All The World's A Coffee Shop: Reflections On Place, Community And Identity, Anthony M. Orum Jul 2005

All The World's A Coffee Shop: Reflections On Place, Community And Identity, Anthony M. Orum

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

This essay uses a personal experience, the routine of daily activity at my local coffee shop, to illustrate the importance of places to the nature of human experience. Every day, I argue, the conversations and interactions that take place at the White Hen store nearby my house serve to reaffirm a number of important features of my life: (1) a sense of my own identity; (2) a sense of a larger community of people outside my family and close friends; (3) a sense of civility, of small kindnesses and courtesies among people who, on the face of it, seem very …

Intention To Seek Information On Cancer Genetics, James E. Andrews, J. David Johnson, Donald O. Case, Suzanne L. Allard, Kimberly Kelly Jul 2005

Intention To Seek Information On Cancer Genetics, James E. Andrews, J. David Johnson, Donald O. Case, Suzanne L. Allard, Kimberly Kelly

Communication Faculty Publications

Objective. The public has a high interest in seeking personal genetic information, which holds implications for health information seeking research and health care policy. Rapid advances in cancer genetics research promise early detection, prevention and treatment, yet consumers may have greater difficulty finding and using the information they may need to make informed decisions regarding their personal health and the future of their families.

Design. A statewide telephone survey was conducted of non-institutionalized Kentucky residents 18 years of age or older to investigate factors associated with the intention to seek cancer genetics information, including the need for such information seeking …

A New Agenda For The Cultural Study Of Law: Taking On The Technicalities, Annelise Riles Jul 2005

A New Agenda For The Cultural Study Of Law: Taking On The Technicalities, Annelise Riles

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

This article urges humanistic legal studies to take the technical dimensions of law as a central focus of inquiry. Using archival and ethnographic investigations into developments in American Conflict of Laws doctrines as an example, and building on insights in the anthropology of knowledge and in science and technology studies that focus on technical practices in scientific and engineering domains, it aims to show that the technologies of law - an ideology that law is a tool and an accompanying technical aesthetic of legal knowledge - are far more central and far more interesting dimensions of legal practice than humanists …

Effects Of Gender And Hypovolemia On Sympathetic Neural Responses To Orthostatic Stress, Qi Fu, Sarah Witkowski, Kazunobu Okazaki, Benjamin D. Levine Jul 2005

Effects Of Gender And Hypovolemia On Sympathetic Neural Responses To Orthostatic Stress, Qi Fu, Sarah Witkowski, Kazunobu Okazaki, Benjamin D. Levine

Exercise and Sport Studies: Faculty Publications

We tested the hypothesis that women have blunted sympathetic neural responses to orthostatic stress compared with men, which may be elicited under hypovolemic conditions. Muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA) and hemodynamics were measured in eight healthy young women and seven men in supine position and during 6 min of 60° head-up tilt (HUT) under normovolemic and hypovolemic conditions (randomly), with ∼4-wk interval. Acute hypovolemia was produced by diuretic (furosemide) administration ∼2 h before testing. Orthostatic tolerance was determined by progressive lower body negative pressure to presyncope. We found that furosemide produced an ∼13% reduction in plasma volume, causing a similar …

Leaves Of Grass At 150, University Libraries--University Of South Carolina

Rare Books & Special Collections Publications

This booklet accompanied the exhibit which marks the 150th anniversary of the publication of Whitman's major work, Leaves of Grass (1855). The items on display were drawn chiefly from the Thomas Cooper Library's Joel Myerson Collection of Nineteenth-Century Literature, and this booklet records the arrangement and explanatory text of the exhibit as actually mounted. The exhibit is arranged chronologically, to show the growth and development of Whitman's poetry, and the effects on his books of his own close involvement in their production. Included are all the major editions in the development of Leaves of Grass, from two variants of …

Not In Our Name: Reclaiming The Democratic Vision Of Small School Reform, Michelle Fine Jul 2005

Not In Our Name: Reclaiming The Democratic Vision Of Small School Reform, Michelle Fine

Publications and Research

Maybe we weren’t clear. The small schools movement was never simply about size. When committed educators and community activists in New York City, Philadelphia, Chicago, Oakland, Boston, and Cincinnati launched the movement, they were desperately seeking alternatives to the failures of big city high schools. They fashioned a vibrant, gutsy social movement for creating democratic, warm, and intellectually provocative schools, particularly for poor and working-class youth of color.

Three Steps To Landing Your First Journalism Job, Carla Kimbrough

College of Journalism and Mass Communications: Faculty Publications

Four. Five. Maybe even Six. The number of years it took to earn your ticket to the big time.
You've donned your cap and gown and celebrated. Now, it's time to take life more seriously. Your parents warn you that soon you will be responsible for your own livelihood. Student (loan lenders remind you that you have only six months before you'll pay the piper.
You decide it's best to start applying for jobs. You apply to the places you've always wanted to live or the papers you read about during school. You hear nothing, or at least nothing encouraging. …

Enhancing The Oregon Crash Reporting Process: A Feasibility Study, Christopher M. Monsere, Erin E. Wilson, Amber Springberg Jul 2005

Enhancing The Oregon Crash Reporting Process: A Feasibility Study, Christopher M. Monsere, Erin E. Wilson, Amber Springberg

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

In most states, police officers and trained investigators complete crash reports for nearly all reportable crashes that occur on public roads. Many states have made significant improvements in the quality and timeliness of their crash data systems by implementing, in addition to other improvements, electronic filing of these reports by police officers. Oregon relies on citizen reports for a majority of their crash data and paper forms must be submitted to the responsible state agency and are then manually coded into the crash data system. Police reports are also paper based. This process limits the improvements that can be made …

A Study Of Self-Imposed Silence And Perceived Listening Effectiveness, Cynthia Marroquin-Baldwin Jul 2005

A Study Of Self-Imposed Silence And Perceived Listening Effectiveness, Cynthia Marroquin-Baldwin

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

This study examines the affects of self-imposed silence on perceived listening effectiveness. The subjects used in this study were 15 males and 17 females from the McAllen area (n = 32). These subjects were nonsystematically approached at the Lark Community Center/Library to solicit participation in the study. Four tests were performed to test the possible affects that 12 hours of self-imposed silence may have on listening. The independent t-test used to analyze differences in posttest scores between the treatment group and the control group revealed that no significant difference was found. The independent t-test used to analyze differences in pretest …

Refundable Tax Credits For Health Insurance: The Sensitivity Of Simulated Impacts To Assumed Behavior, David W. Emmons, Eva Madly, Stephen A. Woodbury Jul 2005

Refundable Tax Credits For Health Insurance: The Sensitivity Of Simulated Impacts To Assumed Behavior, David W. Emmons, Eva Madly, Stephen A. Woodbury

Upjohn Institute Working Papers

We replicate and extend a simulation model developed by Jonathan Gruber with the goals of illuminating Gruber's modeling of health insurance coverage under a tax credit and examining the sensitivity of the results to changes in the model's key parameters. The replications suggest that a refundable tax credit of $1,000 for a single individual or $2,000 for a family for private health insurance would reduce the number of uninsured individuals by between 17.5 and 28 percent and require new government expenditures of between $16.6 and $44 billion, of which about $7.4-$9.7 billion would be for coverage of previously uninsured individuals. …

On Joel Weishaus' Forest Park: A Journal, Christine Cusick Jul 2005

On Joel Weishaus' Forest Park: A Journal, Christine Cusick

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

I tend to have an often stubborn suspicion of the convergence of art and technology, language that loses and finds us in the throes of new and unbound understanding somehow, seems diminished when the materiality of its record cannot be felt, when visceral responses cannot make a palimpsest of the text through the marginalia of an earnest reader. And so, when I first heard mention of a highly respected poet and thinker chronicling his time-felt ruminations and intuitions on cyberspace, I was initially hesitant to pursue the encounter. However, my hesitation quickly turned to humble engagement as I …

Becoming Culturally Responsive Teachers Through Service-Learning: A Case Study Of Five Novice Classroom Teachers, Elinor L. Brown, Bobby R. Howard

Service Learning, General

In the effort to augment teacher candidate education beyond text-based direct instruction, universities and teacher preparation programs are incorporating more field-based interactions through which teacher candidates can master skills and reinforce pedagogy through experience. The term "service-learning" was first used by the Southern Regional Education Board in 1969 to describe "the accomplishment of tasks that meet genuine human needs in combination with conscious educational growth" (Staton, Giles & Cruz, 1999).
