Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

From October 2002 to January 2004, the Center for Archaeological Research (CAR) of The University of Texas at San Antonio conducted archaeological investigations for the City of San Antonio in a 2,570.25-acre project area that is the future site of the San Antonio Toyota Motor Manufacturing Plant. The work was conducted under Texas Antiquities Permit No. 2982 with Dr. Steve A. Tomka, CAR Director, serving as Principal Investigator.

The project included the reconnaissance of over 500 acres of the project area, the excavation of 376 shovel tests, 250 mechanical auger borings, and 42 backhoe and Gradall trenches. The backhoe and …

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

This report documents the exhumation and reburial of three historic graves within the right of way of Interstate Highway 10 (IH-10) near the intersection of Eldridge Drive. Called the Eldridge or Oscar Abstein Cemetery, historic research indicated that three to four graves probably existed near station marker 581+75 within the area of improvements that the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) proposed to IH-10. TxDOT’s Archeological Studies Program, Environmental Affairs Division, prepared a planning document entitled: “Exhumation and Reinterment Plan, IH-10, CSJ: 0271-07-247, Eldridge Cemetery” and contracted with Prewitt and Associates, Inc., of Austin, Texas, to conduct the necessary investigations. Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

In December 2002 and January 2003, CAS fulfilled a contractual agreement with AGTX to conduct an intensive cultural resources inventory on 19 sites recommended for reevaluation. A total of 267 shovel tests were placed on 17 of those sites. An additional 44 shovel tests were placed around 41BP138, an historic winery operation. Finally, additional mapping and inventories were conducted at two sites: 1) 41BP148, a mining operation and residential area, and 2) 41BP146, an isolated historic burial. The completion of this project finalizes the listing of sites that required further testing, mapping, and reevaluation.

Development economists have long debated the proper targets for foreign aid contributions from wealthy countries. Philosophers like Peter Singer and Peter Unger now suggest that these countries' citizens have a parallel moral responsibility to tithe a portion of their income directly for the relief of the suffering of the poorest. These thinkers would prefer a systematic global redistribution of income - some public mechanism for accomplishing worldwide what the tax systems of egalitarian social democratic states accomplish. But they all realize that such global governance is unlikely to come about in any of our lifetimes. So they turn their attention …

The present study focuses on the use of Spanish by near-native speakers in the United States. I will consider near-native speakers to be those individuals who speak Spanish as a second language, who are capable of having a complex conversation in that language, who are able to understand any speaker, and who are able to function as professionals using Spanish in their field of work. Sources confidentiality is the one absolute in journalism. A guarantee never to divulge the name of a confidential sources is part of all codes of conduct and is the one clause that never contains a qualification, such as 'save where the public interest demands otherwise'. However, there are problems with this rule, especially when it is used by public relations practitioners or is used when it is clearly not in the public interest.

Irish journalism developed during the 19th century at a time of tremendous change. While journalists were involved in the debates about nationalism, both as commentators and in many cases activists, they also developed a journalism practice that corresponded to the professional norms of journalists in Britain and the United States. It would appear that the middle-class nature of Irish journalists meant there was a dual pressure towards professionalising journalism and fighting for legislative independence. Both factors came together in the development of a public sphere, where professional journalists were involved in creating public opinion.

ANALYSIS: When terrorists bomb packed trains, the injuries are horrific, reports Tom Clonan The bombs that ripped through three Spanish commuter trains yesterday were especially lethal when detonated in such a confined space. The type of explosives used would appear to have been high-explosive devices of a type used previously by terrorist groups such as Eta and the Provisional IRA. Indeed, Spanish police foiled an attempt to place a 25kg high-explosive device on the regional San Sebastian-Madrid train as recently as December of last year. This Anglican church is only blocks away from the First Presbyterian church in Philadelphia, where Wilson rented a pew until the end of his life. Some scholars report that Wilson joined the Anglican Communion in 1778, perhaps at the behest of one his best friends, William White, the first Anglican bishop of Philadelphia.
