Banking Sector Reforms And Bank Consolidation: The Turkey Experience., U. M. Ogubunka
Banking Sector Reforms And Bank Consolidation: The Turkey Experience., U. M. Ogubunka
Bullion
Countries reform their banking sectors for a number of reasons, including structural, capitalization and ownership issues. Consequently, the objectives of the reforms can hardly be the same in all countries. This paper is presented on the basis that an overview of the banking reform in the lessons Nigeria could learn from it. The paper is structured into seven sections. the next section following this introduction identifies some of the key features of Turkish banking system pre-reform era of 2001, section three deals on the drivers of banking reform in the country. section four reviews some of the actions taken in …

Post-Consolidation Challenges., Biodun Adedipe
Bullion
This paper tend to look at the huge complexity of a consolidation programme of the kind embarked upon by the CBN demands caution, constant reappraisal of strategies and actions, and full attention to the identified and emerging challenges. The paper is structured into three parts, dealing with the benefits of a properly conceived and effectively implemented consolidation programme, which has several components. beyond the benefits, the challenges that the banking industry stakeholders (especially the Central Bank of Nigeria) will face when the "dust settles". The final part offers some advice on what the CBN and other stakeholders should do in …

Nonstationary Discrete Choice: A Corrigendum And Addendum, Peter C.B. Phillips, Sainan Jin, Ling Hu
Nonstationary Discrete Choice: A Corrigendum And Addendum, Peter C.B. Phillips, Sainan Jin, Ling Hu
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
We correct the limit theory presented in an earlier paper by Hu and Phillips (Journal of Econometrics, 2004) for nonstationary time series discrete choice models with multiple choices and thresholds. The new limit theory shows that, in contrast to the binary choice model with nonstationary regressors and a zero threshold where there are dual rates of convergence ( n 1 /4 and n 3 /4 ), all parameters including the thresholds converge at the rate n 3 /4 . The presence of non-zero thresholds therefore materially affects rates of convergence. Dual rates of convergence reappear when stationary variables are present …

Economics: The Next Physical Science?, J. Doyne Farmer, Martin Shubik, Eric Smith
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
We review an emerging body of work by physicists addressing questions of economic organization and function. We suggest that, beyond simply employing models familiar from physics to economic observables, remarkable regularities in economic data may suggest parts of social order that can usefully be incorporated into, and in turn can broaden, the conceptual structure of physics.
Limit Theory For Moderate Deviations From A Unit Root Under Weak Dependence, Peter C.B. Phillips, Tassos Magdalinos
Limit Theory For Moderate Deviations From A Unit Root Under Weak Dependence, Peter C.B. Phillips, Tassos Magdalinos
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
An asymptotic theory is given for autoregressive time series with weakly dependent innovations and a root of the form ρ n = 1 + c / n α , involving moderate deviations from unity when α in (0,1) and c in R are constant parameters. The limit theory combines a functional law to a diffusion on D[0,∞) and a central limit theorem. For c > 0, the limit theory of the first-order serial correlation coefficient is Cauchy and is invariant to both the distribution and the dependence structure of the innovations. To our knowledge, this is the first invariance principle of …
Natural Concepts In Macroeconomics, Ray C. Fair
Natural Concepts In Macroeconomics, Ray C. Fair
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
Ragnar Frisch proposed in 1936 a procedure for estimating natural variable values by modifying what are now called structural macroeconometric models. This paper shows that Frisch’s procedure can be used to illuminate natural concepts using today’s models. The procedure also forces one to be precise regarding the assumptions used in moving from a short-run model to a medium-run or long-run model.

Randomized Sign Test For Dependent Observations On Discrete Choice Under Risk, Anat Bracha, Jeremy Gray, Rustam Ibragimov, Boaz Nadler, Dmitry Shapiro, Glena Ames, Donald J. Brown
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
This paper proposes nonparametric statistical procedures for analyzing discrete choice models of affective decision making. We make two contributions to the literature on behavioral economics. Namely, we propose a procedure for eliciting the existence of a Nash equilibrium in an intrapersonal, potential game as well as randomized sign tests for dependent observations on game-theoretic models of affective decision making. This methodology is illustrated in the context of a hypothetical experiment — the Casino Game.
Economic Transition And Growth, Peter C.B. Phillips, Donggyu Sul
Economic Transition And Growth, Peter C.B. Phillips, Donggyu Sul
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
Some extensions of neoclassical growth models are discussed that allow for cross section heterogeneity among economies and evolution in rates of technological progress over time. The models offer a spectrum of transitional behavior among economies that includes convergence to a common steady state path as well as various forms of transitional divergence and convergence. Mechanisms for modeling such transitions and measuring them econometrically are developed in the paper. A new regression test of convergence is proposed, its asymptotic properties are derived and some simulations of its finite sample properties are reported. Transition curves for individual economies and subgroups of economies …
Gmm With Many Moment Conditions, Chirok Han, Peter C.B. Phillips
Gmm With Many Moment Conditions, Chirok Han, Peter C.B. Phillips
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
This paper provides a first order asymptotic theory for generalized method of moments (GMM) estimators when the number of moment conditions is allowed to increase with the sample size and the moment conditions may be weak. Examples in which these asymptotics are relevant include instrumental variable (IV) estimation with many (possibly weak or uninformed) instruments and some panel data models covering moderate time spans and with correspondingly large numbers of instruments. Under certain regularity conditions, the GMM estimators are shown to converge in probability but not necessarily to the true parameter, and conditions for consistent GMM estimation are given. A …
A Note On A ‘Square-Root Rule’ For Reinsurance, Michael R. Powers, Martin Shubik
A Note On A ‘Square-Root Rule’ For Reinsurance, Michael R. Powers, Martin Shubik
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
In previous work, the current authors derived a mathematical expression for the optimal (or “saturation”) number of reinsurers for a given number of primary insurers (see Powers and Shubik, 2001). In the current paper, we show analytically that, for large numbers of primary insurers, this mathematical expression provides a “square-root rule”; i.e., the optimal number of reinsurers in a market is given asymptotically by the square root of the total number of primary insurers. We note further that an analogous “fourth-root rule” applies to markets for retrocession (the reinsurance of reinsurance).

Not Knowing What You're Missing: Autoethnographical Explorations And Reflections Of The Potential Effects Of Fatherlessness, Melodi A. Everett
Not Knowing What You're Missing: Autoethnographical Explorations And Reflections Of The Potential Effects Of Fatherlessness, Melodi A. Everett
Masters Theses
This study explored the potential effects of fatherlessness through the book, Whatever Happened to Daddy's Little Girl, by Jonetta Rose Barras (2000). While examining the text, the author used an autoethnographical method to reflect on her own experiences in relation to the text. This autoethnography examined the potential effects of fatherlessness on women to help understand why they communicate and interact interpersonally in specific ways that may help or hinder them in their adult romantic relationships. Through dialectical theory, specific dialectical tensions were identified to be experienced in father-daughter as well as adult romantic relationships. The tensions that were …

A New Early Eocene Mammalian Fauna From The Great Divide Basin, Southwestern Wyoming: Vertebrate Paleontology, Paleoclimatology, And Biostratigraphy, Edward M. Johnson
Masters Theses
A new early Eocene mammalian fauna from a series of localities in the Great Divide Basin of southwestern Wyoming is described in this Masters Thesis. Seven localities in the vicinity of Tipton Buttes have yielded 1627 fossil specimens that have been identified, catalogued, and analyzed. The goal of this thesis is to develop a biostratigraphic framework for dating this fossil assemblage based on comparisons with well-dated assemblages from other localities in the American West. Field crews from Western Michigan University have collected fossil vertebrates from Tipton Buttes during most summer field seasons between 1995 and 2003. The analyses indicate that …

Play And Technology:A Study Of Icts In Play Activities Of Irish Children (4-8 And 8-12), Brian O'Neill, Noirin Hayes, Stella Downey
Conference Papers
Defined in the Ireland’s national play policy as ‘freely chosen, personally directed, intrinsically motivated behaviour that actively engages the child’ (NCO, 2004, p.10), play now more often than not is a technologically-mediated activity. This paper focuses on the role of technology in play and explores the impact of technological change on children’s play activities. Drawing on our study commissioned by Ireland’s National Children’s Office, we present a detailed exploration of the play activities of Irish children, identifying the range of technologies accessed by children and how they are used in their daily play patterns. The project provided children with an …

Affective Benefits Of Capitalizing On Personal Positive Events, Daniel B. Goldman
Affective Benefits Of Capitalizing On Personal Positive Events, Daniel B. Goldman
Master's Theses
The present study examined how disclosing personal positive events influenced ensuing positive affect (PA). Forty undergraduate students reported personal positive events either privately or to a friend. All participants made written and vocal disclosures, counterbalanced to control for order effects. We hypothesized that participants who vocally reported positive experiences to a friend would have the highest PA scores subsequent to disclosure. Results from a two-way mixed ANOV A failed to support the hypothesis. Trait optimism was significantly related to positive affect, but its inclusion as a covariate in the ANOV A did not influence the pattern of results. These results …
Purchasing Power Parity And Exchange Rate In Nigeria: A Regime Switching Approach., M. C. Ononugbo
Purchasing Power Parity And Exchange Rate In Nigeria: A Regime Switching Approach., M. C. Ononugbo
Economic and Financial Review
This study basically extends the work of Obaseki (1998) by including an additional variable to capture the impact of changes in exchange rate regime. The paper undertakes an empirical examination of the long-run co-movement in naira exchange rate and relative price levels of Nigeria and USA. The impact of the policy swap from a system of exchange rate control to a market based system (captured by a dummy variable) is investigated using an error correction model. The outcome reveals the applicability of the PPP using Nigerian data. From the analysis, the prevailing nominal exchange rate during the period closely approximates …
Pipeline Transportation Of Petroleum Products In Nigeria: Threats, Challenges And Prospects., G. T. Arosanyin
Pipeline Transportation Of Petroleum Products In Nigeria: Threats, Challenges And Prospects., G. T. Arosanyin
Economic and Financial Review
Pipeline transportation as a mode is crucial for the distribution of petroleum products in Nigeria. The mode has contributed immensely to the movement of crude oil and refined products across the country and for export. The contribution of this mode is, however, under threat from natural ruptures, vandalization, and sub-optimal usage of pipelines. The constraints of other modes in the haulage of refined products over long distances provide a great challenge and opportunity for the pipeline mode to explore. For the pipeline mode to take full advantage of these opportunities, the government must expand the pipeline network, maintain properly the …
Determinants Of Non Debt Government Expenditure In Nigeria: 1970-2003., Magnus O. Abeng
Determinants Of Non Debt Government Expenditure In Nigeria: 1970-2003., Magnus O. Abeng
Economic and Financial Review
This paper is an empirical attempt to situate and examine the trend in the growth and structure of non-debt government expenditure in Nigeria. The objective is to elicit the determining factors driving non-debt expenditure growth profile, and by implication the growth of gross domestic product (GDP) in Nigeria. The study found a continuous downward movement, compared with allusions of increasing size of government expenditure as measured by the expenditure to GDP ratio. Econometric analysis indicated the existence of positive relationships and high sensitivity of total non debt expenditure to population growth, gross domestic product, total revenue and political activities, but …

The Portrayal Of African American Women In Hip-Hop Videos, Ladel Lewis
The Portrayal Of African American Women In Hip-Hop Videos, Ladel Lewis
Masters Theses
This study analyzed 52 of the most popular hip-hop videos aired on Black Entertainment Television in the summer of 2004. Using a qualitative content analysis instrument used in a previous study, three prominent characteristics in these videos were identified: (1) the level of sexism, (2) the presence of intimate touch and/or the presence of alluring attire. From those characteristics, it was discerned that there were more videos that possessed high levels of sexism than those that had very little or non . It was also found that the majority of the videos depicted women wearing alluring attire and having intimate …
