Stepchildren’S Perceptions Of The Contradictions In Communication With Stepparents, Leslie Baxter, Dawn Braithwaite, Leah Bryant, A. Wagner Aug 2014

Stepchildren’S Perceptions Of The Contradictions In Communication With Stepparents, Leslie Baxter, Dawn Braithwaite, Leah Bryant, A. Wagner

Dawn O. Braithwaite

This interpretive study, framed in relational dialectics theory, sought to identify stepchildren’s perceptions of the contradictions that animate communication with the stepparent in their household of primary residence. In-depth interviews were conducted, producing 802 pages of double-spaced interview transcripts, which were analyzed inductively for commonly experienced contradictions of stepchild–stepparent communication. Three underlying contradictions were identified. First, stepchild–stepparent communication was perceived to be characterized by a dialectic of integration, characterized by both closeness and distance. Second, stepchild–stepparent communication was perceived to be characterized by a dialectic of parental status, in which the stepparent was, and was not, granted legitimacy in a …

Social Norms And Expectancy Violation Theories: Assessing The Effectiveness Of Health Communication Campaigns, Michelle Campo, Kenzie Cameron, Dominique Brossard Nov 2004

Social Norms And Expectancy Violation Theories: Assessing The Effectiveness Of Health Communication Campaigns, Michelle Campo, Kenzie Cameron, Dominique Brossard

Michelle L. Campo

College students' processing of alcohol, smoking, and exercise social norms messages, and related effects on judgments, attitudes toward one's own behaviors, and attitudes toward undergraduates' behaviors were examined using social norms marketing and Expectancy Violation Theory (EVT) (N=393). Receiving statistical social norms messages led to an expectancy violation of the perceived social norm (i.e., a discrepancy between the expected and actual statistic conveyed with a message). Consistent with Boster et al. (2000 ), the effect of the message discrepancy on attitudes was mediated by judgments. In accordance with social norms, when participants were provided with a statistic, the majority moved …

Drinking, Alcohol Policy, And Attitudes Toward A Campus Riot, Michelle Campo, Stan Kaplowitz Aug 2004

Drinking, Alcohol Policy, And Attitudes Toward A Campus Riot, Michelle Campo, Stan Kaplowitz

Michelle L. Campo

Results from a survey of college students (N = 2,008) indicate that most disapproved of a major riot that had occurred on their campus but most also felt that the university was excessively restricting alcohol, and almost half of them enjoyed the riot. The major predictor of condoning the riot was objecting to restrictions against alcohol. However, objection to restrictions and enjoying the riot were primarily predicted by frequency of alcohol consumption. Males, Whites, and younger students were more likely to enjoy the riot than others.

The Mismeasure Of Masculinity: The Male Body, ‘Race’ And Power In The Enumerative Discourses Of The Nfl Draft, Thomas Oates, Meenakshi Durham Aug 2004

The Mismeasure Of Masculinity: The Male Body, ‘Race’ And Power In The Enumerative Discourses Of The Nfl Draft, Thomas Oates, Meenakshi Durham

Meenakshi Gigi Durham

The athletic male body has long been idealized in western culture, and its dimensions are a key aspect of its iconic status. Oates and Durham examine the discourses of the athletic male body as it is presented in media discourses surrounding the NFL Draft. They focus specifically on the enumerative strategies used to define and delimit the racialized bodies of football draftees. Through a close textual analysis of publications that deal with the Draft, they uncover three main themes in the discursive construction of the athletes' bodies: the delineation of the body in terms of its dimensions; the assessment of …

Constructing The "New Ethnicities": Media, Sexuality, And Diaspora Identity In The Lives Of South Asian Immigrant Girls, Meenakshi Durham May 2004

Constructing The "New Ethnicities": Media, Sexuality, And Diaspora Identity In The Lives Of South Asian Immigrant Girls, Meenakshi Durham

Meenakshi Gigi Durham

This paper posits that adolescence, as experienced by girls of immigrant diaspora groups, is complicated by issues of race, culture and nation that intersect with discourses of sex and gender. In terms of globalization theory, sexuality is conceptualized as a locus of cultural hybridization; media representations of sexuality often mark the global/local nexus for diaspora peoples. In this study, a series of in-depth interviews were conducted with South Asian American girls in order to analyze the role of media in their sexual identity constructions. The focus group data revealed radical rearticulations of sexual identity from an "interstitial" audience position that …

A Cross-Cultural Look At Serving The Public Interest: American And Israeli Journalists Consider Ethical Scenarios, Dan Berkowitz, Yehiel Limor, Jane Singer Apr 2004

A Cross-Cultural Look At Serving The Public Interest: American And Israeli Journalists Consider Ethical Scenarios, Dan Berkowitz, Yehiel Limor, Jane Singer

Jane B. Singer

This study explores how the social dimensions of a reporter’s world shape ethical decisions through parallel surveys of daily newspaper reporters in Israel and one Midwestern US state. Through regression analysis, we found that personal factors (gender, years of education) were not related to ethical decisions nor were professional factors (professional experience, professional membership, having studied journalism). In contrast, the social context element (country of practice) was relevant for two of three ethical situations. We also found that personal, professional and social dimensions varied in their utility to ethical decision-making from situation to situation. Considering a reporter’s ethical predisposition, this …

Predicting And Explaining Public Opinion Regarding U.S. Slavery Reparations, Michelle Campo, Teresa Mastin, M. Frazer Mar 2004

Predicting And Explaining Public Opinion Regarding U.S. Slavery Reparations, Michelle Campo, Teresa Mastin, M. Frazer

Michelle L. Campo

Slavery reparations have long been a discussion topic within the African American community and press. The issue has begun to appear in mainstream press and was a topic at a Fall 2001 United Nation summit on race. Little is known about how Americans feel about slavery reparations, proposed forms of compensation, and how opinions compare to reparations already awarded to others such as Japanese Americans interned during World War II. The data for this study were obtained from a Fall 2001 poll conducted by a mid-sized southern university of state residents (N = 614). Data suggest that attitudes toward slavery …

Strange Bedfellows? The Diffusion Of Convergence In Four News Organizations, Jane Singer Jan 2004

Strange Bedfellows? The Diffusion Of Convergence In Four News Organizations, Jane Singer

Jane B. Singer

This study examines newsroom convergence—a combination of technologies, products, staffs and geography among the previously distinct provinces of print, television and online media—through the framework of diffusion of innovations theory. Convergence is becoming a global trend as media companies continue to expand their holdings beyond their original core products. Using a combination of qualitative and quantitative data drawn from case studies of four US newsrooms, it is suggested that, despite culture clashes and other issues of compatibility, journalists see clear advantages in the new policy of convergence. Journalists perceive experience in a converged newsroom as a career booster, say they …

The Effects Of Loneliness On Relational Maintenance Behaviors: An Attributional Perspective, Donna Henson, Kristin Dybvig-Pawelko, Daneil Canary Dec 2003

The Effects Of Loneliness On Relational Maintenance Behaviors: An Attributional Perspective, Donna Henson, Kristin Dybvig-Pawelko, Daneil Canary

Donna Henson

This study links the experience of loneliness to the use of relational maintenance behaviors. More precisely, an attributional perspective on loneliness is adopted, wherein chronic loneliness leads to attributions for the cause of loneliness to stable, internal, and uncontrollable factors; situational loneliness is more likely to be attributed to unstable, external, and controllable factors. Over 400 participants completed measures of chronic and situational loneliness, and relational maintenance strategies. Residts indicated that both forms of loneliness are negatively associated with maintenance strategies. As anticipated, chronically lonely people reported the least use of relational maintenance behaviors across relationship types.

More Than Ink-Stained Wretches: The Resocialization Of Print Journalists In Converged Newsrooms, Jane Singer Dec 2003

More Than Ink-Stained Wretches: The Resocialization Of Print Journalists In Converged Newsrooms, Jane Singer

Jane B. Singer

Newsroom experiments with convergence-a sharing of news staffs, technologies, products, and geography-disrupt not just the norms and routines of newspaper news work but, more profoundly, the professional socialization of print journalists and their perception of themselves as a distinctive kind of news worker. This article draws on case studies of four converged newsrooms to examine conceptual and sociological shifts among newspaper journalists. Findings suggest print journalists are undergoing resocialization to an expanded view of profrssionalism; ingrained habits and learned skills related to newsroom structure and storytelling norms are more resistant to change

To Broadband Or Not To Broadband: The Relationship Between High-Speed Internet And Knowledge And Participation, Ann Williams Dec 2003

To Broadband Or Not To Broadband: The Relationship Between High-Speed Internet And Knowledge And Participation, Ann Williams

Ann E Williams

This study tests 2 competing theoretical models that attempt to understand the roles that broadband Internet plays in society. The linear model posits that the gains or harms introduced by the Internet via narrowband will further increase with the adoption of broadband. On the contrary, the differential gains model proposes that changes stemming from advances to different stages of Internet connection technology should be unique to each technological advance. Findings show that support for these models was contingent upon the domain that each criterion variable represents. For hard engagement, such as political discussion, hard knowledge, and civic participation, there was …
