Instinct And Second-Guessing Oneself On Tests, Bethany Bennett, Nicole Lafser May 2005

Instinct And Second-Guessing Oneself On Tests, Bethany Bennett, Nicole Lafser

Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal

When taking exams, students may find themselves deciding between the answer that first comes to mind, and a second logical answer. When given the option to record both first instinct and second-guess answers, are students able to answer correctly more on their first or second try? Furthermore, do those students who tend to answer correctly on their second try have lower grade point averages? If so, this would indicate that when taking tests, they have not been able to fully represent their knowledge. In the present study, 16 participants read an informative passage and completed a series of ten open-ended …

Developing A Valid Screening Tool For Assessing Nutritional Adequacy And Osteoporosis Risk Among Vegans In The United States, Patricia Adelle Dyett May 2005

Developing A Valid Screening Tool For Assessing Nutritional Adequacy And Osteoporosis Risk Among Vegans In The United States, Patricia Adelle Dyett

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The vegetarian lifestyle in the United States has increased significantly over recent decades. With this growth trend, it has become necessary to assess the pros and cons of vegetarian diet patterns, particularly with respect to nutrition adequacy and chronic disease concerns.

The vegan diet engenders more concern than other common vegetarian lifestyles because it seeks to replace all nutrient-rich animal food products with only plant foods. Consequently, there are concerns of compromised protein, calcium. vitamin D, vitamin B12, n-3 fatty acid, zinc, and iron status. Moreover, because of typical vegan diet phenomena such as low BMI, low protein …

States’ Rights And The Scope Of The Treaty Power: Could The Patriot Act Be Constitutional As A Treaty?, Simcha Herzog May 2005

States’ Rights And The Scope Of The Treaty Power: Could The Patriot Act Be Constitutional As A Treaty?, Simcha Herzog

The University of New Hampshire Law Review

[Excerpt] “Consider the following hypothetical scenario: after an appeal by the American Civil Liberties Union, the Supreme Court determines that the Patriot Act is unconstitutional. This decision so infuriates President Bush that he seeks out the advice of his legal counsel in a frantic attempt to bypass the Court’s ruling. After some research, President Bush’s legal advisers give him two options: he can either attempt to pass an amendment to the constitution or, with the “advice and consent of the Senate,” he can sign the Patriot Act as a treaty with a foreign nation. Either of these measures will evade …

Service Learning Across The Curriculum: A Collaboration To Promote Smoking Cessation, Jean M. Grow, Joyce M. Wolburg

College of Communication Faculty Research and Publications

This paper focuses on how pedagogy, service, and scholarship can be combined across the advertising curriculum through service learning, which invigorates collaboration among faculty members, student teams, and advertising professionals. The authors demonstrate how service learning projects integrate curricula using a community-based client, ultimately leading to scholarship and professional outcomes. Specifically, this study analyzes the launch of a service learning-based smoking cessation campaign on a Midwest college campus.

Active Aging: Motives And Barriers, Francis G. Caro, Eilon Caspi, Jeffery Burr, Jan Mutchler May 2005

Active Aging: Motives And Barriers, Francis G. Caro, Eilon Caspi, Jeffery Burr, Jan Mutchler

Gerontology Institute Publications

Both the successful aging and productive aging literatures attach great importance to activity. In the successful aging paradigm, activity contributes positively to both physical health and psychological well being. In the productive aging paradigm, older people make contributions to society through certain types of activities, notably gainful employment, community service volunteering, informal assistance usually within their families, and political participation.

Less attention has been given to the relationships among various forms of productive activity. Various forms of activity may be complementary or competitive. In other words, participation in one form of productive activity may open doors to other forms of …

Tennis: The Story Of A Sport - An Exhibition Celebrating The William D. Haggard Iii Tennis Collection, University Libraries--University Of South Carolina

Rare Books & Special Collections Publications

The William D. Haggard III Tennis Collection brought to Thomas Cooper Library its first major collection of rare books about sports history. This exhibition tells the story of tennis over the past seven centuries, beginning with a first edition of the first book about tennis (1555). The earlier cases illustrate the development of tennis from its medieval origins in cloister and royal palace, through its central role in the Renaissance and pre-Revolutionary France. The second half of the exhibition follows the reshaping of tennis in France, England, and America in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Food Law & Policy: An Essay, Peter Barton Hutt May 2005

Food Law & Policy: An Essay, Peter Barton Hutt

Journal of Food Law & Policy

Food has been the driving preoccupation of humans since the dawn of evolution. Exactly when food processing began and when the original hunter-gatherers settled down to develop agriculture-or even the question of which of these occurred first-remain issues of scholarly pursuit and debate. It is clear, however, that these events occurred millennia before the advent of recorded history; therefore, we must rely on largely adventitious discoveries of archeological artifacts to advance our developing knowledge of these events.

What Matters For Financial Development? Capital Controls, Institutions, And Interactions, Menzie David Chinn, Hiro Ito May 2005

What Matters For Financial Development? Capital Controls, Institutions, And Interactions, Menzie David Chinn, Hiro Ito

Economics Faculty Publications and Presentations

We extend our earlier work, focusing on the links between capital account liberalization, legal and institutional development, and financial development, especially that in equity markets. In a panel data analysis encompassing 108 countries and twenty years ranging from 1980 to 2000, we explore several dimensions of the financial sector. First, we test whether financial openness can lead to equity market development when we control for the level of legal and institutional development. Then, we examine whether the opening of the goods sector is a precondition for financial opening. Finally, we investigate whether a well-developed banking sector is a precondition for …

Health Care Workers' Expectations And Empathy Toward Patients In Abusive Relationships, Christina Nicolaidis, Maryann Curry, Martha Gerrity

School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations

Purpose: To understand attitudes that may affect health care workers' ability to provide appropriate long-term care for patients who stay with abusive partners.

Methods: We surveyed 278 health care workers in 31 primary care practices before their participation in an educational intervention.

Results: More than half of participants (51% to 60%) found it easy to empathize with a patient who decided to remain in an abusive relationship if the patient was described as poor or disabled, but few (25% to 39%) could empathize if the patient was described as educated or financially secure. A majority (57% to 59%) agreed with …

Regulating Indecency: The Federal Communication Commission’S Threat To The First Amendment, Reed Hundt

Duke Law & Technology Review

This paper is adapted from a talk given by the author at Duke University School of Law on April 6, 2005. The author argues that the Federal Communication Commission's recent crackdown on television indecency poses a significant threat to First Amendment protections by (1) limiting television viewers' freedom of choice and (2) implying the possibility of punishment for failure to cooperate with the political objectives of the governing party.

K-Means Clustering With Multiresolution Peak Detection, Guanshan Yu, Leen-Kiat Soh, Alan B. Bond May 2005

K-Means Clustering With Multiresolution Peak Detection, Guanshan Yu, Leen-Kiat Soh, Alan B. Bond

Avian Cognition Papers

Clustering is a practical data mining approach of pattern detection. Because of the sensitivity of initial conditions, k-means clustering often suffers from low clustering performance. We present a procedure to refine initial conditions of k-means clustering by analyzing density distributions of a data set before estimating the number of clusters k necessary for the data set, as well as the positions of the initial centroids of the clusters. We demonstrate that this approach indeed improves the accuracy and performance of k-means clustering measured by average intra to interclustering error ratio. This method is applied to the virtual ecology project to …

Good Mental Health Key To Success In Traumatic Job, Carla Kimbrough May 2005

Good Mental Health Key To Success In Traumatic Job, Carla Kimbrough

College of Journalism and Mass Communications: Faculty Publications

Sometimes what we do is no fun. We cover devastation, the horrors of war and tragedy simply because we must. We record history. We tell the stories of life and of death. As journalists, that's what we are called to do.
In this rough and tumble world, we are charged with being ready for anything. The wise among us carry a change of clothes in our trunks, a passport in our top drawer and a can-do spirit in our souls. We are journalists.

Women's Substance Abuse Treatment With Supplemental Couple's Therapy: Changes In Women's Levels Of Intimacy And Autonomy In Relation To Treatment Outcomes By Treatment Modality, Charles N. Davis

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The current study is a secondary analysis of a National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIDA) study in which 122 women received treatment for their substance abuse problems. Three models of substance abuse treatment were administered. One included standard substance abuse treatment alone and two models included supplemental couple's therapy in addition to standard treatment. The current study examined the significance of the relationship between changes in the women's levels of intimacy and autonomy, during and after treatment, and their treatment outcomes according to the treatment modality they received.

It was hypothesized that the relationship would be significant in that levels …

Marital Commitment And Religiosity In A Sample Of Adults In Utah, Sharon S. Harris

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This study examined the relationship of three types of martial commitment and religiosity factors in a random sample of I ,316 Utah adults. Participants were surveyed to assess attitudes of marriage, divorce, and marriage education. A lack of commitment was cited by 83% of divorced adults as a major factor for their divorce. The level of commitment to spouse, commitment to marriage, and constraint commitment was determined by extrapolating items from the 2003 Utah Marriage Movement Statewide Baseline Survey. Religiosity included measures of the frequency of church attendance, church affiliation, and religious values. Regression analyses that included socio-demographics showed the …

Medication Mismanagement Among Elderly In Starr County, Romeo Garcia Jr. May 2005

Medication Mismanagement Among Elderly In Starr County, Romeo Garcia Jr.

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

Given the current and projected rises in prescription drug use among the elderly in the United States and the current and projected rises in prescription drug costs, this research attempts to examine this national trend within the specific context of poverty and rurality manifested in Starr County, Texas. Starr County offers an ideal naturalistic laboratory for examining demographic predictors for improper medication use in the United States, poverty and rural residence. Hence within this context of poverty and rural location, the following questions are posited for investigation in Starr County. To what extent do high drug costs and low incomes …

The Southeastern Ceremonial Complex: The Evolution Of A Concept, Brett J. Millan May 2005

The Southeastern Ceremonial Complex: The Evolution Of A Concept, Brett J. Millan

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

Since the late 19 th century, anthropologists and archaeologists have attempted to explain and interpret an artistic phenomenon that flourished in the southeastern United States. For years explorations in that area unearthed exquisite examples of unique objects with bewildering motifs, and in 1945, Antonio Waring, Jr. and Preston Holder defined the art style as an expression of a ceremonial complex that swept through that region around the 15 th century. The interpretation took fifty years to evolve into the “Southeastern Ceremonial Complex,” and since then, new discoveries, methodologies and theories have changed the concept even further, and in the future, …

Employment Centers In The Akron, Cleveland And Youngstown Metropolitan Areas, Robert Sadowski May 2005

Employment Centers In The Akron, Cleveland And Youngstown Metropolitan Areas, Robert Sadowski

All Maxine Goodman Levin School of Urban Affairs Publications

What is an employment center? McMillen (2003) defines an employment center as a “concentration of firms large enough to have significant effects on the overall spatial distribution of population, employment, and land prices.” Bogart (1998) sees employment centers as a collection of small open economies in a metropolitan area that specialize and trade with each other. Technically speaking, an employment center is a geographic area that exceeds a threshold employment density (employees per square mile) and a threshold employment level.

Welfare Reform, Saving, And Vehicle Ownership: Do Asset Limits And Vehicle Exemptions Matter?, James X. Sullivan May 2005

Welfare Reform, Saving, And Vehicle Ownership: Do Asset Limits And Vehicle Exemptions Matter?, James X. Sullivan

Upjohn Institute Working Papers

This paper examines whether AFDC/TANF asset tests affect the asset holdings of low-educated single mothers, exploiting variation in asset limits and exemptions across states and over time. There are important reasons to examine vehicle assets in this context. For example, vehicles make up a very significant share of total wealth for poor families, and the variation in vehicle exemptions over time and across states far exceeds the variation in asset limits. Consistent with other recent research, I find little evidence that asset limits have an effect on the amount of liquid assets that single mothers hold. However, I find evidence …
