War, Shame, And Time: Pastoral Governance And National Identity In England And America, William A. Callahan
War, Shame, And Time: Pastoral Governance And National Identity In England And America, William A. Callahan
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
This essay examines the emergence of national identity in international society through the curious example of “National Humiliation Day,” a special holiday proclaimed by the head of state in wartime and celebrated in local churches throughout the nation. It argues that the observation of humiliation days produces the nation as the sacred political community because it figures both problems and solutions in a “national” time that is radically different from the dynastic and ecclesiastical times that defined medieval Europe. Unlike those who suggest that the Peace of Westphalia instituted a dramatic shift to an international system of secular states, the …
State Ui Job Search Rules And Reemployment Services, Christopher J. O'Leary
State Ui Job Search Rules And Reemployment Services, Christopher J. O'Leary
Journal Articles
This article examines whether unemployment insurance (UI) requirements pertaining to job searches and UI mechanisms connecting claimants with reemployment services tend to shorten the duration of those claimants' insured unemployment. Evidence is presented from a 2003 National Association of State Workforce Agencies survey of all State UI programs. Also presented is evidence about the effect of State UI policies and reemployment assistance on the duration of insured unemployment. Although the sizes of the estimated impacts differ, the consistent finding is that both UI work search requirements and UI reemployment services tend to shorten claimants' duration of insured unemployment by speeding …

After The Party, Is There A Cure For The Hangover? The Challenges Of The Global Economy To Westphalian Sovereignty, Jackson N. Maogoto, Andrew Coleman
ExpressO
Nation-States and their authority referred to here as national sovereignty is under threat from forces within the global economy. Although globalisation is considered to be a recent phenomenon that has now attracted the attention of writers, its origins lie with those of the nation-state as the nation-state clawed its way to dominate the international community. Nation-states achieved their pre-eminence and dominance of the international community on the backs of free enterprise and capitalism; and now this dependence threatens their very existence. Now belatedly nation-states are attempting to regulate the global economy through the IMF and the World Bank and other …

Who is the Christian Right? What, if any influence does this movement have on the Presidency of the United States and Congress with regard to foreign policy decision making in the Middle East. This study …

An Ecological Momentary Assessment Of Retrospective Memory Accuracy In Patients With Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Andrew T. Gloster
An Ecological Momentary Assessment Of Retrospective Memory Accuracy In Patients With Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Andrew T. Gloster
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Numerous studies have demonstrated the pervasiveness of inaccuracies in patients’ retrospective recall of their symptoms (e.g., Stone, Broderick, Shiffman, & Schwartz, 2004). Assessment methods that rely heavily on retrospective recall may lead to faulty clinical inferences should a patient’s recall be biased or inaccurate. Despite lingering concerns about the accuracy of retrospective recall in a variety of clinical and nonclinical populations, investigators have not studied individuals diagnosed with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). This is troubling given findings from laboratory studies that OCD patients may have deficits in episodic memory (Muller & Roberts, 2005). This study investigated memory accuracy in OCD patients …
