Bud Selig And Steroids, Richard C. Crepeau Apr 2006

Bud Selig And Steroids, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

It is spring. Time of optimism and renewal. The flowers are in bloom. Spring training is over. Opening day of another baseball season is upon us. Everyone is in first place. Dreams of pennants in October are yet to be crushed. What possibly could dampen the mood as another baseball season opens? In so many ways it is the best time of year. Could it possibly last?

Walt Whitman: Nineteenth-Century Popular Culture, Brett Barney Apr 2006

Walt Whitman: Nineteenth-Century Popular Culture, Brett Barney

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Faculty Publications

Scholarship that traces connections between Whitman and so-called “subliterary” forms is valuable, as it makes us more competent readers, better equipped to navigate the allusive terrain of Whitman’s writing and to assess Whitman’s achievements in historical context. This essay will, in part, contribute to the growing “inventory” of Whitman’s affinities with currently devalued literary and social forms. In addition, though, I will attempt to redress the problem of anachronism that exists in current scholarship on Whitman and popular culture, exploring his literary career in the context of contemporaneous nineteenth-century understandings of culture. Lawrence Levine has pointed out that to define …

Foreign Direct Investment And Economic Growth: A Time-Series Approach, Atrayee Ghosh Roy, Hendrik F. Van Den Berg Apr 2006

Foreign Direct Investment And Economic Growth: A Time-Series Approach, Atrayee Ghosh Roy, Hendrik F. Van Den Berg

Department of Economics: Faculty Publications

Research has often focused on how foreign direct investment (FDI) transfers technology from developed economies to less developed economies. Most FDI occurs between developed economies, however, and the country receiving the greatest inflow of FDI is the United States. This paper examines whether such FDI inflows have stimulated growth of the U.S. economy. We apply time-series data to a simultaneous-equation model (SEM) that explicitly captures the bi-directional relationship between FDI and U.S. economic growth. FDI is found to have a significant, positive, and economically important impact on U.S. growth. Also, our SEM estimates reveal that FDI growth is income inelastic. …

Plant Supply Logistics: Balancing Delivery And Stockout Costs, Jennifer A. Pope, James A. Pope Apr 2006

Plant Supply Logistics: Balancing Delivery And Stockout Costs, Jennifer A. Pope, James A. Pope

Journal of Transportation Management

A manufacturer leases rail cars to transport raw material from the supplier to the factory. The manufacturer must balance the costs of leasing rail cars versus stockouts (leading to plant closings) and inventory carrying costs. Using a model of circular queues and a simulation, the cost implications of leasing different numbers of rail cars are analyzed. It is concluded that stockout costs exceed the cost of excess inventory and capacity in the logistics system.

Water And The Treaty Of Peace Between Israel And Jordan, Maya Manna

Macro Center Working Papers

The Treaty of Peace between the State of Israel and the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan was signed at the southern border crossing of Wadi Araba on October 26, 1994. It symbolized one of the world’s most famous water – sharing agreements – in addition to making Jordan the only Arab country after Egypt to normalize relations with Israel. The Jordanian – Israeli Peace Treaty is part of the efforts towards joint management of water resources.

The Impact Of New Deal Expenditures On Mobility During The Great Depression, Price V. Fishback, William C. Horrace, Shawn Kantor Apr 2006

The Impact Of New Deal Expenditures On Mobility During The Great Depression, Price V. Fishback, William C. Horrace, Shawn Kantor

Economics - All Scholarship

Using county-level data on federal New Deal expenditures on public works and relief and Agricultural Adjustment Administration payments to farmers, this paper empirically examines the New Deals impact on inter-county migration from 1930 to 1940. We construct a net-migration measure for each county as the difference between the Censuss reported population change from 1930 to 1940 and the natural increase in population (births minus infant deaths minus non-infant deaths) over the same period. Our empirical approach accounts for both the simultaneity between New Deal allocations and migration and the geographic spillovers that likely resulted when economic activity in one county …

A Report On Accessibility Of Polling Places In The November 2005 Election: The Experience Of New York City Voters, José Cruz, Prepared In Collaboration With The National Association Of Latino Elected And Appointed Officials

Policy Documents

To ensure that that such polling places in the November 8, 2005 New York City Mayoral Election were accessible to all voters, the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO) Educational Fund in partnership with the New York Latino Research and Resources Network (NYLARNet) at the University at Albany, State University of New York, conducted an Election Day project to observe the accessibility of poll sites. For this observational study, the Brooklyn and Queens boroughs were chosen as field sites. Intellectual Scaffolding: On Peter Dahlgren's Theorization Of Television And The Public Sphere, Minna Aslama Apr 2006

Intellectual Scaffolding: On Peter Dahlgren's Theorization Of Television And The Public Sphere, Minna Aslama

McGannon Center Working Paper Series

In this working paper, my goal is to revisit Habermasian public sphere theory by first discussing its strengths and weaknesses in the context of today’s (western European) television landscape. I then move on to exploring one reconceptualization of television as a public sphere, that of the Swedish scholar Peter Dahlgren (1995 & 2005). Finally, I elaborate and further develop those key aspects of Dahlgren’s model that I consider particularly relevant for rethinking the public sphere of today.

Pure Pallets: Effectiveness And Efficiency Impacts On The Defense Transportation System, Michael B. Mongold, Alan W. Johnson Apr 2006

Pure Pallets: Effectiveness And Efficiency Impacts On The Defense Transportation System, Michael B. Mongold, Alan W. Johnson

Journal of Transportation Management

The military supply chain must explore initiatives to improve its ability to meet warfighter needs. One initiative, developed during operations in Afghanistan and Iraq is the pure pallet process—by consolidating material early in the supply chain into user-specific pallets, these pallets are able to transit the defense transportation system without being broken down en route, theoretically arriving to the warfighter in less time than prior break-bulk methods required. The pure pallet initiative’s effectiveness and efficiency was assessed by measuring customer requisition wait time, cargo throughput, and revenue performance. It was found that effectiveness increased, without corresponding losses in efficiency.

Breathing Easier About Air Quality, Joel Schwartz Apr 2006

Breathing Easier About Air Quality, Joel Schwartz

Center for Applied Economics

Most people associate air pollution with automobiles and factories. But air pollution has been a part of human existence for thousands of years, and accounts of noxious urban air go back to ancient times. The Roman statesman Seneca bemoaned, “the stink, soot, and heavy air” of Rome in 61 AD.1 London has suffered from air pollution since the Middle Ages, when coal became a common fuel in smithies and lime burners. The problem was bad enough that King Edward I in 1285 created a commission to improve the city’s air quality.2

Today, despite vast increases in energy production, motorized transportation, …
