The Anchor: 2002

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

This symposium has been made possible through the support of the University of Nebraska’s Hendricks Fund. Established through the generosity of Mr. G. E. Hendricks, this fund is dedicated to supporting the exploration of “current controversial political questions… in a nonpartisan, unbiased manner.” Mr. Hendricks, an alumnus of the University and later an attorney in Colorado, believed that a more intelligent examination and consideration of political questions would lead to better government.

The 95-page report, The U.S. Food Marketing System, 2002: Competition, Coordination and Technological Innovations into the 21st Century (Agricultural Economic Report No. 811), can be downloaded from the ERS website at www.ers.usda.gov. Web Services are increasingly being adapted by Enterprises as the new approach to component-based solutions for enterprise applications. They hold potential to transform Web from a collection of information resources to a distributed computing platform. Many enterprise applications, including those supporting e-commerce take a form of processes, which need to be created from individual Web Services and other software components.

Friendship Quality In Youth Disability Sport: Perceptions Of A Best Friend, Jeffrey J. Martin, Kerry Smith

Kinesiology, Health and Sport Studies

The purpose of the current investigation was to examine friendship quality with a best friend in youth disability sport with an international sample of moderately experienced athletes with disabilities ages 9 to 18 years. Participants were 85 males and 65 females from four countries who competed in track and field and swimming. Data were collected with the Sport Friendship Quality Scale (Weiss & Smith, 1999). An exploratory factor analyses indicated that participants viewed their friendship quality with a best friend in disability sport as having both positive and negative dimensions. As a method specifically intended for the study of messages, content analysis is fundamental to mass communication research. Intercoder reliability, more specifically termed intercoder agreement, is a measure of the extent to which independent judges make the same coding decisions in evaluating the characteristics of messages, and is at the heart of this method. Yet there are few standard and accessible guidelines available regarding the appropriate procedures to use to assess and report intercoder reliability, or software tools to calculate it. Agriculture historically has been one of the primary sectors of the Arkansas economy. Agriculture is defined as the sum of agricultural, forestry, and fisheries production and processing activities unless otherwise specified. Not only does agriculture contribute to the economy through direct agricultural production and added value processing, it also plays an important role through the economy’s other sectors. Utilizing data from the United States Bureau of Economic Affairs and the State of Arkansas, the economic impact of agriculture on the Arkansas economy was estimated for the latest year available, 1999. Community Benchmarks Program

This study reports information about the recent technology audit of 30 of the 35 municipalities in Onondaga County. Data collection time was designated from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15, 2002. Several extensions were made with the final data accepted on Oct. 23, 2002. Researchers used an instrument designed to gather information about number of computers accessible to staff, type of hardware and software used, funding allocated for computer training, number of printers available, access to the Internet, employee satisfaction with current technology and future technology needs.
