The Role Of Perceived Control And Preference For Control In Adherence To A Chronic Medical Regimen, Jamie Cvengros, Alan Christensen, William Lawton
Alan J. Christensen
Background: Poor patient adherence is a widespread problem among patients undergoing hemodialysisfor end-stage renal disease.
Purpose: The goal of this study was to examine the joint role of perceived restriction of control and individual differences in preference for control in predicting adherence to the hemodialysis regimen.
Methods: Participants were 49 patients recruited from five hemodialysis centers affiliated with the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Preference for control in the health care context was assessed using the Preference for Information and Preference for Behavioral Involvement subscales of the Krantz Health Opinion Survey, and perceived control was assessed using six items …
Do Some Interventions Work Better Than Others? A Review Of Comparative Social Work Experiments, William Reid, Bonnie Kenaley, Julanne Colvin
Do Some Interventions Work Better Than Others? A Review Of Comparative Social Work Experiments, William Reid, Bonnie Kenaley, Julanne Colvin
Bonnie Kenaley
Knowledge of which interventions are more efficacious than others for given problems is central to evidencebased practice. Attempts to build this knowledge have been confined largely to reviews and meta-analyses of experiments comparing methods of psychotherapy. This literature has suggested that different methods tend to have equivalent results. The authors reviewed all experiments comparing 39 social work programs that were published between 1990 and 2001. Contrary to findings for psychotherapy experiments, a large majority of the social work comparisons showed differential effects. The role of common factors appeared to be diminished by departures of most the social work programs from …
Constructing The "New Ethnicities": Media, Sexuality, And Diaspora Identity In The Lives Of South Asian Immigrant Girls, Meenakshi Durham
Constructing The "New Ethnicities": Media, Sexuality, And Diaspora Identity In The Lives Of South Asian Immigrant Girls, Meenakshi Durham
Meenakshi Gigi Durham
This paper posits that adolescence, as experienced by girls of immigrant diaspora groups, is complicated by issues of race, culture and nation that intersect with discourses of sex and gender. In terms of globalization theory, sexuality is conceptualized as a locus of cultural hybridization; media representations of sexuality often mark the global/local nexus for diaspora peoples. In this study, a series of in-depth interviews were conducted with South Asian American girls in order to analyze the role of media in their sexual identity constructions. The focus group data revealed radical rearticulations of sexual identity from an "interstitial" audience position that …

Finding Meaning In Parenting A Child With Asperger Syndrome: Correlates Of Sense Making And Benefit Finding, Kenneth Pakenham, Kate Sofronoff, Christina Samios
Christina Samios
This study explored the nature of two construals of meaning, benefit finding and sense making, in parents of a child with Asperger syndrome, and examined relations between both meaning constructs and the Double ABCX family stress model variables (initial stressor and pile-up of demands, appraisal, social support, coping strategies and adjustment) [H.I. McCubbin, J.M. Patterson, Social Stress and the Family: Advances and Developments in Family Stress Theory and Research, Haworth, New York, 1983, pp. 7–37]. A total of 59 parents completed questionnaires. Content analyses of parents’ responses to questions inquiring about gains and sense making explanations revealed 8 benefit and …
A Cross-Cultural Look At Serving The Public Interest: American And Israeli Journalists Consider Ethical Scenarios, Dan Berkowitz, Yehiel Limor, Jane Singer
A Cross-Cultural Look At Serving The Public Interest: American And Israeli Journalists Consider Ethical Scenarios, Dan Berkowitz, Yehiel Limor, Jane Singer
Jane B. Singer
This study explores how the social dimensions of a reporter’s world shape ethical decisions through parallel surveys of daily newspaper reporters in Israel and one Midwestern US state. Through regression analysis, we found that personal factors (gender, years of education) were not related to ethical decisions nor were professional factors (professional experience, professional membership, having studied journalism). In contrast, the social context element (country of practice) was relevant for two of three ethical situations. We also found that personal, professional and social dimensions varied in their utility to ethical decision-making from situation to situation. Considering a reporter’s ethical predisposition, this …

From Youth Rebellion To Child Abduction: The Anatomy Of Recruitment In Sierra Leone, Emmanuel Aning, Angela Mcintyre
From Youth Rebellion To Child Abduction: The Anatomy Of Recruitment In Sierra Leone, Emmanuel Aning, Angela Mcintyre
Emmanuel Kwesi Aning
Using a case study of Sierra Leone, this chapter aims to bring attention to the importance of youth as a constituency with a substantial stake in national and regional stability in Africa. We have attempted this by first giving a background to the conflict, followed by a discussion of the nature of youth recruitment and participation in the conflict, followed by a look at some influential perspectives on the issue of child and youth participation in violence, and the influences they have had on policy making. We conclude with the idea that youth are of central concern to both national …

Predicting And Explaining Public Opinion Regarding U.S. Slavery Reparations, Michelle Campo, Teresa Mastin, M. Frazer
Michelle L. Campo
Slavery reparations have long been a discussion topic within the African American community and press. The issue has begun to appear in mainstream press and was a topic at a Fall 2001 United Nation summit on race. Little is known about how Americans feel about slavery reparations, proposed forms of compensation, and how opinions compare to reparations already awarded to others such as Japanese Americans interned during World War II. The data for this study were obtained from a Fall 2001 poll conducted by a mid-sized southern university of state residents (N = 614). Data suggest that attitudes toward slavery …
