint hypothesis. Instead, body size is the main predictor of maximum diving duration …

Portland Public Schools Enrollment Forecast, 2006-2015, Based On October 2005 Enrollments, Portland State University. Population Research Center, Risa S. Proehl, Vicky Buelow, Kenneth Radin, George C. Hough Jr., Charles Rynerson

School District Enrollment Forecast Reports

The Population Research Center has prepared district-wide and individual school Enrollment Forecasts for the Portland Public Schools (PPS) for the past 7 years. This year’s forecast relies on October 2005 PPS enrollment figures. It considers several factors that are likely to affect the school district's enrollments between the October 2005 and 2015, including the future number of births, net migrants, and the proportion of school-age children and youth enrolled in the public schools. The forecasts do not take into account local factors such as changing school programs or future school reorganizations that may have a significant effect on an individual …

Analysis Of The Fly Creek Kiln Site (1ba226) Ceramic Assemblage, Miranda Cleveland Apr 2006

Analysis Of The Fly Creek Kiln Site (1ba226) Ceramic Assemblage, Miranda Cleveland

Anthropology Undergraduate Senior Theses

This thesis is an investigation of the ceramic assemblage recovered from the Fly Creek Kiln site (1BA226) in Fairhope, Alabama. This large assemblage was recovered from limited excavations in a waster pile and provides insight into the range of vessel forms manufactured at the site, as well as the technological process of salt-glaze ceramic manufacture in the nineteenth century along the Eastern Shore of Mobile Bay. In order to place the site in context, the history of designs and firing methods used by nineteenth-century potters in the southeastern United States are reviewed. The Fly Creek Kiln site is compared with …

Impacts Of Salt Production On Pemba, Lauren Wolchok Apr 2006

Impacts Of Salt Production On Pemba, Lauren Wolchok

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

The economic, social, and environmental impacts of salt production were studied on the eastern coast of Pemba Island. Solar salt production is associated with the clear cutting of mangrove forests, which are significant as soil stabilizers, animal habitats, and as an economic resource. An environmental assessment of this industry is necessary to determine whether the socio-economic gains from salt production justify the environmental costs. Interviews with owners, employees, and day laborers from 20 salt farms were conducted to assess the general sustainability of the industry. The average annual owner income was determined to be approximately 570 000 Tsh, while employees …

A Promising Start In An Arid Region: Assessment Of The Anaqeed Al-Khair Cooperative’S Impact, Jason Shenk

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

In light of increased use of cooperatives by the Jordanian government and the sparseness of in-depth impact assessments, this study seeks to investigate the Anaqeed Al-Khair's impact on livelihoods in terms of income flows, vulnerability, and quality of life as well as analyzing the distribution of impacts based on degree of need, membership status, and gender. Working within the framework of the sustainable livelihoods approach, the study is based on qualitative research using participatory monitoring and evaluation guidelines. Findings include that cooperative projects are valuable for their impact on participants and demonstration of new viable livelihood strategies, but the benefits …

El Arte Ngöbe De La Chácara: Su Significado Cultural Y Potenciál Financiero En Una Asociación De Artesanas, Danica Taber

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

This study investigates the role played by traditional, plant-derived bags known as “chácaras” or “kra” in the Ngöbe indigenous culture of Panamá, with a focus on the market for chácaras as experencied by a Ngöbe women’s artesanal association.

Chácaras have played an integral and versatile part in the lives of the Ngöbe for centuries, functioning to carry heavy loads of bananas, cradle babies while they sleep, and everything in between. However, in recent decades the previously isolated Ngöbe culture has experienced exposure to mainstream Latino culture, resulting in a dwindling cultural regard for chácaras and traditional Ngöbe culture as a …
