Implicit And Explicit Attitudes Towards Body Images, Kenneth Brasel

This study examined the differences of men's and women's implicit and explicit attitudes towards three constructs of body images: muscular, obese, and skinny. Participants were 101 volunteers and included 31 male and 70 female college students attending Western Kentucky University. Age of the participants ranged from 18 to 59 years, with a mean of 21.23 years (SD = 6.47). All participants were given a questionnaire with a series of male and female body images along a continuum of obese-skinny-muscular. Research has shown that the number of caregiving grandparents in America has steadily increased. If this trend continues there will be more of a need for society to recognize this population and the difficulties that they face due to the atypical structure of these households. Research has produced mixed results as to what effect raising grandchildren has on grandparent caregivers. Most research has found that raising a grandchild increases stress levels (Bowers & Myers, 1999; Musil 1998; Sands & Goldberg-Glen, 2000). Development Of The Anxiety Change Expectancy Scale (Aces) And Validation In College, Community, And Clinical Samples., David J A Dozois, Henny A Westra

This study investigated the psychometric properties of a newly developed 20-item instrument that assesses one's anticipation of being able to change anxiety: the Anxiety Change Expectancy Scale (ACES). Study 1 evaluated the ACES in undergraduate university students, self-identified as experiencing difficulties with anxiety. Study 2 examined the ACES in a community sample of persons with anxiety difficulties. Study 3 tested the utility of the ACES in predicting treatment change in a group of individuals with generalized anxiety disorder participating in group cognitive behavioral therapy for anxiety. The anterior medial prefrontal (AMPFC) and retrosplenial (RSC) cortices are active during self-referential decision-making tasks such as when participants appraise traits and abilities, or current affect. Other appraisal tasks requiring an evaluative decision or mental representation, such as theory of mind and perspective-taking tasks, also involve these regions. In many instances, these types of decisions involve a subjective opinion or preference, but also a degree of ambiguity in the decision, rather than a strictly veridical response. The purpose of this study was to determine administrator's perceptions of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, with particular emphasis on the areas of standards, assessment, accountability, and parental choice. One hundred superintendents and 660 principals were randomly selected to participate in the study. The survey consisted of five questions regarding standards, five questions regarding assessment, five questions regarding accountability, and five questions regarding parental choice as each relates to the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001. The primary purpose of this study was to examine the effect of middle level grade configurations on eighth grade academic achievement as determined by the results reported on the ISTEP+ (Indiana Statewide Testing for Educational Progress-Plus). Furthermore, the study analyzed the effects of grade configuration, school locale, and transition type on eighth grade academic achievement. A 2 x 2 x 2 factorial design was employed to collect and analyze the data for this study. Deer-vehicle accidents (DV As) are a problem in many areas. They cause millions of dollars in property damage, personal injury, and loss of life each year. This thesis examines whether DVAs in Vigo County, Indiana during the year 2000 were spatially autocorrelated; and whether DV As selected by deer habitat were spatially autocorrelated. Specifically using Moran's I to test for spatial autocorrelation this study determined if and to what degree spatial autocorrelation existed among these DVAs. A Moran's I value of .0023 shows that the accidents occurred randomly. These DV A data were then used to plot a map which …

Individuation Revisited: Implications For Parent Education, Jodi Dworkin, Chih-Yuan Lee

Researchers have suggested that adolescents' increase in autonomy is accompanied by maintaining close relations with parents. In this article, we explore this process of individuation from the perspective of mothers. Nearly 900 (n=878) white mothers of children aged 2 to 14 were interviewed via the telephone about their child's independence and their perception of parent-child connectedness. Analyses revealed that from the perspective of mothers, while independence increased across childhood, parent-child connectedness decreased. These data suggest the need to support parents in remaining connected to their children as they enter adolescence. Implications of these findings for parent education are considered.

This study assessed the performance of different biomass estimation methods using Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) lll data in a temperate forest. Multiple linear regression statistics of spectral band data and derived indices with biomass values were compared with advanced neural network models created with spectral band data and indices to model biomass values. Biomass for the study area was estimated using both of these methods and the results were discussed. The data were analyzed using multivariate statistical analysis. Creativity and Change Leadership Graduate Student Master's Projects

This project presents two new tools that have been created by the author for the CPS process. The first tool, Knowing the Bullseye (KB Analysis), is used to analyze an objective by examining characteristics associated with the objective. The other tool designed is the Arena Plan for Ensuring Success (APES Evaluation). This tool is utilized to evaluate a plan of action before implementation takes place. The tools’ design, development, procedure for usage, examples, and evaluation are presented. Both of these tools are meant to assist in the decision making and CPS process and have been delivered in a user-friendly manner.

This project focused on identifying and working with the unique needs of a child with Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD). Using the Creative Problem Solving (CPS) model, strategies and tools, the author designed and developed a home environment that promoted successful living for a child with SPD as well as positive interactions with family members. The project contains a description of the practical adaptations to everyday living in a physical space, as well as resources for parents, caregivers, educators and other professionals.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of an online prevention exercise. The rigorous evaluation of one online exercise using controlled school environment was seen as the first step in understanding the potential of online activities to help teens prevent substance abuse. This study assessed changes in knowledge, attitudes, normative beliefs, perceived behavioral control, and intention to change behavior produced by exposure to a Web-based anger management exercise. Results showed significant changes in knowledge after exposure to the teacher led online exercise and the teacher led supplemented by homework groups, but not the other measures. This was …

Duration And Depth: The Effects Of Leader-Follower Relationship Quality On Observer Ratings Of Leadership Performance, William David Rigdon

Previous research has shown that the duration and depth of the leader-follower relationship influences how followers rate their leaders. However, no studies were found that asked whether this relationship influenced how leader-supervisors rated leaders. This study investigated how the closeness (duration and depth) of the leader-follower relationship affected supervisor ratings. Based on previous research, this study expected to find a negative relationship between leader-follower closeness and supervisor ratings of overall performance, advancement potential and risk of career difficulty. Although the duration of the leader-follower relationship marginally supported this hypothesis, duration and depth together (closeness) did not.
