Perspectival Anthropology And The Method Of Controlled Equivocation, Eduardo Viveiros De Castro Jun 2004

Perspectival Anthropology And The Method Of Controlled Equivocation, Eduardo Viveiros De Castro

Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America

This article argues that doing anthropology means comparing anthropologies. Comparison is not just our primary analytic tool, it is also our raw material and our ultimate grounding, since what we compare are always and necessarily, in one form or other, comparisons. If, as Marilyn Strathern suggests, culture consists in the way people draw analogies between different domains of their worlds, then every culture is a multidimensional process of comparison. Likewise, if anthropology studies culture through culture, then, following Roy Wagner, whatever operations characterize our investigations must also be general properties of culture. Intracultural relations, or internal comparisons, and intercultural relations, …

External Sector Policies In The 2004 Budget, Obadan I. Mike Jun 2004

External Sector Policies In The 2004 Budget, Obadan I. Mike

Bullion

External sector problems have continued to pose serious challenges to economic management in Nigeria. There is the challenge of conducting trade policy within the framework of the World Trade Organisation's [WTO] rules and regulations without compromising the country's short and Iong-term interests. This paper discusses the policy thrusts with respect to three issues in 2004, viz: Trade policy, Exchange rate policy, and External debt management. In the last few years, the government appears to have recognized the need to conduct trade policy, specifically, trade liberalization in a sensible and orderly manner. Hence, the growing effective protection being accorded local industries. …

Real Sector Policies In The 2004 Budget, A I. Ayodele

Bullion

The real sector of the economy is composed of such sub-sectors as agriculture, manufacturing, mining (solid minerals), crude oil and gas. Given this composition, it is no gainsaying that the real sector of the Nigerian economy constitutes the main driving force of the country, such that no sustainable development can be achieved without a well-developed and viable real sector. This paper examines the Nigerian real sector. It looks at the features which constitute some threats to the success of policies on the real sector. It makes a review of the real sector policies in the 2004 budget and It focusses …

The paper addresses definitional issues about domestic debt and domestic debt sustainability relative to national output as well as the necessary policy implications. It also examined the causes, size and growth, sources and structure. Using the budget constraint model relative to GDP, the paper concludes that under the current fiscal stance of primary deficit, the Federal Government domestic debt …

Nebraska Feedyard Labor Cost Benchmarks And Historical Trends, Rik R. Smith, Darrell R. Mark

Department of Agricultural Economics: Faculty Publications

Cattle feedyards in Nebraska were surveyed in April 2004 to determine costs of labor for various production and administrative employees. Fifty-nine feedyards, with an average size of 9,473 head, provided levels of salaries, benefits and bonuses paid to their employees, and the number of employees in several job-function categories. Results of the survey indicate that the average total compensation (salary, benefits, and bonuses) for feedyard managers was more than $66,000 per year, but it varied substantially by feedyard size. Total compensation to other supervisor categories of labor, including assistant manager, yard foreman, mill foreman, and maintenance foreman, averaged in the …

The Association Of Blood Type On The Five Factors Of Personality In Chinese Adolescents, Kunher Wu Jun 2004

The Association Of Blood Type On The Five Factors Of Personality In Chinese Adolescents, Kunher Wu

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The purpose of this study was to identify the number of personality factors in Chinese adolescents using the Chinese Revised NEO Personality Inventory (NEO-PI-R) and to determine whether blood type is associated with personality. It is widely accepted by psychologists that the five-factor model can provide an adequate representation of adult personality dimensions, but there is less agreement on the number of factors observable in adolescence. A total of 3,396 11th graders from the city of Kaohsiung, Taiwan completed the Chinese NEO-PI-R. Principle component analysis with varimax rotation showed five factors of personality in these Taiwanese adolescents, which clearly …

Pain Experienced By Patients During Periodontal Examination, Mohammed A. Al-Ajmi

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The aims of the present study were to determine the level of pain experienced by patients from probing during periodontal examination, and to find out to what extent the examining periodontist and the dental assistant could estimate the degree of pain experienced by the patients.

For each of three periodontists, 20 patients referred for periodontal diagnosis and treatment were selected. The periodontist carried out his examination, which included probing at six sites per tooth. Following probing, the patients rated the pain using a Visual Analog Scale (VAS). The periodontist and the dental assistant who helped out during the examination independently …

Functional Status In Children Diagnosed With All: Age And Gender Effects, Sean Eugene Evans Jun 2004

Functional Status In Children Diagnosed With All: Age And Gender Effects, Sean Eugene Evans

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Age and gender have been purported as important variables in predicting the outcome of children diagnosed with leukemia. This study examines the relationship between age and gender as predictors of functional status in children following the completion of the induction phase of their treatment (i.e., approximately 5-weeks following their diagnosis) for acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL). Prior to analyses, it was asserted that boys and girls would indicate unique experiences of perceived pain intensity and would yield significant differences in functional status scores as measured by the children’s parents. A sample of 50 boys (N=33) and girls (N=17) between the ages …

The Role Of Economic, Political, And Cultural Factors In Immigration Policy In France, The United Kingdom, And Germany, Sheri L. Rogers

Masters Theses

Immigration policy has been a crucial issue facing all Western European countries for decades; however, it has recently become an even greater concern. Much of the literature argues that shifts in immigration policy correspond with shifts in economic conditions or the power of far-right parties. Others argue that immigration policy is primarily a cultural issue, although very little research has been done to address the role of specific cultural factors in different countries.

This paper looks at the evolution of immigration policy in France, the United Kingdom, and Germany, and addresses the question of why immigration policies in each country …

Celebrating 4-H, Youth, And Technology: The Nebraska 4-H Cyber Fair, Patricia Fairchild, Diane Vigna, Jamie Fassett

Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Faculty Publications

What began as a meta search for 4-H curricula available on the Internet became a phenomenon that has served more than 18,000 Nebraskans in an amazing example of creating partnerships; blending resources; and celebrating 4-H, youth, and technology. Welcome to the Nebraska 4-H Cyber Fair. When the Nebraska 4-H Office conducted an extensive review of Web-based curricula and CD-ROMs created by Cooperative Extension and 4-H nationwide, it became apparent that considerable material was available for delivery by computer. Although some of the material discovered was Nebraska-based, it was not necessarily known to Nebraskans involved in 4-H programming. Nebraska youth in …

Foreign Trade And The Gender Earnings Differential In Urban Mexico, Gautam Hazarika, Rafael Otero Jun 2004

Foreign Trade And The Gender Earnings Differential In Urban Mexico, Gautam Hazarika, Rafael Otero

School of Economics and Finance Faculty Publications

This paper examines the effect of foreign trade induced product market competition, upon workplace gender discrimination in urban Mexico as measured by the gender earnings differential. More than 3 decades ago, Becker (1957) argued that labor market discrimination was economically inefficient in that discriminating firms must forego a quantity of profit. Thus, firms with more market power, i.e., firms facing less competition, may be likelier to discriminate. It therefore follows that competition in product markets may reduce discrimination in labor markets. The spread of foreign trade has traditionally been a major factor in increased product market competition. Hence, Becker's thesis …

South Park Blocks Area Development Strategy: Priorities And Actions To Strengthen Neighborhood Identity, Lisa Abuaf, Natasha Detweiler, Steve Faust, Jennifer Mannhard, Dan Zalkow

Master of Urban and Regional Planning Workshop Projects

Past and current planning efforts by the City of Portland, such as the South Park Blocks Urban Renewal Area and the West End plan, have sought to promote new mixed-use development through increasing the residential density and investment in the area. The West End plan focused primarily on the area north of SW Salmon Street and the urban renewal area currently does not have a standing advisory committee to represent the Downtown neighborhood’s interests. This project consists of a neighborhood analysis to distill the identity of the area, an identification of the opportunities and challenges to development, and a strategy …

The Marble Industry In Egypt: A Microeconomic Analysis, Azza Ibrahim Hamed Kandil

Archived Theses and Dissertations

This thesis presents a microeconomic assessment of the marble industry in Egypt. It starts with an overview and analysis of the international marble industry, highlighting this industry as one of the oldest industries in the world. Historically, the industry moved from laborintensive to capital-intensive with the advent of technological advancement, including development of automated production tools like cranes and diamond cutting wires. In Egypt, during the past 20 years, market entry into the industry was high, due to the high profit margins achieved. In addition, there was (and still is) lack of effective government regulation. Currently, the marble industry in …

Archived Theses and Dissertations

Development from below has become an increasingly important theme in

development planning since the 1970s. Indigenous knowledge is an important element in development from below and its importance lies mainly in what it says about the power of people to control the changes they experience. It is from there that 'Participatory Development' as a field came to gain much attention lately. In participatory projects, it is important that the beneficiaries of these projects be involved in the decision making process as to what the nature of these projects will be and how they will be implemented, and that they be …
