Tragic Accidents Or Mysterious Murders?: A College Town Struggles To Frame Responsibility For River Drowning Deaths, Douglas J. Swanson
Tragic Accidents Or Mysterious Murders?: A College Town Struggles To Frame Responsibility For River Drowning Deaths, Douglas J. Swanson
Journalism
This paper focuses on an ongoing debate in La Crosse, Wisconsin, over recent river drowning incidents involving college-aged men. While some in the community contend the deaths were tragic but unrelated, other citizens argue that the collective set of circumstances points to a series of mysterious murders – perhaps committed by a “River Killer” that local authorities are unable or unwilling to bring to justice. An examination of local newspaper narratives and claims from a televised town meeting shows the narratives resulted in establishment of two contrasting frames. Each offers a different explanation and has a different perspective of responsibility …

The Role Of Professional Women In Pakistani Society, Sarah Husain
The Role Of Professional Women In Pakistani Society, Sarah Husain
Honors Theses
This paper attempts to outline key factors that negatively affect women in Pakistan, including poverty, lack of education, and gender discrimination. First, I will use data that shows the underlying economic problems prevalent there. I will also use information gathered from the interviews that describes how professional women are advocating for positive change in the social structure of the country. Thirdly, I will discuss the role of NGO's in assisting the plight of Pakistani women. Lastly, I will examine the role of religion and how it affects the values of the general public in regard to women.

"Loss Of Estrus" And Concealed Ovulation In Human Evolution: A Reevaluation., Joshua S. Wagener '06
"Loss Of Estrus" And Concealed Ovulation In Human Evolution: A Reevaluation., Joshua S. Wagener '06
Honors Projects
Accounts ofhuman evolution tend to highlight a number ofsignificant characteristics as critical in defining humanity including bipedalism (Jolly 1970, Lovejoy 1981, Wheeler 1984), enlarged brains (Falk 1990, Foley 1996), hairlessness (Morris 1963, Schwartz and Rosenblum 1980), and language (pinker and Bloom 1990, Dunbar 1996). Less frequently, scholars have focused on the unique aspects of human sexuality. In this paper, I seek to demonstrate that sexual swellings are not the norm among alloprimates and that the prevailing absence ofestrus among female humans is better viewed as a derived trait which is no more unique than that of any other primate. As …

The NebCAST program will enable directors and managers of any cooperative to assess the effects of their equity management decisions on the organization and its members in a manner consistent with the decision-making processes cooperatives typically follow. NebCAST, which stands for University of Nebraska–Lincoln Extension Cooperative Analytical Simulation Tool, was developed by Darrell R. Mark, Jeffrey S. Royer, and Rik R. Smith of the UNL Department of Agricultural Economics.
The Democratization Of Spain: The Role Of Consensus And Moderation, Meghan Sifuentes
The Democratization Of Spain: The Role Of Consensus And Moderation, Meghan Sifuentes
Honors Theses
The Spanish transition to democracy is justly deemed a success story due to the relative fluidity of the process, the non-violent means in which Spain was able to consolidate, and the stability of the democratic system over the last quarter of a decade. Particularly noteworthy to Spain's success at democratic consolidation was the history and events that preceded its foundation. The failures of Spain's previous attempt at a democratic state, the brief and chaotic Second Republic (1931-36), gave rise to the Spanish Civil War, a costly and bloody conflict that polarized a nation. The Civil War in turn gave birth …

The Chipped Stone Tool Industries Of Blackman Eddy, Belize, Matthew Patrick Yacubic
The Chipped Stone Tool Industries Of Blackman Eddy, Belize, Matthew Patrick Yacubic
Theses and Dissertations
One of the most significant finds at the site of Blackman Eddy, Belize, is a series of superimposed structures that date between 1200 B.C.-A.D. 600 (calibrated). Because it was continuously occupied for over 1800 years, this site provides a unique opportunity to examine long-term socio-economic changes in the eastern Maya lowlands. This thesis is a diachronic study of the chipped stone tool artifacts of Blackman Eddy using technological, attribute, and use-wear analysis. The data collected for this study were examined to see what types of raw materials were used in tool production, what types of tools were produced, how they …

What Do Academic Library Deans Do?, Mark Y. Herring
What Do Academic Library Deans Do?, Mark Y. Herring
Dacus Library Faculty Publications
A recent discussion apropos of nothing set me to a thought-experiment: what is it deans of library services (or, as it often the case when I’m introduced, deans of library sciences) do? If one were to write up a short list of some of the most important general attributes of an effective dean, what would they be?
Self-Appraisal Decisions Evoke Dissociated Dorsal-Ventral Ampfc Networks, Taylor W. Schmitz, Sterling C. Johnson
Self-Appraisal Decisions Evoke Dissociated Dorsal-Ventral Ampfc Networks, Taylor W. Schmitz, Sterling C. Johnson
Brain and Mind Institute Researchers' Publications
The anterior medial prefrontal cortex (aMPFC) is consistently active during personally salient decisions, yet the differential contributory processes of this region along the dorsal-ventral axis are less understood. Using a self-appraisal decision-making task and functional magnetic resonance imaging, we demonstrated task-dependent connectivity of ventral aMPFC with amygdala, insula, and nucleus accumbens, and dorsal aMPFC connectivity with dorsolateral PFC and bilateral hippocampus. These aMPFC networks appear to subserve distinct contributory processes inherent to self-appraisal decisions, specifically a dorsally mediated cognitive and a ventrally mediated affective/self-relevance network. © 2005 Elsevier Inc.
