Research And The Bottom Line In Today’S University, Sarah Bonewits Feldner, Lawrence Soley
College of Communication Faculty Research and Publications
Citing examples of corporate involvement in university research and decision making, the authors argue that today’s university is characterized by a web of symbiotic relationships which may turn them away from other important priorities, particularly teaching. When universities are scrambling for corporate support, the missions that become most important are conducting research that attracts corporate sponsors, developing marketable products and technologies, maintaining and cultivating ties with the private sector, and fashioning imaginative partnerships with corporate patrons.

Spousal Congruence On Disability, Pain, And Spouse Responses To Pain, Annmarie Cano, Ayna B. Johansen, Michael Geisser
Psychology Faculty Research Publications
We examined congruence between chronic pain patients and their spouses on their reports of patient pain severity, patient disability, and spouse responses to pain. Patients reported that they were more physically and psychosocially disabled than their spouses reported them to be. However, spouses reported that the patients’ pain was more severe than patients reported. Depressive disorders in the patient and gender interacted with patient–spouse ratings. For physical and psychosocial disability, depressed patient couples reported significantly larger differences in disability ratings than nondepressed patient couples. In addition, female patients’ disability was rated as more severe by the female patients than by …
Virtual Browsing Via Deeplinked Catalog Searches, Scott A. Warren
Virtual Browsing Via Deeplinked Catalog Searches, Scott A. Warren
Librarian Publications
This project facilitates virtual browsing by means of deeplinked catalog searches based on Library of Congress (LC) subject headings and call numbers. Collocating these searches by discipline in pulldown menus opens up the physical book collection in a seamless online fashion to users lacking LC subject heading knowledge, but possessing subject knowledge. Virtual browsing is important because it may aid awareness of and increased use of print collections in large libraries, especially by researchers who rarely visit the library physically.

In Search Of A Fair Bet In The Lottery, Victor Matheson, Kent Grote
In Search Of A Fair Bet In The Lottery, Victor Matheson, Kent Grote
Economics Department Working Papers
Although state-operated lotto games have the worst average expected payoffs among common games of chance, because the jackpot can accumulate, the maximum expected payoff is potentially unlimited. It is possible, therefore, that lotto can exhibit a positive expected return. This paper examines 18,000 drawings in 34 American lotteries and finds approximately 1% of these drawings provided players with a fair bet. If it were possible for a bettor to purchase every possible combination, however, most lotteries commonly experience circumstances where such a purchase would provide a positive return with 11% of the drawings providing a fair bet to the player.
