An Empirical Test Of The Situational Leadership® Model In Japan, Riho Yoshioka May 2006

An Empirical Test Of The Situational Leadership® Model In Japan, Riho Yoshioka

Public Affairs Theses - Archive

Since the collapse of the "bubble economy" in the early 1990s, Japanese companies have been struggling with financial difficulty, and have been forced to change their structure, strategies, and management systems. The trend of learning and importing successful American management theories and systems expanded to Japanese society. The Situational Leadership® model, developed by Hersey and Blanchard, is an example of this phenomenon. However, many cross-cultural studies propose that Japanese society has a different culture and values from American society. Therefore, by focusing on Situational Leadership®, this study examined whether models developed in the United States are suitable for Japanese companies. …

So Close And So Small: Six Promising Approaches To Civic Education, Equity, And Social Justice, Debbie Abilock

Civic Engagement

Perhaps you feel, as I did when I worked in a school, that while teachers develop service projects with the best intentions, they make no effort to build on what is known about effective service learning, nor do they align their work with other service in the school. As a result, my school was full of feel-good, superficial activities and little curricular coherence.

Planning Cities For The Other Percent Of The Residents: Impacts On The Elderly And Disabled Community, Kellie D. Foster May 2006

Planning Cities For The Other Percent Of The Residents: Impacts On The Elderly And Disabled Community, Kellie D. Foster

Public Affairs Theses - Archive

The urban environment has evolved in the time since the Second World War. Advances in technology have been a catalyst for numerous urban problems; urban sprawl, poverty and a shortage of low to moderate-income housing, for example. When addressing these issues, city planners often neglect the needs of the disabled community. This is cause for concern because society is aging and due to advancements in medicine, the disabled population is growing exponentially. The focus of this thesis is the roll urban design and city planning has in the issues that plague the disabled community by examining both physical design and …

Monsters We Become: The Development Of The Inhuman Narrative Voice, Jeff Lacy May 2006

Monsters We Become: The Development Of The Inhuman Narrative Voice, Jeff Lacy

Library Faculty Research

Monsters are usually unsympathetic and senseless, preying on humans without provocation or reason. They are completely Other to humanity. Monsters represent forces of nature or divine wrath-things to which humans are powerless to appeal. Defeating monsters is characteristic of heroes, those who surpass normal human limitations. In the traditional monstrous text, monsters are obstacles for the hero.

In contemporary texts, the tables are turned. Sympathetic yet still Other-ed monsters may represent repressed human desires or marginalized people oppressed by the culture of the "hero." The key difference is that these monsters use language. They tell their side of the story …

Utilizing The Brief Symptom Inventory As A Prediction Tool For Treatment Response In Patients With Serious Mental Illness, Ryan Curtis Dix May 2006

Utilizing The Brief Symptom Inventory As A Prediction Tool For Treatment Response In Patients With Serious Mental Illness, Ryan Curtis Dix

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

Current data suggest that the cost of caring for people with serious mental illness in the United States was 2.64 billion dollars in the years between 1997 and 2004. The proper utilization of these funds is an important consideration if we are to successfully address the needs of this population. To maximize the use of mental health funds, the provider must quickly identify effective and efficient treatments. Assessment can facilitate the screening process and subsequent treatment decisions. For that reason, my research question addresses the issue of effective screening measures notably the Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI) in predicting movement through …

Sensual Vitalities: Noncorporeal Modes Of Sensing And Knowing In Native Amazonia, Fernando Santos-Granero May 2006

Sensual Vitalities: Noncorporeal Modes Of Sensing And Knowing In Native Amazonia, Fernando Santos-Granero

Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America

Yanesha people of eastern Peru would agree with Aristotle and St. Thomas Aquinas that knowledge can only be achieved through sense perception. They would, however, disagree on what exactly “sense perception” means. In the Western tradition the senses are considered to be the “physiological” modes of perception. We can only know, it is asserted, through the body and its senses: sight, hearing, smell, touch, and taste. In contrast, Yanesha people view bodily senses as imperfect means of knowing, unable to grasp the true, spiritual dimension of the world. Only one of the noncorporeal components of the self, yecamquëñ or “our …

Matsigenka Corporeality, A Nonbiological Reality: On Notions Of Consciousness And The Constitution Of Identity, Dan Rosengren May 2006

Matsigenka Corporeality, A Nonbiological Reality: On Notions Of Consciousness And The Constitution Of Identity, Dan Rosengren

Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America

Departing from the specific case of Matsigenka people in the Montaña of southeastern Peru, this article challenges some of the assumptions associated with predominant conceptions of Amazonian perspectivism. Examining different cultural registers such as birth rituals and mythology, Matsigenka peoples’ notions about being, soul, and self are discussed in relation to the importance that often is ascribed to physical shape for conceptualizing the world. In contrast to this stress on the corporeal, it is argued that Matsigenka people consider the noncorporeal cognizant self to determine outlook and identity. In accordance, corporeal transformation is seen as a result of “the self …

The Strength Of Thoughts, The Stench Of Blood: Amazonian Hematology And Gender, Luisa Elvira Belanunde May 2006

The Strength Of Thoughts, The Stench Of Blood: Amazonian Hematology And Gender, Luisa Elvira Belanunde

Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America

This paper lays the grounds for an Amazonian hematology aiming to unlock the significance of blood with relation to gender, knowledge, and cosmology. Drawing guidance from Overing’s critique of patriarchy theory and her examination of Piaroa understandings of menstruation, it explores cross-cultural ideas about the embodiment and gendering of spirits, thought and strength in the blood, arguing that the flow of blood is conceived of as a relationship, for it transports knowledge to all body parts, both uniting and differentiating men and women, and constituting the hub of a person’s existence throughout his or her lifecycle. Through an examination of …

The Politics Of Shamanism And The Limits Of Fear, Robert Storrie May 2006

The Politics Of Shamanism And The Limits Of Fear, Robert Storrie

Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America

The Hoti are a small group of hunter-horticulturalists living in the highlands of central Venezuelan Guiana. In this article I examine Hoti understandings of equality, hierarchy and power and the coercive use of fear by individuals who cultivate a reputation as “Light Ones”—that is people especially skilled in their interaction with the powerful beings of the shamanic environment—a role that is essential for the safety and fertility of the community. Hoti people are highly egalitarian and anti-hierarchical in their moral understandings and for them all power is ambiguous, and all claims to authority can arouse suspicion. For this reason it …

“Purús Song”: Nationalization And Tribalization In Southwestern Amazonia, Peter Gow May 2006

“Purús Song”: Nationalization And Tribalization In Southwestern Amazonia, Peter Gow

Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America

Starting from a statement about knowledge and power by a Piaroa informant of Joanna Overing, the article analyses two descriptions of a meal on the Purús river in the early twentieth century: a Piro song and a short essay by Euclides da Cunha. Contrasting these two pieces in the context of how the ancestors of the Piro people of today came to meet the famous Brazilian writer, I propose the concepts of “nationalization” and “tribalization” as modes of symbolic action. Nationalization takes local events and escalates them into the space-time of the nation state, while tribalization deactivates the dangerous ramifications …

From the Cache County Study on Memory, Health, & Aging data, a sample of 2,588 women, aged 65 and older gave retrospective occupational history and were screened using the Modified Mini-Mental State Exam at study entry and approximately 3 years later. Non-demented women were used.

Ordinary least squares regression was used cross-sectionally and longitudinally to test the association between cognitive complexity level of the longest job and baseline cognitive status, and rate of cognitive decline over approximately 3 years.

Cross-sectional analysis revealed …

Trusting The Dating Partner In The Face Of Relationship Problems And Uncertainty: The Moderating Role Of Parents And Friends, Rebecca Johnson May 2006

Trusting The Dating Partner In The Face Of Relationship Problems And Uncertainty: The Moderating Role Of Parents And Friends, Rebecca Johnson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Using a sample of 82 college students in dating relationships, this study is an examination of the moderating effect of parents' and friends' approval of the dating relationship on the associations between participants' individual characteristics (age, self-esteem, and own agreeableness) and relationship characteristics (love, ambivalence, conflict, conflict resolution effectiveness, and perception of the partner's agreeableness) with trust. The results of the hierarchical regression analyses showed that approval of the relationship by parents and friends moderated the relationship between individual characteristics and relationship characteristics with trust. Specifically, friends' approval of the relationship moderated the association between self-esteem and age with trust, …

The Effect Of Social Network Disapproval On Partners' Dating Relationship: The Romeo And Juliet Effect Revisited, Rebecca Rawlins May 2006

The Effect Of Social Network Disapproval On Partners' Dating Relationship: The Romeo And Juliet Effect Revisited, Rebecca Rawlins

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

By using online self-report data provided by 41 undergraduate students and their dating partner (N = 82), this study examined the potential curvilinear relationship between four social network sectors (own parents, own friends, partner's parents, and partner's friends) and romantic dating partners' relationship characteristics (perceptions of partner's agreeableness, love, satisfaction, commitment, and ambivalence). After controlling for the effects of age, relationship duration, and social network overlap, the hierarchical regression analyses provided little support for the Romeo and Juliet Effect, that is, the negative association between social network approval and characteristics of the dating relationship. Instead, the study mostly replicated …

Juvenile Drug Courts: Using Participant Characteristics To Predict Outcome, Sara M. Boghosian May 2006

Juvenile Drug Courts: Using Participant Characteristics To Predict Outcome, Sara M. Boghosian

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Juvenile drug courts are becoming an increasingly popular answer to rising rates of substance use-related crime among adolescents in the U.S. However, outcome evidence for the efficacy of juvenile drug courts is limited at this time. Currently, approximately 50% of juvenile drug court participants do not graduate from drug court programs nationwide. However, the nongraduates are believed to have a poor prognosis following termination from drug court. The purpose of this study was to determine if participant characteristics are related to outcome in juvenile drug courts. Neither demographic variables (age, ethnicity, gender, socioeconomic status) nor substance use variables (age at …

New Perspectives On The Relationship Between Emotion Decoding And Social Acceptance In School-Age Children, Eri Suzuki May 2006

New Perspectives On The Relationship Between Emotion Decoding And Social Acceptance In School-Age Children, Eri Suzuki

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The relationship between children's emotion decoding ability and their social acceptance was examined, with a major focus on potential nonlinear components. Based on the display rules literature, the prediction was tested that social acceptance and emotion decoding skills can be best described as an inverted U-shaped function. Children in kindergarten through fifth grade (113 girls and 123 boys) completed measures of postural and facial decoding accuracy (FACES and TALK) and their social acceptance was assessed using child and teacher reports (SPPC or PSPC). The results showed only a statistically significant quadratic relationship for girls and a statistically significant linear relationship …
