What Makes Asset Securitization "Inefficient"?, Kenji Yamazaki May 2005

What Makes Asset Securitization "Inefficient"?, Kenji Yamazaki

ExpressO

Despite the damage caused by the recent Enron scandal , the asset securitization market has been vibrant and has become a popular financing alternative . A number of academics emphasize its merits and suggest that it is a more favorable way of financing, and Congress’s proposal to make sales of asset in securitization immune from characterization as secured transactions under the Bankruptcy Reform Act of 2001 (the “Reform Act”) almost materialized when the Enron scandal hit the scene. Conversely, there have been accusations that securitization is not a legitimate way of financing because, for example, it fosters fraudulent transactions.

Why …

I have worked on developing a new GIS software package aimed at these and other organizations and individuals with small budgets. The Birth Of A Leader: Personal And Organizational Leadership, Jennifer Peterson

Theses and Graduate Projects

While some individuals believe people are born with leadership skills, others think leadership can be taught. By using Janet Hagberg's Stages of Power along with Margaret Wheatley's Chaos Theory, this paper explores a case study of an executive leader, Magdalena Romero*, and her personal and professional past and current situation as they pertain to leadership. The case study describes how Romero moved from powerlessness (Hagberg's Stage One) to where she is today.

Supportive And Challenging Social Factors In A Decision To Be Sexually Abstinent, Evan Alvord May 2005

Supportive And Challenging Social Factors In A Decision To Be Sexually Abstinent, Evan Alvord

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

Several studies have examined the intrinsic factors, including fear of pregnancy or sexually transmitted diseases, which motivate adolescents to choose sexual abstinence. Currently, little research has been dedicated solely to the extrinsic/social factors, which may also be influential in the decision to abstain from pre-marital sex. Four social factors were presumed to be especially influential, supporting a decision to be sexually abstinent and four social factors were presumed to be significant, challenging the choice to adopt a sexually-abstinent-untilmarriage life style. The proposed supportive social factors include: (a) Parental influence, (b) Peer influence, ( c) Religious affiliation/membership, ( d) Personal relationship …

The Geography Of Organic Farming In Minnesota And Wisconsin, Andrew C. Riely May 2005

The Geography Of Organic Farming In Minnesota And Wisconsin, Andrew C. Riely

Geography Honors Projects

In this study, I examine the agricultural geography of Minnesota and Wisconsin and the history of organic farming. I discuss economic and social factors in the spatial distribution of organic farming. Through field work, mapping, statistical analysis, and farmer surveys, I determined that organic farms cluster in southwestern Wisconsin and central Minnesota. Southwestern Wisconsin's hills limit row cropping, making the land available for organics (especially dairy operations.) The local CROPP cooperative is also a stron support. Finally, most organic farmers farm conventionally before switching to organic. Since they tend not to move, the change rarely affects location.

Geographic Factors As Determinants Of Foreign Direct Investment In Eastern Europe's Transitioning Economies, Jovana Trkulja May 2005

Geographic Factors As Determinants Of Foreign Direct Investment In Eastern Europe's Transitioning Economies, Jovana Trkulja

Geography Honors Projects

The removal of the "Iron Curtain" epitomized the shed of Eastem Europe's central planning and the region's adoption of the Westem market system. To establish a comparative advantage in today's markets, the transitioning nations need financial assistance through Foreign Direct Investment (FDI). While most research focuses on economic and political factors as determinants of FDI this paper additionally examines the regions geography. Results indicate that urban concentration, road networks and proximity to surrounding markets significantly attract foreign investors. The implications of capital inflows are geographically altering as the urban and rural landscapes are modified to reflect the new market system.

Agricultural Subsidies And The Doha Round: A Historic Breakthrough?, Samuel T. Ledermann May 2005

Agricultural Subsidies And The Doha Round: A Historic Breakthrough?, Samuel T. Ledermann

Geography Honors Projects

The international community witnessed a self-proclaimed 'historical breakthrough'at the World Trade Organization (WTO) in late Summer 2004 as a framework was created to eliminate all export subsidies and reduce domestic subsidies and tariffs respectively. While many hailed this step as a major victory for developing nations, others have been cautious on the 'success'of this agreement. This honor thesis evaluates the short- and long-term effects of this framework agreement on the agricultural sectors of the US, South Africa and Mali. The paper first undertakes a historical analysis of what led to this 'victory'for developing nations at the WTO. The paper then …

Stormwater Utility Fees: Considerations & Options For Interlocal Stormwater Working Group (Iswg), New England Environmental Finance Center May 2005

Stormwater Utility Fees: Considerations & Options For Interlocal Stormwater Working Group (Iswg), New England Environmental Finance Center

Water

Stormwater utilities are a concept whose time seems to have arrived. Established by relatively few communities in the 1970s as a method of funding flood control measures, stormwater utilities now exist in over 400 municipalities and counties throughout the United States. During the next 10 years, their numbers are expected to swell dramatically – by one estimate to over 2,000 by the year 2014.

The reasons for this growth are multifold. Federal stormwater regulations passed in the 1980s (Phase I of the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System Program, or NPDES), motivated many larger communities to seek alternative funding sources and …

Credit Where It Counts: Maintaining A Strong Community Reinvestment Act, Michael S. Barr

Law & Economics Working Papers Archive: 2003-2009

The Community Reinvestment Act (CRA) has helped to revitalize low- and moderate-income communities and provided expanded opportunities for low- and moderate-income households. Recent regulatory steps aimed at alleviating burdens on banks and thrifts are unwarranted, and may diminish small business lending as well as community development investments and services. This policy brief explains the rationale for CRA, demonstrates its effectiveness, and argues that the recent regulatory proposals should be withdrawn or significantly modified.

Analysis Of Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder And Its Effects On Child Development, Carmen K. Rossum May 2005

Analysis Of Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder And Its Effects On Child Development, Carmen K. Rossum

Electronic Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of the independent study of pediatric Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder is to aid in the treatment of young individuals suffering from these disturbing behavioral disorders. Although AD/HD in the past was not credited as a true behavioral disorder, researchers have continued to learn more about this illness and how it is affecting our adolescents. Studies have also shown that adults diagnosed with AD/HD most likely suffered from similar symptoms as a child. AD/HD is not learning disability and with dedication from the patient and those involved in his life, he can lead an extremely successful academic as well as …

Presence And Image Quality: The Case Of High-Definition Television, Cheryl C. Bracken May 2005

Presence And Image Quality: The Case Of High-Definition Television, Cheryl C. Bracken

Communication Faculty Publications

Previous research has demonstrated that form variables can increase television viewers' sense of presence. The current broadcasting of high-definition television (HDTV) programming makes testing this relation between form and presence possible in a new context, image quality. In this experiment, television viewers watched either HDTV or standard-definition television images and then rated their viewing experience on a pencil-and-paper questionnaire. The results demonstrate that HDTV provided viewers with a greater sense of presence than the current standard, thus providing empirical evidence for the claim that improved image quality will lead to television viewers' experiencing presence. Additionally, the results suggest that with …
