Repositories: What's The Target? An Arrow Perspective, Derek Whitehead May 2005

Repositories: What's The Target? An Arrow Perspective, Derek Whitehead

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

The key observation about institutional research repositories is that they are under-used. This paper looks at why take-up has been slow, and what might encourage researchers to use these facilities.

This paper surveys the evolution of practice and rationale for the institutional research repository, looks at existing use studies and opinion surveys of users, and examines ways in which university libraries, the main proponents, have changed their approaches in response to their experience. The experience of Swinburne University of Technology, a partner in the Australian ARROW project, is drawn upon.

Distributing Benefits Of Growth To The Majority, Ishrat Husain Dr. May 2005

Distributing Benefits Of Growth To The Majority, Ishrat Husain Dr.

Faculty Research - Talks, Speeches, & Discourse

The major recurring themes in the popular discussion on the economy have been shifting over the last six years. In the earlier years of the Musharraf period it was widely believed that the country was going to default on its external obligations. When this did not happen there was a loud consensus that Pakistan would not be able to comply with the stringent conditionalities of the IMF and would, sooner or later, get off the track. Since the country successfully completed the programme, the concern was raised that we had emphasized too much on macroeconomic stabilization such as large foreign …

High School Principals' Values And Their Symbolic And Cultural Leadership Approaches To Character Education In China, T.C. Kao Edd May 2005

High School Principals' Values And Their Symbolic And Cultural Leadership Approaches To Character Education In China, T.C. Kao Edd

Dissertations

Relatively little is known about the symbolic and cultural leadership practices and approaches used to imbed character education in high schools in China. In addition, there is a lack of published studies and reports investigating the revival between character and moral education in the Chinese school system. Without additional information, it is impossible to understand and develop effective leadership approaches that will shape and mold school cultures to effectively support both character and moral education. The literature reviewed in this study revealed little information about if, and in what form, there is a return to moral education focusing on traditional …

Tribal Workers' Knowledge And Perspectives On The Effectiveness Of The Indian Child Welfare Act, Linda L. Strong

Theses and Graduate Projects

This exploratory study surveyed tribal workers' perspectives on the effectiveness of the Indian Child Welfare Act. The purpose of this study was to gain front line perspectives from the people who work directly with the enforcement of the Indian Child Welfare Act. Do the various tribal workers involved with this study feel knowledgeable, trained, supported and most of all do they feel the Indian Child Welfare Act has been effective? If not, Why? What changes if any need to be made to ensure the effectiveness of the Indian Child Welfare Act? Questionnaires were mailed to tribal workers employed by eleven …

Forest Resource Use, Land-Use, And Ecotourism In The RíO PláTano Biosphere Reserve, Honduras, Christina Marie Friedle May 2005

Forest Resource Use, Land-Use, And Ecotourism In The RíO PláTano Biosphere Reserve, Honduras, Christina Marie Friedle

Dissertations and Theses

The Río Plátano Biosphere Reserve, a tropical rainforest reserve in the northeastern corner of Honduras, is home to several subsistence-based indigenous groups, including the Miskito, Pech and Garifuna, as well as the non-indigenous Ladinos. Communities within the reserve depend on forest resources, swidden agriculture, marine resources and/or small-scale ranching as the foundations for local economies. Regulations placed on these subsistence practices, after establishment of the biosphere reserve in 1980, have created unique and new pressures and resulted in a blend of traditional and innovative resource use. A notable result is the promotion of ecotourism as a solution for meeting the …

Hyperspectral Simulation And Recovery Of Submerged Targets In Turbid Waters, Charles R. Bostater May 2005

Hyperspectral Simulation And Recovery Of Submerged Targets In Turbid Waters, Charles R. Bostater

Ocean Engineering and Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

Modeled hyperspectral reflectance signatures just above the water surface are obtained from radiative transfer models to create synthetic images of targets below the water surface. Images are displayed as 24 bit RGB images of the water surface using selected channels. Example model outputs are presented in this paper for a hyperspectral Monte Carlo and a hyperspectral layered analytical iterative model of radiative transport within turbid shallow water types. Images at the selected wavelengths or channels centered at 490, 530 and 680 nm suggests the two models provide quite similar results when displayed as RGB images. The techniques are demonstrated to …

Changes For Manchester United, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

There is nothing more delightful for an American of a certain perverse persuasion than to watch the Brits get their knickers all twisted up over something as silly as the sale of Manchester United to some little billionaire twit from the dismal swamps of Florida. It has been a wonderful several weeks to watch the spectacle of hysteria over such a trivial matter as this.

Study Of Co-Solvent Effects On Stickies Removal In Supercritical Fluid Extraction, Xiaoying Rong, Dewei Qi, John Chateuneuf, Said Abubakr

Graphic Communication

Using supercritical carbon dioxide to remove stickies in recycling fibers is studied at laboratory scale. Supercritical carbon dioxide is the most environmental friendly supercritical fluid widely used in extraction process. This study includes co-solvent effect on sticky compounds removal by using supercritical carbon dioxide extraction. The sticky compounds are dispensed onto fibers, and then extracted using supercritical carbon dioxide and co-solvent in order to study the efficiency of stickies removal. The results show that supercritical carbon dioxide can remove most sticky compounds such as paraffin wax, polyethylene wax, polyvinyl acetate, polystyrene butadiene. It is demonstrated that with co-solvent, the extraction …

Single Curved Fiber Sedimentation Under Gravity, Xiaoying Rong, Dewei Qi, Jun Yong Zhu, Tim Scott

Graphic Communication

Dynamics of single curved fiber sedimentation under the gravity are simulated by using lattice Boltzmann method. The results of migration and rotation of the curved fiber at different Reynolds numbers are reported. The results show that the rotation and migration processes are sensitive to the curvature of the fiber.

The briefing will present how licensing e- content in Portugal, Spain, Italy, Greece and Turkey is evolving.

Digital Democracy And Its Application To The International Arena – From “Deliberation” To “Decision”, Alexander Siedschlag May 2005

Digital Democracy And Its Application To The International Arena – From “Deliberation” To “Decision”, Alexander Siedschlag

Publications

Apart from the discussion about computer-mediated change in community and domestic political affairs, there is a pending debate on general effects of internet- or “net”-based communication on international politics. The reference to international politics rather than international relations is a consciously chosen one – for this paper focuses on net effects on collective decision-making rather than international-society processes. IP/IR driven research on internet-induced political change does not very much link itself to the state of knowledge in internet-and-politics research. Rather, it commonly departs from sub-discipline specific concepts such as neorealist power analysis or post-international turbulence analysis (cf. Allison 2002).
