Racial Disparity In Chicago Arrests, 1998-2002, Jenelle A. Robinson

Concerns of racial disparity in the criminal justice system have been the subject of public attention for decades. This study examines racial disparity in Chicago arrests from 1998-2002 and compares the levels of disparity in Chicago to these the nation. The study provides an average percentage of arrests for all given years for each race/ethnic group and compares that to the percentage of the population for each race/ethnicity to see if racial disparity exists. Results suggest that the largest disparities exist for Blacks, Hispanics, and Native Americans for both Chicago and the nation.

Minnesota's 2002 elections were a disaster for progressive women, those who support abortion rights and believe that government has a key role in making social improvements. In 2002 no progressive woman was elected to statewide office, and three key senators and four progressive representatives lost their re-election bids.

This research asks: Where and why has leadership emerged that helps progressive women regain ground in the Minnesota House of Representatives and adds Minnesota women to Congress?

Reactivity To Conspicuousness And Alcohol Use Among College Students: The Moderating Effect Of Alcohol Expectancies, Lizabeth A. Crawford, Katherine B. Novak

The analysis of self-report data from 147 college undergraduates suggested that alcohol expectancies moderate the effect of a dispositional susceptibility to embarrassment elicited by undesired conspicuousness [center-of-attention-induced embarrassability (CAE)] on drinking behavior. Individuals unlikely to experience embarrassment when they engage in behaviors that make them stand out in a crowd, a common occurrence when one drinks to excess, drank heavily if they expected alcohol to make them more assertive socially. Students with similar beliefs about the effects of alcohol on social interaction who were high in CAE consumed substantially less alcohol than the latter individuals. Abstract

The story of Siglufjörour (Siglufjordur), a north Iceland village that became the "Herring Capital of the World," provides a case study of complex interactions between physical, biological, and social systems. Siglufjörour's natural capital - a good harbor and proximity to prime herring grounds - contributed to its development as a major fishing center during the first half of the 20th century. This herring fishery was initiated by Norwegians, but subsequently expanded by Icelanders to such an extent that the fishery, and Siglufjörour in particular, became engines helping to pull the whole Icelandic economy. Self-Disclosure In Intimate Relationships: Associations With Individual And Relationship Characteristics Over Time, Susan K. Sprecher, Susan S. Hendrick

Self-disclosure is an act of intimacy and serves as a maintenance strategy, and yet very little prior research has examined self-disclosure within relationships with data collected multiple times over an extended period of time and from both partners. With longitudinal data collected from both partners in young adult dating couples, we examined how self-disclosure is associated with both individual characteristics (e.g., responsiveness, self-esteem) and relationship characteristics (satisfaction, love, commitment). Overall, men and women indicated a similar high level of self-disclosure. This limited analysis resulted from a request by the Nebraska National Forest to provide some economic estimates to the value of changes in forage availability that would result from three proposed levels of rodenticide use in the management of black-tailed prairie dogs (BTPD) on the Nebraska National Forest (NNF) and associated units managed by NNF (i.e. Buffalo Gap National Grasslands, Ft. Pierre National Grasslands in South Dakota, and the Oglala National Grasslands in Nebraska.) The purpose of this study was to compare the perceptions and practices of Indiana public school superintendents who represent two groups, those who had experienced building exposure to mold and those who had not experienced building exposure to mold. Seventy-five Indiana public school superintendents responded to the opinionnaire with a return rate of 81.5%. Results indicate that: (1) Indiana public school superintendents who had not experienced building exposure to mold had higher mean values than those who had experienced building exposure to mold relative to closing only classrooms affected by mold and to relocating staff and students exposed to mold; …

Measures of psychopathy and the Adlerian construct of social interest have both been found to predict recidivism of convicted offenders. While the two constructs seem to identify related but opposite traits, the relationship between the traits has not been systematically examined. This study examined the relationship between social interest, lll as assessed by the Sulliman Scale of Social Interest (SSSI), and psychopathy, as assessed by the Psychopathic Personality Inventory (PPI) in order to clarify their relationship. This study examines the work of James Hillman-world-renowned psychologist, post-Jungian theorist and founder of archetypal psychology-with specific attention to the iterative illustrations of his central theoretical construct, the soul. An analytic rather than religious term, the soul's approximate definition, meaning, use, and significance as a therapeutic concept are considered across Hillman's 45-year career. To date, no published study has examined Hillman's work with this focus. Published roughly a decade apart, four seminal Hillman texts are analyzed using an interpretative methodology termed conservative hermeneutics. It is believed that a distributed network system will provide a general means of understanding cognitive functions that occur in the brain. This study provides a framework for modeling human memory behavior using a Distributed Artificial Neural Network (DANN) architecture. This approach presents a different method for modeling cognitive functions using peer-to-peer computing. Women entering the court system face a challenging experience, in part, because a courtroom can be an intimidating and difficult place for any person, and in part because women victimized by crimes in which the offender is known to them face distinctive difficulties when they seek the court’s remedies. The interface is also made more challenging for women as the literature offers disparate findings as to the efficacy of criminal justice responses and civil remedies. Juveniles' Attitudes Toward The Police As Affected By Prior Victimization., Joshua A. Hardin

The purpose of this study was to analyze juveniles' attitudes toward the police and how their attitudes were affected by prior victimization and delinquency, controlling for race, gender, and city of residence. All variables used in this study came from the Gang Resistance Education and Training (G.R.E.A.T.) data collected by Esbensen (1999). The analysis indicated that females held more favorable attitudes toward the police than males, Whites held more favorable attitudes toward the police than non-Whites, and juveniles living in small rural/suburban areas held more favorable attitudes than those living in large urban areas.
