Income differences between men and women psychologists in independent practice have long been noted. Some have suggested that the differences result from the traditional gender roles in household responsibilities and/or gender differences in career decisions have resulted in men and women pursuing different career paths and making different practice decisions that lead to differing incomes. Others explanations regarding income differences suggest that men work more, charge more, and adapt more efficient practice models that reduce overhead. However, no studies have investigated these hypotheses in relation to the practice patterns of independent practitioners. The current study investigated several hypotheses about factors …

This exploratory study tested relationships between information technology sophistication and clinical and financial outcomes of acute care hospitals. The hospital sample was Texas hospitals (N =175) with available data for a profile of their information technology infrastructure, combined with demographic and operations data from public use files for the annual 2002 reporting period. Three measures of information technology sophistication were used: functional, technical, and integration of information, with an additional composite index measure. Clinical outcomes were measured using selected Agency of Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) Patient Safety Indicators and in-hospital mortality. This Master’s project contains an analysis of articles from the Journal of Creative Behavior, 2002. This was the final chapter in a five-year initiative previously analyzed by Bowman-Jones (1999); Moynihan (2001); Noetzel/Schlau (2003); and Carr (2003) for the Journal of Creative Behavior 1998, 1999, 2000 and 2001 respectively. Established schema supplied by Feist and Runco (1993) was the structure for data analysis. Data were collected across five domains: Structural Characteristics; Authorship Patterns; Research Methods; Populations Studied; and Issues in Title and Focus. Considerable evidence exists that many Latin American cultures emphasize concept of simpatia or simpatico (Triandis, Martin, Lisansky, & Betancourt, 1984). The purpose of this research project was to test for evidence that Mexican-Americans use a simpatico self-schema more than White Americans do. Study 1 assessed the participants' reported self-schemas using the "Who am I?" paradigm (Gordon, 1968). As predicted, the Hispanic participants reported significantly more simpatico-related terms in their self-descriptions than the White participants. Study 2 also assessed the self-schema of the participants, using a traditional cognitive paradigm (Markus, 1977). However, none of the predicted hypotheses for that study were …

A Qualitative Examination Of The Psychosocial Adjustment Of Khmer Refugees In Three Massachusetts Communities, Leakhena Nou

This paper uses a sociological stress process model to explore the Khmer adult refugees’ experience in Massachusetts. The analysis is based on the responses of three focus groups in the Khmer communities of Lowell, Lynn, and Revere, Massachusetts. The focus groups provided an in-depth understanding of sources of stress, stress mediators, and psychosocial adjustment/adaptational patterns for Khmer refugees who had experienced the Cambodian genocide. Symptoms and reactions associated with underlying causes of mental health problems had culturally specific relevance to physical illness and mental health.

Traditional rehabilitation services are often assumed to be incompatible with independent living (IL) philosophy, but perhaps rural individuals with disabilities might benefit from a collaboration between Centers for independent living (CILs) and rehabilitation services providers. IL philosophy emphasizes improving opportunities for community participation by people with disabilities.1,2 Ecological models of disability emphasize that community participation results when the environment interacts with a person’s capacity to access that environment.3 Participation may increase if environmental accessibility improves, and/or if the individual’s capacity increases. For people with mobility impairments, technology (e.g. wheelchairs) frequently improves individual capacity. Less frequently, changes in a person’s health …

The Size And Development Of The Shadow Economy: An Empirical Investigation From States Of India, Kausik Chaudhuri, Friedrich Schneider, Sumana Chattopadhyay

Using the state level data from India, this paper investigates the size of the hidden economy in Indian states over the period 1974/75 to 1995/96. Our analysis has shown that after liberalization of the Indian economy in 1991/92, the growth in the size of the hidden economy has decreased on an average. Our results show that the growth in the size of the hidden economy is approximately 4% less in scheduled election years than in all other years. We also demonstrate that the growth is significantly lower in those states where the coalition government is in power. An increased growth …

The No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act of 2001 was enacted to protect the United States' most vulnerable students and was signed into law in January 2002 (U.S. Department of Education, 2002). For many years, black, Hispanic, special education, and limited English proficient students were not achieving at the same level as their white, middle-class counterparts because schools were not held accountable for their individual progress. Research implicates the Anterior Cingulate Cortex (ACC) mediates the affective component of pain processing but not spatial learning. The Posterior Cingulate Cortex (PCC) mediates spatial learning but not pain processes. This study investigated the roles of each cortex in spatial learning and pain processing. Lesions were made using standard stereotaxic procedures on 96 animals. Inflammatory condition was induced via carageenan. Animals were randomly assigned between both MPWT and PEAP followed by Morris Swim Test or vice versa in order to prevent an order effect. As hypothesized, ACC lesioned animals resulted in no spatial learning decrement, but showed no avoidance behavior …

The evolutionary function of gender differences in adult crying was investigated, specifically whether females were selected to cry more than males ostensibly to aid in their survival. Both studies were based on the idea that crying is a signal to others that attention is needed. Study 1 examined how female crying acts as a signal to alert males during a conflict that they have overstepped boundaries, and thus, crying prevents conflict escalation. Experiments utilizing observational learning in dogs are becoming more frequent, but few investigate the familiarity relationship between model and observer. Two experiments were designed to explore the familiarity relationship between conspecifics and heterospecifics. The first experiment utilized a heterospecific-conspecific training dynamic and the conditions of the experiment varied how familiar (familiar or unfamiliar) observing dogs were to the heterospecific and conspecific models. Forty-eight dogs were assigned to four conditions varying in familiarity of the human demonstrator and model dog. This thesis uses content analysis, specifically thematic analysis, to investigate the message boards on Major League Baseball (MLB) teams' Web sites in order to 1) recognize in what ways sports teams' Internet message boards meet the unique gratifications of sports fans; and, 2) identify ways that sports PR practitioners can use Internet message boards for better (more gratifying) communication with sports fans. Consider two agents who learn the value of an unknown parameter by observing a sequence of private signals. The signals are independent and identically distributed across time but not necessarily across agents. We show that that when each agent’s signal space is finite, the agents will commonly learn its value, i.e., that the true value of the parameter will become approximate common-knowledge. In contrast, if the agents’ observations come from a countably infinite signal space, then this contraction mapping property fails. We show by example that common learning can fail in this case.

We show that in almost every economy with separable externalities, every competitive equilibrium can be Pareto improved by a package of anonymous commodity taxes that cause prices to adjust and markets to reclear at different levels of individual consumption. The argument can be extended to economies with strategic interactions, incomplete asset markets or asymmetric information. This constrained suboptimality of competitive allocations might provide a rationale for economic policy in economies with externalities.

Sexual offenders have been identified as a group of criminals who must be monitored even after their release from prison or after completion of parole. This is accomplished by requiring sexual offenders to comply with registration requirements such as checking in with law enforcement agents on a regular basis, providing information on where they are living, working, and going to school, and being placed on a public registry for a period of at least ten years. Hate: Juror Perceptions Of Crime Classification, Attributions Of Blame, And Impact Of Extra-Legal Factors, Karyn M. Plumm

A jury simulation paradigm was employed in this series of studies exploring hate crime. In the first two studies., crime label (i.e., bias-motivated assault ·vs. first degree assault) and victim gender were varied within the context of a sexual orientation motivated (study 1) or gender motivated (study 2) hate crime scenario. Results from the first study indicated that attributions of blame against the victim varied as a function of participants' attitudes toward minority sexual orientation. Results of study two indicated that participants in the assault condition were more likely to find the defendant guilty than those in the hate crime …
