Many variables have been analyzed in order to understand parent-adolescent interactions and outcomes for adolescents. These variables must be integrated into a model that demonstrates the holistic interplay of parent-adolescent interaction variables so that a more comprehensive understanding of parent-adolescent interactions is achieved. Variables included in the model proposed here were parenting, family environment, expectations, conflict, and outcomes. Parenting, family environment, and conflict were associated with outcomes for adolescents. When the variables were analyzed simultaneously with structural equation modeling, however, the relationship of parenting and adolescent outcomes was mediated wholly for male-father, male-mother, and female-father relationships but remained significant for …

Research in several domains has shown that the implementation of computerized decision support aids is often associated with issues of human-automation interaction, which can have disastrous consequences. One often-cited reason for these issues is the poor quality of the feedback that is provided to the operators through these tools. The objective of the proposed investigation is to examine how providing feedback through a decision support tool affects operator knowledge and performance in the context of a fault management task for naval gunfire support. This article describes how a small liberal arts college library created a digital library using existing staff and financial resources. The Hekman Digital Archive (HDA) was created using a digital media archive module of the library’s ILS, and is maintained by one library staff member with the help of numerous student assistants.

When librarian William Stanley Hoole retired from the University of Alabama in 1973, he left a legacy of achievement worthy of consideration among librarianship's most capable pioneers. In twenty-nine years at the institution, Hoole improved the university's library service and holdings and won intellectual acclaim for the school through his numerous publications covering a wide range of topics. He addressed an organizational problem within the archival collection that resulted in the creation of a separate wing boasting his name today, the William Stanley Hoole Special Collections Library (WSHSCL). Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session

This paper presents a preliminary ethnobotanical lexicon of plant names in the Kalam Kohistani language, spoken in the mountainous north of Pakistan. The list includes 203 Kalam Kohistani plant lexemes, with their English and Urdu glosses; 137 of these are tentatively identified with their Latin scientific names. Many of the glosses include brief notes on the occurrence and local uses of the plants. The paper ends with an index of 116 English common plant names with their Kalam Kohistani equivalents, followed by an index of scientific names.

Optimality Theory (OT) is a formal linguistic model in which grammars consist of a universal set of violable constraints that are ranked in a language-particular hierarchy. Lower-ranked constraints are often forcibly violated in order to improve satisfaction of higher-ranked constraints. The optimal or most harmonic pronunciation of a given word is that output candidate which best fulfills the language-specific ranking for a selected input form.

The State of the news media survey 2004 has found that journalists in the United States believe "business pressures are making the news they produce thinner and shallower" (Kovach, Rosenstiel & Mitchell, 2004, p. 1). This study follows a recent engineering study by PSU students, which offers a potential trail alignment in the Sullivan’s Gulch. Metro Parks and Greenspaces asked for a product that would identify whether and how the trail would meet regional goals if constructed as an off‐street path. This report is intended to research and explain the planning issues that follow from the potential trail alignment. This report provides information to support a decision on whether to apply for funding for further planning and engineering study. It also serves as a practical resource for future action. "This paper presents a framework for analyzing the complex resource of scholarly communication as a commons. Previously we have argued that the dilemmas associated with managing shared information are quite similar to those associated with managing natural and human-constructed common-pool resources (CPRs), where we can observe how the development of new technologies has changed the structure and processes involved in managing these types of resources over time. We concluded that collective action and institutional design play key roles in shaping economic and social aspects of information. The purpose of the Linking Lents Project is to increase opportunities for physical activity in the Lents neighborhood. Both programming changes and physical changes to the built environment are needed to accomplish this goal. While a trailhead in the Lents neighborhood will attract some new users to the trail, a trailhead alone may not greatly increase trail use. A Lents trailhead constructed in conjunction with improved overall access to the trail, connections to neighborhood amenities and public education of the benefits of increased physical activity will increase Lents residents’ use of the trail. Models Of Inclusion In Child Care: Child Care That Works For Children With Emotional And/Or Behavioral Challenges: Family Member Perceptions, Shane Ama, Eileen M. Brennan, Sara Berman, Jennifer R. Bradley

Although 5-10% of employed parents care for a child with emotional or behavioral challenges (EBCs) (Emlen, 1997), family support resources are notably lacking. A recent focus group study of 41 working parents (Rosenzweig, Brennan, & Ogilvie, 2002) found child care to be particularly difficult to find and maintain for families that included children with EBCs. Participants reported a number of barriers to child care arrangements that could successfully meet their family's needs. First, since few qualified providers had the expertise to meet the needs of children with EBCs, arrangements were difficult to find. A combination of the lack of quality …

OBJECTIVE: To assess how physical and/or sexual intimate partner violence (IPV), child abuse, and community violence relate to long-term mental and physical problems; to examine the overlap between different forms of violence and the impact of experiencing multiple forms of violence.

DESIGN: Cross-sectional survey.

SETTING: Three general internal medicine practices affiliated with an academic medical center.

PARTICIPANTS: English-speaking women aged 25 to 60.

MEASUREMENTS: Telephone or in-person interview and chart review.

RESULTS: One hundred seventy-four women completed interviews. A majority of participants experienced more than one form of violence. In separate multivariate analyses, each form of violence was associated with …
