College Student Views On Farming & Ranching Careers, Darrell R. Mark Mar 2005

College Student Views On Farming & Ranching Careers, Darrell R. Mark

Cornhusker Economics

Given the average age of the principal farm operator in Nebraska has increased from 48.5 years in 1982 to 53.9 years in 2002, it would appear that fewer young people have the opportunity or desire to pursue careers in production agriculture. Many agricultural producers and inhabitants of rural communities recognize this trend and often ponder whether it is lack of interest, lack of opportunity or both that cause youth to pursue other careers. Certainly, the highly competitive, capital intensive, lowmargin business that production agriculture has become could be expected to deter many college students from a career in farming or …

A Comparison In Osteological Measurements Of Two Populations From East Tennessee, Corrine Vitek Mar 2005

A Comparison In Osteological Measurements Of Two Populations From East Tennessee, Corrine Vitek

Honors Theses

Forensic anthropology is the identification of skeletal remams in medicolegal death investigations. The foundation of forensic anthropology rests on "documented" skeletal collections, which provide a crucial repository of information from which experts can rely upon to make determinations about human skeletal remains. A "documented" skeletal collection is one in which the demographics (e.g., ancestry, sex, age, height) of each individual are supported by known facts about the decedent at the time of his/her death. A quantitative comparison between the Hamilton County Forensic Center's(HCFC) skeletal collection to the William M. Bass collection housed at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville (UTK) …

Has Technical Communication Arrived As A Profession, Kathy Pringle, Sean Williams Mar 2005

Has Technical Communication Arrived As A Profession, Kathy Pringle, Sean Williams

English Faculty Publications

This article examines the design and technology components of technical communication by investigating how practitioners imagine their work and the profession, specifically with respect to technology. In short, we wanted to interrogate the duality of “core design skills” and “technology skills” by asking practitioners to reflect both on the definition of technical communication and on the role technology plays in their work. We wanted to weigh claims that communication and rhetorical skills are important for success in the field against claims that knowledge of specific tools is likewise vitally important to success in the field. Technical communication historically has been …

Congress, Mcgwire, And Steroids, Richard C. Crepeau Mar 2005

Congress, Mcgwire, And Steroids, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

For those of us who spent a significant part of our professional time and energy in the study of the 1950s, the current hysteria over steroids in the House of Representatives evokes definite historical memories. For some of us it even recalls memories of childhood when "Point of Order Mr. Chairman" was shouted across the schoolyard. This is not to equate the hearings of the House Committee on steroids in baseball, with Sen. Joseph McCarthy's hearings on Communists in government. It is however meant to draw some parallels and raise some questions.

Attributions Others Assign To Depressed Individuals And Their Relationship To Severity Of Depressive Symptoms, Amount Of Contact, And Familiarity With Depressed Individuals, Joan E. Mcdowell Mar 2005

Attributions Others Assign To Depressed Individuals And Their Relationship To Severity Of Depressive Symptoms, Amount Of Contact, And Familiarity With Depressed Individuals, Joan E. Mcdowell

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

While there has been valuable research critical for furthering our understanding of how an individual's social network affects recovery from depression, we need to know more about the interplay of other people's attributions and their relationships with depressed individuals that may impact recovery from the disorder. This research investigated causal and controllability attributions that others assign to individuals with depression by distributing a questionnaire to faculty and administrative staff at Eastern Michigan University to obtain ratings of attributions for depression. The level of intimacy within a relationship and the severity of depression were related to others' beliefs about the controllability …

Hijacked Justice: Domestic Appropriation Of International Norms, Jelena Subotić Mar 2005

Hijacked Justice: Domestic Appropriation Of International Norms, Jelena Subotić

Human Rights & Human Welfare

This paper explores the domestic politics of international norm diffusion, using the global transmission of transitional justice norms as the empirical context of the research. Applying sociological institutionalism as the principal theoretical framework, I argue that the motivation of states to adopt international models of transitional justice has changed over time. The transitional justice norm - that posits that war crimes and massive human rights abuses must be dealt with in a proper legal setting and not through “victors’ justice” or impunity - was institutionalized in large part as the result of a strong domestic demand for transitional justice in …

Nebraska Farmland Values Continue On Upward Climb, Bruce B. Johnson, Aaron Raymond Mar 2005

Nebraska Farmland Values Continue On Upward Climb, Bruce B. Johnson, Aaron Raymond

Cornhusker Economics

Following a remarkable income year for most of Nebraska agriculture, it probably comes as no great surprise that agricultural land values rose sharply. Preliminary estimates for the year ending February 1, 2005 show the value of Nebraska farmland rising an average of 10.9 percent. This was the largest annual percentage increase of the past 16 years. The increase itself represents a value of more than $4.4 billion, and pushed the total estimated value of Nebraska’s agricultural real estate to nearly $45 billion.

The Expansion Of Intellectual Property Rights By International Agreement: A Case Study Comparing Chile And Australia’S Bilateral Fta Negotiations With The U.S., Ralph G. Fischer Mar 2005

The Expansion Of Intellectual Property Rights By International Agreement: A Case Study Comparing Chile And Australia’S Bilateral Fta Negotiations With The U.S., Ralph G. Fischer

ExpressO

This paper attempts to address the ongoing debate regarding the expansion of intellectual property rights (IPRs) through international negotiations. Commentators have described three theories that purport to explain the growing scope of IPRs in international law, as reflected in international agreements: that these agreements reflect coercion by economically powerful nations; that they are the products of lobbying by multinational corporations; and that they represent autonomous, welfare-enhancing instruments that benefit all parties. The article tests these theories by using a case study comparing free trade agreement negotiations that the United States recently concluded with a less developed country, Chile, and with …

Insider Trading: Hayek, Virtual Markets And The Dog That Did Not Bark, Henry G. Manne Mar 2005

Insider Trading: Hayek, Virtual Markets And The Dog That Did Not Bark, Henry G. Manne

ExpressO

This Essay briefly reexamines the great debates on the role of insider trading in the corporate system from the perspectives of efficiency of capital markets, harm to individual investors, and executive compensation. The focus is on the mystery of why trading by all kinds of insiders as well as knowledgeable outsiders was studiously ignored by the business and investment communities before the advent of insider trading regulation. It is hardly conceivable that officers, directors, and controlling shareholders would have remained totally silent in the face of widespread insider trading if they had seen the practice as being harmful to the …

The Impact Of Structural Adjustment On Health, Education And Employment: A Case Study On Sierra Leone, Rashida Strober Mar 2005

The Impact Of Structural Adjustment On Health, Education And Employment: A Case Study On Sierra Leone, Rashida Strober

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Since their inception in African countries, structural adjustment has tended to cause more harm than help. This thesis aims to answer the question, in what ways have structural adjustment policies impacted Africa in general and Sierra Leone in particular? This question is highly relevant when it is considered that Africa is one of the poorest regions in the world and has experiences much conflict and suffering. In addition, much is known about the impact of structural adjustment in many African countries. However, little has been written on the impact of structural adjustment in Sierra Leone, especially in terms of the …
