The current research was designed to examine the associations between married partners' personalities and their marital satisfaction. The major goal of this research was to examine the unique predictive validity of 13 personality traits in an omnibus model in which the effects of all 13 traits were tested simultaneously. The data were analyzed using the Actor-Partner Interdependence Model (APIM), which enabled me to examine the effect of each personality variable (1) as a function of each participant's own trait score (an actor effect), (2) as a function of each participant's partner's trait score (a partner effect), and (3) as a …

Child abuse and neglect is a compelling phenomenon that has been attributed to a multitude of factors including maternal substance abuse. A significant number of the women involved with the child welfare system for child abuse or neglect are found to have issues due to substance abuse or dependency. In addition, most women involved with child welfare tend to be single and poor women of color. Still, relatively few studies have focused on these women. Abstract

This paper examines the concept of collegiality and how it can be applied to academic libraries. This includes a definition of what collegiality is, a review of the library literature which describes how other writers have seen this issue, and a discussion of how collegiality can be applied in libraries. This includes an examination of how faculty in a library and faculty on other parts of campus work differently which makes collegiality more important in the library. It also looks at why collegiality is important in academic libraries where librarians work hand-in-hand with support staff and student employees.

Abstract

This article profiles a project to expand our general Information Literacy Tutorial into WebCT for students taking online courses. The Tutorial has provided online learners with a grasp of information competencies. The process of the project has confirmed the importance of academic librarians’ collaborative role in distance learning community. It presents both opportunities and challenges for academic librarians to collaborate with faculty and educational technology specialists in integrating information literacy education into the course management system. More active multi-aspect collaborations are required to ensure effective teaching information literacy via the courseware.

Nurturing New Careers: Preparing Future Librarians For Their Careers Through Pre-Professional Development Sessions At The University Of Alabama Libraries, Brett Spencer, Allyson R. Ard

Abstract

We describe a pre-professional development program for library school graduate assistants that helped participants learn career survival skills, gave them an overview of academic librarianship, and encouraged networking. Many intern or graduate assistant programs have focused on primary job training, but we know of few other assistantship programs featuring pre-professional development sessions on career survival skills like writing a CV or crafting a poster session. We discuss the structure, topics, and results of our program and provide suggestions for creating similar programs at other academic libraries.

This is the spiraling inflation in the cost of textbooks. In this status report we discuss issues concerned with textbook costs on campus and the possible roles of the library.

Abstract

Librarians have often led the way in championing Open-Access (OA) journals on the Internet as an alternative to established journal titles that are subscription based. In the discipline of Library and Information Science, all types of journals continue to be published—paper and electronic, subscription-based and free. Using a survey, this article explores how some librarians view OA titles. The article collects suggestions for editors of OA journals. The article also asks questions about the relationship of OA journals to the promotion and tenure process for academic librarians.

OBJECTIVES:

Evaluate the effect of preadmission functional status on severity of pneumonia, length of hospital stay (LOS), and all-cause 30-day and 1-year mortality of adults aged 60 and older and to understand the effect of pneumonia on short-term functional impairment.

DESIGN:

Prospective cohort study.

SETTING:

University hospital.

PARTICIPANTS:

One hundred twelve patients with radiograph-proven pneumonia (mean age 74.6) were enrolled.

MEASUREMENTS:

Functional status and comorbidities were assessed using the Functional Autonomy Measurement System (SMAF) and Charlson Comorbidity Index. Clinical information was used to calculate the Pneumonia Prognostic Index (PPI).

This research examines education and police experience as they relate to police officers' perceptions on the use of in-car mobile video system. A sample of police officers from area police departments in the Dallas Fort Worth Metroplex was studied using a self-administered survey, which consisted of 27 items. The research suggests that there are indeed differences in the perceptions of in-car mobile video system as it relates to police experience.

In this research, the primary caregiver is the person who has responsibility for the care of a mentally-challenged individual. The three main questions examined in this research are: Will caregiver's socioeconomic status be associated with the reported stress level of the caregiver? This qualitative study explores how and to what extent the family responsibilities of single-mother students affect their college experience. In-depth face-to-face interviews were conducted with twelve single-mother students who were enrolled at The University of Texas at Arlington during the spring 2006 semester. Participants consisted of five white women, six black women, and one Mexican American woman, all of whom were upperclassman, varied in academic majors, and ranging from twenty to fifty-eight years of age. Nebraska has historically had a low unemployment rate but the state’s per capita income has also been below the national average. How are rural Nebraskans making a living? How many households have individuals with multiple jobs? Why do individuals hold multiple jobs? How important is agriculture to rural Nebraskans’ families, communities and the state?

This report details 2,482 responses to the 2006 Nebraska Rural Poll, the eleventh annual effort to understand rural Nebraskans’ perceptions. Racial identity has been related to a variety of interpersonal, psychological, behavioral, environmental, and cognitive factors. Although Black racial identity is often researched in relation to career development, there are few studies examining the relationship between career development and White racial identity. Additionally, review of the career development studies that focused on Black racial identity reveals that they have failed to consider the role of social cognitive factors, instead using traditional career models that were created from the standpoint of middleclass non-minorities. College students suffer from more sleep disturbances than the general population. Sleep difficulties in college students can lead to lower levels of performance, memory, and cognitive ability, as well as increased levels of anxiety and decreased levels of well-being. Sleep quality is known to impact individuals' physical and psychological health, which are indicators of well-being. Sleep also appears to influence individuals' choices of coping strategies. Sleep quality is also highly correlated with college students' emotional response to stress. As the prominence of sport in our culture continues to increase, athletes increasingly possess a platform from which to influence the attitudes and opinions of others. In recent years, athletes have used such platforms to make social and political statements and have garnered much attention in doing so. With these instances in mind, the goal of this study was to gain an understanding of some of the social and political attitudes of college athletes. This study explored the construct validity of the Attitudes Toward Diversity Scale (ATDS; Montei et al., 1996) in relation to the Scale of Ethnocultural Empathy (SEE; Wang et al., 2003) and the Miville-Guzman Universality-Diversity Scale (M-GUDS; Miville et al., 1999) in a sample of 157 undergraduate and graduate students at Old Dominion University. Because there was no precedent in the literature, a purely theoretical relationship was hypothesized. The relationship between the SEE and the ATDS v as hypothesized to be stronger than between the M-GUDS and the ATDS. A Cross-Cultural Study Of Epistemological Beliefs And Moral Reasoning Between American And Chinese College Students, Zhongtang Ren

This study investigated the cultural differences of epistemological beliefs and moral reasoning between American and Chinese college students (N=452) recruited from three universities, Old Dominion University in the eastern United States, Luoyang Normal University in the central China and Central University for Nationalities in northern China. A series of factorial MANOVA was conducted to explore the influence of gender, ethnicity and nationality as the independent variables on epistemological beliefs measured with five EBI (Epistemological Beliefs Inventory) scores and moral reasoning measured with two DIT (Defining Issues Test) scores as dependent variables.
