The Social Contract Of Nations: Peace, Politics, And Discipline In The International Society Of States, Christoph A Borucki Feb 2004

The Social Contract Of Nations: Peace, Politics, And Discipline In The International Society Of States, Christoph A Borucki

Archived Theses and Dissertations

Adopting a genealogical approach, "The Social Contract of Nations: Peace,

Politics and Discipline in the International Society of States" attempts to reveal how the military dream of tranquilization, manifested in international law, informed the formation of the society of states. Tracing the development of modem international law back to its origins as personified by Hugo Grotius, this thesis brings to light the disciplining and tranquilizing function of international law. The regulation of interstate relations will appear not only as the pursuit of peace as inspired by the legal philosophers of the Enlightenment epoch, but as dreamt of by 'military intelligence' …

Middle East Security Predicament: Revisiting The Literature, Heba Ezz El-Din Negm Feb 2004

Middle East Security Predicament: Revisiting The Literature, Heba Ezz El-Din Negm

Archived Theses and Dissertations

Concepts of security, conflict and war lie at the heart of the international relations discipline. These concepts have gained tremendous attention either by the end of the Cold War or after the attacks of 9/11 on the United States. This thesis examines the various theories of security in the literature and demonstrates the importance of the region as a crucial level of analysis in International Relations. The primary objective of this thesis is to explore security structures in the Middle East. This region, which is known for its paramount security problems, has long been an area of conflict and turbulence. …

The Localization Of The Western Globalization Discourse In Egypt, Mohamed Waked Feb 2004

The Localization Of The Western Globalization Discourse In Egypt, Mohamed Waked

Archived Theses and Dissertations

This thesis investigates the 'localization' of globalization discourse in Egypt by following its rise in the United States to its reception by various local knowledge structures in Egypt. It argues that the main characteristics of the discourse show that it represents a new phase of an old colonial narrative, in operation at least since the introduction of modernization theories. The thesis finds little structural novelty in globalization knowledge, as the discourse structurally resembles older paradigms of modernization in ideas, assumptions, and analytical methodologies. As such, even though it is portrayed as a discovery of a new knowledge paradigm, it represents …

Measuring Prejudiced Attitudes Toward Mexicans In Latter-Day Saint Missionaries During Missionary Service In The American Southwest, Jared A. Montoya Feb 2004

Measuring Prejudiced Attitudes Toward Mexicans In Latter-Day Saint Missionaries During Missionary Service In The American Southwest, Jared A. Montoya

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate the foundations of prejudiced attitudes toward Mexicans held by White Americans and to investigate a means of reducing it, paying specific attention to prejudice found within a subpopulation of White Americans. The origins of American prejudice toward Mexicans are outlined using both historical and psychological explanations. An understanding of these origins leads to the notion that increased favorable contact is the best method for reducing prejudice. A field study focusing on prejudice toward Mexicans among ecclesiastical volunteers demonstrated that missionary service can be considered a means of favorable contact. Eighty-one White American …

Selective Sexual Harassment: Differential Treatment Of Similar Groups Of Women Workers, Elizabeth A. Hoffmann Feb 2004

Selective Sexual Harassment: Differential Treatment Of Similar Groups Of Women Workers, Elizabeth A. Hoffmann

Department of Sociology Faculty Publications

If male workers categorize different groups of women coworkers and, subsequently, treat them differently, the experiences of women from one of these groups would not be indicative of the experiences of women from another group. When this different treatment involves hostile environment sexual harassment of one group, but not the other, then the law must recognize the possibility of "selective sexual harassment." Without this understanding of the nuances of the workplace dynamics, a court could mistake the women of the unharassed group as representing "reasonable women" and the women of the harassed group as simply oversensitive. This paper draws on …
